Random Thoughts Thread

Saw this video and thought it was a pretty good summary of our situation. Watch up to the 2:30 minute mark and replace the words Marvin Lewis with Mooney, the Bengals with Richmond basketball, and playoff game with A10 Championship/NCAA tournament appearance (though Mooney has been to the tournament twice).

By the way, Marvin Lewis has been fired....

I wanted to bump this post. The Spiders under Mooney have long been the Bengals under Marvin Lewis. You only have to listen to Stephen A until 2:30...

Narrator Update: Nothing good happened to the Bengals after they fired their perpetually mediocre coach

Great bump Chop and like to add this stat tidbit .....

For the 8 games of conference play so far the Spiders 3PT shooting comes in at 27% (14th) and defensively it stands at 39% (14th) Won't go into individually the players shooting %. Use your imagination but looks like a team effort. Maybe the vets are wearing down after a longer than expected career?

Thanks Chop. What year was this posted? Always like your posts and I liked @spiderstudent17 posts also. I guess we haven’t heard from him lately either. I suppose he has moved onto other things since nothing has changed on the coaching front. Of course things were really dire back in 2019 when I probably first started to post.

Aren't we supposed to be a program with a system built on hitting three pointers?

It was posted in January of 2019. Marvin Lewis was indeed fired.

After a rough start, I'm guessing Bengals fans are pretty happy with the change.

Yes. Moon recruits 1-5 to be shooters not defenders nor rebounders. The flaw is that when we don’t shoot well there is no fall back option to rely upon.
We also don't recruit interior rim protectors so when the other team's outside shots aren't falling they can pound the ball inside or grab offensive rebounds and get high percentage opportunities. How many dunks and 2 foot shots did VCU get the other night? Williams was determined to get the ball into the lane and not let his team lose. I would have liked to see Burton try to take over in the same fashion when his outside shots weren't falling...he's that good of a player.

The trouble is when he did try to drive he either lost the ball or missed close in shots.

So true. That and other of the basics & fundamentals. Imagine a coach that would include those in his system resulting in a tremendous upside as opposed to limitations by exclusion.

Long-time huge Spider fan, first-time Basketball Board poster. A few random observations:

What a shame that Dji is injured. I’m convinced he would have made a huge impact especially with Isaiah struggling and Crabtree out ill. Any idea when he will be back? His future as a Spider is bright.

So great to see Goose contributing, not just on defense as expected, but with some nice spurts on offense. He needs to learn though that those swooping drives to the hoop are just too easy to swat away in the A10.

Unfortunate to see that Sal did not develop as some expected. Perhaps if he had different/better player development coaching (and put on a few more pounds)?

I’ve never been a big fan of Grace, but I have to admit that he has outperformed my expectations.

Friday’s game with the Bonnies is huge. A win is our last chance to possibly make the rest of regular season interesting (dare I say go for a top 4 spot?) as well as show we can win a big game at home (weird to say that since winning at home shouldn’t be harder than on the road).

I was glad when they added Maurice J as Assistant Coach. Not sure what his role has been but hopefully contributing a lot behind the scenes.

Nothing new to add about Mooney beyond what you have all said on the posts, just that I hope the next coach comes soon and actually believes in defense and rebounding.

Go Spiders!!!!

Grace was criticized too much on this board. he's become a real positive and does a lot of good things. his best ball will be next year. I'm just not overly confident it'll be here ... but I hope so.

announcers made it sound like Goose was the last guy we'd want shooting that late 3 against VCU, but his shot definitely looks improved and he's had recent success from outside.

well, he's a 29% career 3 point shooter who's now hit 42% this season.
very small sample size, but encouraging to me at least.
I'm guessing he's looked great in practice :)

Grace was rightly criticized on this board. He was a passive player his first two years with a low ceiling But I will agree, he has worked hard and is now a serviceable bench player who makes positive contributions. Credit to Grace for working hard, providing his doubters wrong and improving his game.

That said, his ceiling was never to be a starter on a team that will be able to "compete" for an A-10 championship. If he stays next year, he will be a starter on what will be a mid-pack to lower tier level A-10 squad.

His overall sample size is small.
I agree, his shot seems better but...

6 of 37 2019-2020
7 of 24 2020-2021

This season four games 0 for 1, one 0 for 2, but...
2 for 2 UMass, 3 for 4 Duquesne

Just seems kind of a small sample to be sure what you will get.

and those two games are, of course, what we will focus on. The future is always bright.

I choose to focus on this entire season's 42% (5/12).
yes, you can choose to only see the 7 misses.
The uncertainty of the binomial distribution is sqrt(npq), which in this situation means, given no other information, we would expect Goose's "real" 3pt shooting percentage to be between 28% and 56% given his performance so far this season. He is on the border of shooting better by a statistically significant amount compared to previous seasons, but not quite there yet.

Or another way of looking at it. Someone who shoots 29% on average has a 25% change of making 5 or more 3 pointers in 12 attempts.

I've acknowledged that it's a very small sample size. what more do you want? 5/12 doesn't mean he's now a strong 3 point shooter. it also doesn't mean he can't be.

Goose shot decently his freshman year when he actually had most volume 16/47 for 34%.

I wish he would take more, not sure has the green light from Mooney which doesn't help the confidence. But I've watched him he's got a good stroke. I think he would do much better than how the rest of team is shooting them this year if he took with more regularity. While right now he's more important for D, imo he should be a more focal point of O.

Listening to Bob Black's show today, he led off with what a botched job the Redskins did releasing their new politically correct name. He talked about how the super bowl years on the patch were the year the super bowl game was played, not the season the super bowl championship represented. Also how it is important for them to win to build the brand of the new nickname.

How ironic. This guy works for the UR athletic department. Everything they do is botched. Spelling errors galore on just about everything they release. Bob saying the department will find new fans. And what does Bob think about the Spider brand with Mooney's winning percentage being so mediocre overall and so bad against our main rival. I would say Bob, just like the leadership at the school, is tone deaf. I don't think they grasp how ridiculous they look to anyone paying attention.

His show is so painfully "cringe-y" that i just can't listen any more. Does anyone call in?

They are from Philly.

Grace is still not very good, however he is much better than Sal. See, I know how to compliment.

Amazing how Bob can ridicule other teams so easily on his show but when it comes to talking about UR basketball, he's got the biggest set of blinders on.

The dude's a UR employee...what do you expect?
I know that. But damn, ask some hard questions from time to time. He gets probably the most media access to Mooney and lobs him softball after softball. For instance, the entire postgame interview after VCU loss was filled with questions about how good we played in the second half.

He is all happy and content all of the time. Most announcers would be pretty gutted after a loss to your rival and you would hear that in their voice. Much like the Borg, Bob Black has been assimilated. He feels no pain or humiliation anymore.

his job isn't to grill Mooney or make anyone at UR look bad. he does his job very well.
