Practice

Yeah and all those message board posters "upgraded" their giving to sit court side! Way to go!

The youngsters looked like youngsters, but no lack of talent. The veterans are showing them what A10 play is going to feel like. It's early but the intensity is high and I'm thinking the competition for playing time is going to be fierce.

Hopefully Mooney stays open minded and plays the best he has this year.

This reminds me. I don't but much faith at all in roster height & weight, but...

Did I see that Pistokache had gained 25 pounds? Any evidence that is anywhere near accurate?

Jesse is pomped op! Look at the recent videos, he appears really strong. The Spiders are getting ready. OSC

Are any of the practices open before they go to Euroioe. I know practices starts at 4:30 pm.

Here is a brief glimpse of what I saw today. Purely superficial observations...

1 - DeMonte looks good to me - aggressive, pretty quick, doesn't seem to make many mistakes. Looked a little tired half way through - but it's July. Nice shooting touch and seems to get off the floor quickly. Courageous in traffic. Nice handle.

2 - Sherod has a sweet stroke and has, IMHO, some nice footwork and hands on shots around the basket. Was tired also - but it's early. Doesn't look real quick - but it's all drills now. No five-on-five or anything happened today. Great potential, and listens well to the coaches.

3 - Golden looks like he brings a complete game coming from the high school level. Runs the floor well, is in good shape, passes well, and shoots well until near the end of practice. Personally, he looks to me like a sophomore, not a freshman, big man. Pretty intense and smooth for his first July at UR.

4 - It's too early - but the team didn't shoot well. That being said, practice was pretty quick; and the players seemed to respond well to the coaches. We are just going to have to understand how young this team is and be patient with them while they grow. Of course, TJ won't be in practice until tomorrow (which I understand will be at 1:00).

5 - Abakah has a nice body. Will provide some minutes of defense and rebounding to spell TJ/Marshall/whoever. Not really good hands - but again it was only drills.

6 - Mooney was practicing some man-to-man defense today, according to another Spider.

Will try to keep you guys updated on progress before the overseas trip.

Stork, thank you very much for your observations. Keep them coming. OSC

Good stuff Stork! Love to hear how Golden is looking. I thought he looked strong, athletic and good shooter in the highlight videos I have seen.

Lots of beer and pizza. I was in on the Domino's order every night I think.

.

How about the bench people last year like PF, JJ and Jesse?

Years ago after the brothers spilt the company, sued each other, one moved to southside one near Short pump and both failed, ugggh. The Padow's in Innsbrook is making the original celebrity room pizza if you're looking for a nostalgic pizza experience.

We would each eat an entire pizza at Julian's on Broad Street and this predated the individual size pizza. OSC
I gained my 25 lbs. at Villa Pizza on Forest Hill Ave. They used more cheese than tomato sauce on their pizza. It was good!

We actually alternated between Julian's and Shoney's. At Shoney's we would have two Big Boy double decker burgers with onion rings. Then the three of us each polished off a bottle of ketchup. Man that was good! OSC

I saw them practice about 30 minutes yesterday. Agree with a lot of the above. TJ was there and passing well. Looked to be the leader. SDJ had done something to one of his hands and was holding it a lot and grimacing. Still playing though. They were using the international ball with the slick stripes on it. The NBA guys were having trouble shooting that ball too. All the new guys were paying attention and doing what coach said to do. Pretty amazing seeing bigger guards.

This is typical SDJ. He looks like he is hurt at least once every game (ankle/hand) whatever. He is kind of like Ced in that regards. Ced would take a fall, everyone would be like, oh god, he is really hurt, and then he would walk if off and continue to play. SDJ is a gamer (as was Ced).

I recall a few years back making a comment on this board that if Ced didn't stop throwing his body around with reckless abandon, he was going to cut his career short. I don't see SDJ doing that, but SDJ is not the most robust guy on the team, and he seems to pick up more than his fair share of knocks.

Then a nice pleasant walk to the Lee Art.

I had a chance to take in about 15 minutes of tonight's practice. A couple quick observations...

1- Grant Golden is exactly the type of big man that we need to be recruiting. He looks really impressive.
2- Kwesi is big. I'm not sure how skilled he is, but he is damn big.
3- Sherod - also big. Much bigger looking than i expected.
4- No Paul yet.
5- Energy looks really good overall. The caliber of these freshmen may lift everyone else.

Mo, thanks for the report. Stated earlier that when I drove out to see Grant play in Hagerstown, he was very impressive. Very athletic, in control, a leader. Moreover, a nice young man who was extremely polite when I talked with him prior to the game. Both Grant and his brother Bryce are outstanding players, but also just good people. OSC

What

No Paul! Is he still injured or what?

I know Paul's break was a bad one. He didn't appear to be wearing a cast but he was not participating.

As it relates to the 2016-17 season, i'd move Golden ahead of Paul on the depth chart. We've got Cline, Wood, Kwesi and Grant for the 4/5 slots. Not bad. Anything from Paul would be icing on the cake.

Really glad to hear all these positive reports about Grant. We seem to have a very special class coming in.

Mo how was JP and JJ looking, more comfortable, I hope.

whampas, are you a local? the RAC and Celebrity Room bring back fond memories. also we used to order from the PIZZA OVEN over near the crestview apts and they delivered in their oven on the back motor scooter, at least until the mayo bros found out about it and had him stopped at the entrance to campus, those clowns.

Originally from Amherst, just outside of Lynchburg. Reside in Chesterfield after a couple of stints in D.C. area. 73 Grad of SBA. I absolutely bleed red and blue. My wife (UVA) and I follow the Spiders all over the country. Plan on seeing all the football games this season. You could float the Titanic on all the pizza I ate at/from the Celebrity Room. Those were the days.

Be nice to get a report from anyone attending practice today. Guess our Spiders leave Monday for Europe. Thank you. OSC

Football practice was moved to this evening because power is off on campus. Suspect this also affected basketball.
