OT: Woj bomb!

23, I was thinking who the closest spider who can fill this role and I thought of Kenny Atkinson as well. With the right coach, Davidson can be elite with the Steph Curry connection and money.

It will be interesting if we make a GM hire since everyone seems to be doing it.

I’m going with that as our big misdirection announcement by Hardt end of season in his radio spot with Philly Bob.

We’ll probably hire Moon’s agent the guy from Gazelle Group who does most of our MTEs.

Bonus maybe re-upping Lunardi as our scheduling guru.

We need to rename the school Kenny Atkinson University to stay ahead of this. Kenny will be president, GM, AD and Coach with a bazillion NIL funds, and we will sneak in a new player with eligibility: Spida Mitchell.
Don’t go overboard on the NIL…
We will only have an annual Nil payout equal to the Cavs Salary Cap…

If there's a positive from this for our perspective, is it can further fuel our administration to act. Like I posted in the 21-loss thread yesterday, our University does care about athletics and has shown it in a variety of ways. I will say, that UR tends to not be the trailblazer when it comes to pushing athletics further, but we do care.

Hopefully this announcement from Davidson motivates us to implement something similar. Davidson is as peer of an institution as it gets. No excuses for being a small, elite, liberal arts college. It can be done as shown by Davidson. Now, we don't have an alumnus who has the cachet like Curry, but we can find someone. Not sure if assistant GM is more of a figure head role, which in that case we can ask Kenny Atkinson now, but if it requires a decent amount of work, then may have to wait until after he retires from head coaching, which could be awhile. In terms of funds, I don't know if we or quite frankly 99% of mid majors or 90%+ P5 schools can match an 8 figure NIL for basketball, but we can work towards the goals of 4-5 million.

Let’s get Spider alums as assistant GMs in all these roles:

Basketball - Kenny Atkinson. Former player and current NBA head coach for the Cavaliers. Other option could be Kevin Eastman (former assistant coach for Celtics).

Football - Tim Hightower. Former player. Retired NFL player. Other options include Shawn Barber (retired NFL player), Bruce Allen (former Washington football team president). Joe Douglas (former Jets GM).

Baseball - Sean Casey. Former player and retired MLB player. Other options include Brian Jordan (former MLB player)

Golf - Tim Finchem. Former PGA commissioner.

Walz could be. 6'11, big body. I could see a lot of P5's be interested in him. He would probably be more of a bench player at a P5, versus starter minutes he will get with us.
true. Walz would have opportunities if he entered. might even get an NIL raise. but no big role opportunities at a level above us.

I was watching a game yesterday ... either Winthrop vs High point or North Alabama vs Lipscomb (somebody was in purple!).
they were talking about the guys they wouldn't be able to retain. played too well so would move up for a better team and a better NIL.
and it hit me that we don't have anything to worry about. that's not the sign of a program on a good trajectory.

Walz is a very solid player with a lot of size and a great passer, but I think his lack of post moves is what would hold him back from a spot in P5 rotations.

Walz is not GG or TJ. If another team play their center off of the block versus up top where we play them, that would suit Walz's game much better.

he's shooting 48% from 3.
our offense (see GG and TJC) doesn't stop a 5 from scoring inside. that's where they both did most of their damage.
I'd love it if either GG or TJC has a week off this summer to work with Walz. their inside footwork was phenomenal. Walz could use their help with that.

In similar news to Woj - Davidson just announced the have hired Steph Curry as their Assistant GM for Davidson basketball (including women) and also with a small group of others, have started an 8 figure fund (likely to pay players) for both the men and women's programs. That is a lot of money to start with and get them off the ground running.

I don't see Walz going anywhere. 3 years in without a redshirt, he's very smart and I expect wants to get UR degree. Plus knows he'll play a lot and in line for ok NIL from us.

btw...High Point is legit. Unfortunately the Spidernation search committee is not fully activated but we never sleep. High Point coach is VERY high on GK list.

I am going to nominate you as the chair of the search committee GK. Huss probably next in line for VCU.

Thank you it's an honor. It's crossed my mind re: vcu. Look I'll take Odom moving on for sure, that's a mini win for us. Odom leaving could even result in Moon win % vs. VCU going from 25% to 26%. But it would also be aggravating to see VCU take another coach that would be right in our wheelhouse and very attainable, as was Odom. ugh.

Yes, HPU coach is killing it so far. And I hear they have a nice campus too - which we know in the hoops world is a detriment to success - so he has overcome that to have a two year .800 winning rate.
Read a quote that said that while Huss is good, he's starting with pocket aces when recruiting against schools in that conference.
Huss likely moves on. But HPU should be a target for a better conference soon. Maybe even the A10.

Huss might be really good. He assisted at strong programs. I'm just saying that whoever replaces Huss will probably do well too. They have better facilities and a lot more money than other teams in the conference. That's a winning combination.

Doing some HPU basketball research ...
Looks like Tubby had stopped trying even before HPU. Memphis fired him after only 2 seasons while owing him $10M. Team wasn't winning and donations were way down. He took the HPU job because he played there. They even named the gym after him. He brought son GG with him and handed him the job. GG previously won 36% of his games as head coach of Loyola. That failed like most nepo-hires.

HPU's new arena was built in 2021. They played in a crappy one before that with no student support. This year's team coincides with the classes recruited after it was built. Build it and they will come.

I don’t disagree sman. HP has poured lot of $ into facilities. Just saying he didn’t inherit a good team & has crushed it his 2 years there. Exceeded expectations regardless. Plus I also like his high level playing & coaching experience (Creighton) and even working up from the hs ranks. Including Culver Military Academy…tho maybe that’s because I’ve known a handful of guys who have gone there.

Will be interesting if he goes anywhere this cycle. Hope not so I can keep him in Richmond mix.
