Opening Night Lineup - Just for fun

think BB said during the game that "the plan" is for the freshmen to redshirt, but that can change depending on need. or did I hear that wrong?

Tanner is showing you can go from essentially redshirting to day-one starter the next season. Not sure if that impacts the current freshmen’s redshirt decision or not.

Yeah fair to think it did because so recent and right here at UR.

Overall tho it's probably an anomaly both here and other places to do that. It's 1 reason I was a little skeptical Tanner would win that starting spot.

redshirting also allows Robinson/McGlothin 2 years between them and Tanner, with no one in the class above them at their position.

McGlothin yes but not sure I really see Robinson and Tanner competing for minutes or position. I hate to use 3 vs. 4 in positionless basketball! Granted none of us has seen them play in live comp so hard to say.

I possibly have some history of overvaluing incoming players :D, but I still think both of these freshmen will be really good.
I think we're loaded at forward next year with them plus AP and Tanner. plus whichever of our 6'10" guys plays some at big forward.

the key will be if we properly replace the guard production of Hunt and White. Tyne and GW3 are a good start, but the 3 incoming freshmen next year are huge. if they're good early, our roster is built to be strong for a few years.

And, always a good chance at getting a real good guard in the portal. We have a lot of evidence of transfer guards doing great for us and should continue to be an attractive transfer spot.

Yes, we will need a good guard from the portal next year. You don't have a roster full of experienced players and let a true freshman PG run the show.

I see the redshirts as a win for both sides. If the players are good with taking a year to develop their game at the college level then it is up to the coach to develop and keep them for future contributions. The player also gets to focus on the first year of college itself which has its own challenges especially depending on one’s high school education experience. Plus, as Section 9 pointed out, you get an extra year of NIL payments so to me you are gaining more than you are losing.

Playing a few garbage time minutes can’t be something that increases a player’s amount of buy-in or future success. It is the practice time you put in and whether you mesh with the coaching philosophy that is going to make you successful. A mid-major like UR is rarely going to land an impact freshman.

this is why I included them both - I have never seen them play so have no idea how one or the other or both might play.

Probably not the thread for this but how did Nescovic end up at Dartmouth? He looked really good last night and it's not like Dartmouth is any sort of regular winner in the Ivy.

Now we’re getting personal :) since Hanover NH is damn nice - in the spring of '92, Section 9 from SW GA was all set on going to an Ivy League school—specifically to be a mean Dartmouth Green —ready to pay the then-insane tuition of $18K (which, for perspective, was half of what we paid last year for my daughter's senior year at St. Catherine’s). Thankfully, with some wise guidance from my now 85-year-old mother (who was at the game last night), I changed my mind and took a scholarship to Richmond, where my grandfather also went in the mid-1920s. No regrets—it’s been the right choice, especially as I now sit on my patio in one of Richmond’s oldest neighborhoods, just an 8-minute drive from the RC.

Why not? Obv the elite known ones w all the recruiting stars r going high major but it’s all relative. I’d think every level - high mid or low major - has about the same chances to land. At highest level u may just know going in during recruiting who it will be while other levels not as certain. Idk what your definition of impact is either. To me u can be that 3rd - 6th guy. And we don’t seem to get with same frequency as other programs. Yeah in a major rebuild year we’ve seen a couple but it’s not like we are really good year after year we often underperform so there should be opportunity here.

Just my own observation. We know Mooney goes through these recruiting ruts. & the last few years was there 4 the taking to get guys out of hs too bc the big boys were paying less attention & in some cases using less ships due to transfer portal.

Btw I think my fav impact frosh was Charles Stephens. Oh what could have been. I think his boy Marques Cunningham was unhappy & got in his head.

Interestingly enough saw Dusan play once his final year in prep. Did not know who he was but was surprised to find out did not have any p6 offers. Probably not quite quick or bouncy enough, but was very polished even at that time.

Since we went ahead and ditched any notion of an at large I would like to see lineup of:
Hunt, GW3, McGlothin, JRob, Walz. Maybe Soulis as starter when has his sea legs. B.Artis AND Tyne scrap for guard minutes. Glou heavy in there. Beagle and Walz split based on performance. Soulis and Jrob same at 4.

Another reality is that Brandon Jennings, St Chris grad, is thriving it would seem at VCU especially defensively. While not starting, playing 20+ min a game partly because Zeb Jackson is injured but clearly a good recruit by them. I could easily see Brandon staying around VCU through graduation given his mother has multiple degrees from VCU etc.

our guy would have coached that defensive tenacity right out of him

Ok now want to see Hunt, White, either Nesko or Glou, Robinson and Soulis.
GW3 and McGlothin getting a chance. Walz and Beagle earn minutes. May as well try to build for a10 tourney.
Not only build, but this could actually be a better lineup for us by game 1 of A-10 play. I don't think starting Tyne and Tanner with Hunt will ever work. I hope I am wrong, but Tanner looks a lot like Noyes did, and I will leave it at that. Tyne was 1-5 from 3 and at some point we might have to say he is just not a good 3 point guy, and at his size, he really needs to be, especially starting with Hunt.

btw is Odom a systems coach?

He had like 4 guys at VCU when he started.

Moon and/or his assistants need to be better. Especially better at recruiting ready-now freshmen and better at developing them from the get-go. There seems to be this recurring pattern of primarily looking at under the radar HS prospects. But it's a cyclic thing - if you don't get HS recruits who are ready to play, so they don't play right away, what ready-now HS recruit would consider going to UR without a track record of HS recruits getting freshman year playing time?

Who is the last true freshman starter at UR? Not spot starter bc of injury to the actual starter like Tyne last year. Not redshirt starter like Nelson who sat out bc he would have been a spot minutes backup his freshman year.

I'm glad the guards coming in seem to have some size at least. That's been an over-reliance as well in recruiting HS and portal - the guard 6' or under.

Tyler would have started as a freshman had we not had 5 returning junior starters...and Nelson maybe starts in 2022 if Jacob does not come back for his covid year, but that's about it since Jacob's freshman year.

They bring in a new coach and brand new team and don't miss a beat, our dictator has had 20 years to build whatever his vision is but we need more time to get things figured out!

Right different mindset. Odom built a brand new team, I think left with 4 guys there. He had a similar year to us & they definitely played better down the stretch. in year 1. & now looking to just murder it in year 2. Expectation at vcu regardless. None of this we need 3-4 years build. None of our competition in this era is operating that way anyway, it's a 1-2 year cycle at most. And Odom is no mercenary coach like Willy Wade, he does it the right way. Would have fit at U of R. Plus he has an offensive system too! But maybe it just doesn't take long to be good at it. and who cares if it's recruiting or the system, u r responsible for both.

Meanwhile at U of R with a 20 year dean of A10 coaches even though that should seemingly be a big advantage, we actually have much lower expectations, different mindset, it requires so much time, etc, blah blah. Not to pick on spiderstudent17 but we've had this debate, he doesn't think having a 20 year coach like Mooney leads to higher expectations at all. it doesn't make sense to me. I don't blame him, sadly that is embedded culturally here.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but when did I say that? I remember having this conversation a few months ago (my mind is a little hazy on exactly what was said) but I remember making a comment that my expectations for Mooney have and always been NCAA appearances whether that is year 1 or year 20. I gave more leeway the beginning years as he implemented his system and also recognized that years we didn’t make NCAAs weren’t automatically a failure.

But to turn it back to now, obviously this is not a good start for us at all. It’s very disappointing because losing these two games have knocked the wind out of our sails for at least the hope of an at-large. But we’re 3 games into the season and there is a lot left to play. I still believe we have the talent on this roster to surprise people and be a top half conference team. However, a lot of work is needed to get there.

idk think around same time u took offense to my Fax joke & the Bucknell 5-1 deal!

thought u said something about not having any increased expectations for Mooney. which sorta aligns with above. do u not think we can expect more out of long term coach in 1 spot...shouldn't there be a benefit such as more regular Ncaa? If not or if there's barely any it's really just another reason for churn. get the new fresh guy in regularly. I figured Mooney at year 20 is a better, more experienced coach, better recruiting, more connections for scheduling, all leading to better performance. Because I agree coaches have proven to do well year 1. I personally don't think U of R expects to reap those things. They pay him to be a nice face to school, status quo, not get in trouble and win just enough to not create extra work. and for that u will be the highest paid employee at the school.

Yet they will tell us we're 1 of the top basketball programs in the nation! It's like that saying...don't piss on someone's leg and tell them it's raining.

See, top half is not great in our conference. It's OK. But then again Hardt and PQ and crew have a lot lower expectations for their good buddy and his team.

That stuck out to me too, so in our coach's 20th year we can maybe hope to surprise some people and finish top half in a 15 team middling conference like it's some big achievement, WOWEE guys bring out the koolaid pitchers I'm thirsty

I did not take offense to that at all, I found it quite funny lol
do u not think we can expect more out of long term coach in 1 spot...shouldn't there be a benefit such as more regular Ncaa?
I guess it’s what you consider as “expect more”. When you think of all the coaches who have been in one program for 20 years (or at least a very long time), they’re like coach K, Jim Boheim, Roy Williams, Jay Wright, Tommy Bennett, they’ve all won national championships. Do I expect the same for Mooney because he has been here that long and are my expectations exponential in the sense that I expect NCAA year 1 of Mooney, Sweet 16 year 5, Final Four year 15, and National Championship year 20? No I do not and I’m sure we all can agreed that is not realistic (as much as I would love that). Now, I agree that we should be winning championships/making NCAAs at a more consistent basis and I don’t think a poor performance this season takes away from the accomplishments of the past 5 seasons: notably winning COY and A10 regular season last year. I’m not making an excuse here or saying that I’ll be happy going 8-22 this year and pretend that it’s okay, but I do also recognize that down years happen. We’re only 3 games in the season though and I still want to be optimistic.
I figured Mooney at year 20 is a better, more experienced coach, better recruiting, more connections for scheduling, all leading to better performance.
I agree with longer tenure means more experience and more experience (should) lead to better things like scheduling, easier ability to recruit players that fit system, but like I’ve said many times before the college landscape is changing. Scheduling is becoming even harder to do for everybody and while I think UR benefits greatly from the transfer portal era, one downside is that we don’t know how all the individual talent we can get will gel together, even with earlier summer practices. Yes, a more experience coach should ease that transition quickly, but there are a lot of other factors too.

Yet they will tell us we're 1 of the top basketball programs in the nation! It's like that saying...don't piss on someone's leg and tell them it's raining
If you don’t like us saying this then fine, totally your right to do so. But in my opinion, I don’t think one can have problem with us not being vocal enough and public with our expectations and standards for ourselves (like many have praised the VCU AD for doing so) and then also having a problem when we make a claim of confidence saying we’re a top team in a country - claiming that it is hyperbolic and out of touch with reality.

17 for a guy that had ncaa expectations year 1 under Moon - even I didn’t have that - u make a lot of excuses for him imo. Bottom line it’s reasonable to have had a lot more accomplishments out of a 20 year coach here. & not be in this position again w a poor UR team which happens too regularly. If someone had a Time Machine & went back to when we hired Moon & said he’d be here 20 years in the A10 & this is what u get - 3 NCAAs 9-25 vs vcu etc - NOBODY would believe it. Because it doesn’t happen in sports and coaches. Moonicorn. So some of us still waiting & wondering when we reap the 20 year coach benefits.

Also I’d have zero issue with us shouting that statement from the rooftops. I liked the confidence except 2 problems…

1. when do we actually say or act like 1 of the top bball programs in nation otherwise? Let’s be accountable to it. We put it in a self serving press release to justify another extension. That’s the only time. Shady.
2. It was hyperbolic.

so many damn excuses, how about we win a few meaningful games how does that sound? Then you won't have to be typing up these essays all the time. I will never understand the sentiment of some people here where it feels like they have allegiance to the coach first and then the program and university are secondary.

Yes, if you look at Mooney's entire tenure, I think you bring up valid point about the overall NCAA tournament success. My point, though, is that I am not looking at Mooney's entire tenure and instead looking at his recent history because the world of college basketball changes so much in a multitude of ways that even 10 years ago seems like ancient history. This goes both ways too. I have not brought up Mooney's back-to-back NCAA's in '10 '11 and sweet 16 because it was that long ago. I have been on record here saying that 2018 or 2019 would've been the time where a very good argument could've been made to let Mooney go as a coach. But we did not and we shouldn't ignore the results we've had since.

Personally, I don't think its fair to making sweeping generalizations after every loss as an emblematic representation of UR's "complacency" with our basketball program when there's no evidence of that. We have a top tier practice facility, top NIL program, and have won 2 championships in a 3 year stretch. We won the A10 tournament in 2021-2022 and in 2022-2023 finished with a record of 13-14 followed by going 23-10 (15-3 in A10) and winning A10 regular season championship in 2023-2024. Does this mean that we were committed to basketball in '22, but complacent in '23, and then committed to basketball again in '24? Or could this mean that down years inevitably happen to every program - especially now where teams essentially have a new roster every year?

Again, I am not trying to use this as an excuse for our performance to start this season. There is a lot we need to work on and I still believe in our guys to put together a good season.

sentiment has turned drastically the past week.
we've certainly started slow. I'm bummed too. and there's reason to believe the sky is falling.
but I don't think we're a team that will shoot 14% from 3 and 38% from the line again.
we graduated a lot but we brought in talented guys. I still believe in young guys like Tyne and Tanner.

it's tough to see the path after that Charlotte game, but I won't be surprised if we start playing good ball ... hopefully soon.

for the record I still have hope and think the team will improve too

also down years happen inevitably...yes to many programs, but 7-8 times in 20 years? If this year is another down year I think that's about the number we're at. Gotta laugh at the down year excuse when it's that frequent.

He had really good players during those “down” periods and had he ADJUSTED his coaching to their abilities instead of jamming them into compartments I suggest we would have had greater success.

Mooney might be experimenting a little too much on different line-ups on the courts and also going to the bench more frequently, which is great if a player is tired or in foul trouble, but may also be limiting their flow of the game. Historically, by A10 play we’ve seen him go about 8-9 guys deep during a game, which I agree is the right amount. I think we’re going to see more tightening of the line-up sooner than later this year.

My two cents... apologies if already mentioned but I'm too grouchy about this teams performance and coaching to read all.
Walz is SO not the answer; Beagle should start it's obvious. We're not getting two bigs on the floor at the same time this year...I've watched enough to know Solis is not a fix for this year either.
Put Neakovich at the 5 and take your chances with Beagle and him facilitating the offense. Walz should be traded for a player to be named later.
