Official hot seat thread Mooney

How can you be disappointed by this season? The goal is always to make the NCAAs, win the A10, and beat VCU. We did all of that. Our win against VCU even knocked them out of the NCAAs! And we won a tournament game against a top 20 team! Of course the regular season could have been better, but the final two weeks of the season more than made up for it. The A10 tournament through the first round of the NCAAs was probably the best 5 game stretch in Richmond basketball history.
I think what Non-Homer was saying is that we had a 7% chance of winning the A-10 tournament and about a 17% chance of beating Iowa. Only these 5 miracle wins saved Mooney from being fired, this year or next year for sure. I see your and his side to this. There was a very fine line between disaster and success this year, and I am very happy for the young men that pulled it off.

I think negative people will just always be negative. Not a lot can change that.

2 years ago: "Yes, we went 24-7, but it's all about the dance and no guarantee we would have been dancing".
This year: " Yes, we had a great year end run, beating VCU, Dayton, Davidson, and won the A-10 tourney, made the dance, and beat Big Ten champ Iowa, but we kind of struggled during the regular season". LOL.

I agree 2011... there can be no question the five wins in eight days was the greatest stretch in our basketball history...my memories of 1984, 1988, 1991, 1998 and 2011 are sketchy, but I believe the excitement and passion of the reawakened fan base for the "Giant Killers" was unmatched as well...perhaps we benefitted from some pent up demand!

I can't overlook and ignore the lack of Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances since 2011, but believe Coach Mooney earned the chance to rebuild and see if he can take advantage of all of the publicity and excitement this time...apparently he already has through the 2023-24 season...

Ha! I have no idea what AD Hardt will do with the contract...I depend on the message board for that type of info...

I would agree if you had said that the 5-game stretch produced some of the most improbable results in Richmond basketball history.

Those who are satisfied with the overall result last season deserve Mooney as their coach for life. I'm certain that It can be a lot better!

Actually If I was going to compare, it wouldn't be at the end of a season.
It would be the 4 game stretch in 2004 (bookended by Dayton losses) - @Temple, @Kansas, @Xavier, home GW

Some act like we were terrible this year, under .500, got blown out by lots of teams, and then got lucky in the A-10 tourney. Was it really that miraculous? How was it lucky? We were favored against Rhode Island, and I think very slight underdogs to VCU, Dayton, and Davidson. All 3 of those teams had beaten us in the final seconds this year. It's not like we were double digit underdogs to all of them. Did we need a few comebacks? Sure, but if weren't a good team, we likely could not have rallied and won. The run was amazing, but anytime a team wins a conference tourney in a quality conference, they have an incredible run. Whether it's 3 games or 4 games, the odds are not in your favor. But, this was no fluke. Far from it. It's a shame some of our own fans, in their constant need to get on our coach, try to downplay what our team did this year.

That might be the best 4 game stretch, but not the best 5 game stretch!

Temple was 5-8 after we beat them, and finished 15-14. X was 10-7 after we beat them, and dropped their next 2 to fall to 10-9 and 2-5 in the A-10. GW was 11-8 after we beat them. It was a nice stretch because it included Kansas, but I don't think there is any way those 4 games compare to the run we just had, especially the timing of the runs.

I will never forget seeing these 5 wins in person.... insanely exciting and emotional .. (yes I have forgotten the Providence game) ...

Just because there results were improbable doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be appreciated.

I am disappointed with the last decade under Mooney, but I am not disappointed with last season.

I'm not taking anything away from the recent week+1.
I'm just saying 2004 is the other memorable week. We were 8-8 1-3 before that one.

2022 We just beat Kenpom 132 URI, 63 VCU, 44 Dayton, 40 Davidson, 13 Iowa all neutral

2004 We lost to 74 Dayton home, Beat 90 Temple, 18 Kansas, 21 Xavier all away, 50 GW home, before losing in OT at 74 Dayton.

If both were NET instead of Kenpom, with the Quad system, I don't see either run looking too bad. ;)

I think each game in the 2022 run being an elimination game, securing a bid, and knocking VCU out of the NCAAs contribute to the run being great as well.

As usual, the answer is somewhere in the middle. Obviously, the end to the season is exactly what the fan base is looking for EVERY year. However, to believe that the end of this season means that the fan base will see such performances on a more consistent basis is folly. In terms of a reward to Mooney for winning the A10 and a game in the NCAAs, that is exactly why there are INCENTIVES in a contract. There is no way that the reward for winning in a single season with the most experienced team in UR history is a long contract extension and a significant increase in pay. At best, it should be a couple years and a modest bump in salary. Anything else and UR is simply overpaying. However, I can’t tell someone else what to do with their money. I just know it won’t be any of mine.

in other words, 10 more years of mediocrity with a carrot dangled in front of us like the last couple of weeks in March.
Why do you persist in thinking it will be another 10 years?. I’d bet Mooney doesn’t even think, or want that.
If he keeps the program winning and going to the NCAA’s he’d leave money on the table by signing a 10 year
contract. .

some fans were so dead set in their belief that this team couldn't, this style couldn't, this coach couldn't ... that they couldn't let themselves enjoy a minute of this season until probably the last minute of the A10 tournament VCU game, if not the last minute of the entire A10 tournament. and yet we'll look back on it as one of the best seasons we've ever had.

Guys, I signed the petition and believe the program could potentially be better with a new leader at the helm.

With that said, I can definitely also make the argument that the program is trending in the right direction. Mooney deserves credit for recruiting this most recent team and putting a winning product on the court the last 3 years. I firmly believe our ‘19-20 team would have made the tournament and actually would have made a deep run to the Sweet 16 / Elite 8. I recognize this is speculation, but you can’t simply ignore it either. Last year was an anomaly with those Covid pauses and truncated schedule, but the reality is the last two full years our team has won 24 games and been very competitive.

Again, I was as disappointed as anybody in the results during the regular season but the conference tourney exists for a reason and a lot of the wrongs were made right during this stretch.

Continuing to make the same arguments you were making two months ago now is irrelevant and do not hold water.
So I believe he gets an extension, maybe even a raise and for reasons previously stated those are likely justified.

but your last statement is emblematic of a continuing issue which is the willingness to accept a result that is short of modest expectations. We were extremely fortunate to win the A10 tournament, as we had zero chance at the tournament otherwise. One tournament in the last decade-plus is still a totally relevant argument that holds plenty of water.

I will hope like others that he has somehow turned a corner but need to see it happen again and not in another five years.

I don’t mean to disrupt this conversation but I made it to New Orleans and had a couple drinks. Now watching the Uconn-Stanford game and see Nelson-Ododa’s sister is playing.

Anybody remember the time when he wore an eyepatch? That was wild

Not only that, but they relentless attacked the positive ones who thought this team could.

How were we "extremely fortunate" to win the tourney? Did we get lucky? Did we play poorly, and the other teams all just stunk up the court? So, when teams beat us, it is because either our coach or our players stink, maybe even both, but when we beat other teams, including the top 3 A-10 teams back to back to back, we are "extremely fortunate"???

Extremely fortunate = Lucky as hell

It's possible to have enjoyed every second of the a10 tourney and Iowa game, as I did, while being incredibly happy for the players and staff, as I was, and still be able to put the past 11 years into proper perspective, as I will.

It was a phenomenal run at the end, the likes of which we quite literally have never seen as fans of this program. That alone makes it very unexpected, but that's also the beauty of spotts -- the unexpected happens every now and then. The team absolutely earned it and achieved the goal that we all had for it, just when it seemed that goal was completely out of reach.

All that said, one great season doesn't just erase the previous decade. The shaming of those of us who have wanted a coaching change, as if an improbable (yes, winning the a10 as a six seed with four wins in four days while being down double digits in multiple tourney games and benefiting when Malachi Smith got injured DOES qualify as improbable) tourney run somehow justifies a decade without any NCAA bids, is laughable and shortsighted.

We all just want to win and see the program reach higher levels consistently, because that is absolutely possible here. We proved it this year and I am celebrating that. But it's possible to celebrate and still look at the big picture. We now need to capitalize on this run, which we didn't do 11 years ago, and remain at this level consistently,

I agree posters should not be attacking one another, we deleted many but could not delete all. Took heat for it too. Don't care!

Almost as bad though is the I told you so.
True, but I think a few of us have been more than fair with any kind of "I told you so". Reading the board in January and February would have made a whole year of I told you so posts justifiable. If you want to think the very few I told you so posts, if you can even call them that, compares to months and months of daily attacks, fine, keep thinking that. I will choose to think otherwise.

Mostly everyone is happy about making the NCAA tournament. Making that run was something I didn't see coming. However, going several years being .500 shouldn't be accepted. We continue to praise a great season. When you have several years of .500 or being middle of the pack. I don't accept those results. Winning the regular season and titles are what we should expect. Continue to pay someone six figures for being mediocre. The next few years look very rough in my view. I could be wrong. But Mooney has a history of underperformed with young talent. And continue to say we are young.

How many teams have won the A10 tournament by winning four games to do so? I’ll give you a hint: one team had done that in the previous ten A10 tournaments, so it’s extremely uncommon.

My comment has nothing to do with our team or our coach, frankly we should have never been in that position. I’m commenting on the reality that it’s very difficult to do what they did. So kudos to them but yes, we were extremely fortunate to have won the tournament. And everyone here knew that going in, including you I assume. If you don’t get the probability I can’t really help you.

I think it may have been, too. The 1988 team did take out a #4 and a #5 at the NCAA, though.

Let's be more than fair about this. After CM's two best years, 2010 and 2011 - with an at-large bid and a championship with a certain at-large bid (according to the committee chair), we offered a new 10-year deal. So, 5 times the "success period."

This year's team had zero chance at an at-large bid, but let's give CM the benefit of the doubt and give him the same extension. He got this team to play to its potential for 8 days, so a 40-day contract extension sounds about right.

I 100% get the probability, but if you can't see how silly it sounds to say we were "extremely fortunate" to win the A-10 tourney, I can't really help you. If you see Jacob, Grant, and the others, make sure you tell them how "extremely fortunate" they were to win the A-10 tourney. See if they agree with you.

I will add that I enjoy your posts, and appreciate the way you say things when we disagree. I often see your point even when we disagree, but we are far apart of this one. Extremely fortunate is the last thing I would say to describe the run. But, all good.

It’s not silly, it’s super pragmatic. It’s far sillier to think that somehow that magical run was either likely or repeatable. It’s not a knock on the guys in spite of your assertion that I’m making it so, I’m proud of what they did. Yet it was still fortunate just going off the numbers.

But this is where we diverge, so be it.

absolutely possible and I'm glad you did. others here may not have. some were hoping for a quick exit to end the misery and move on.

are you putting the past 11 years in perspective? we did go 9 tournaments without a bid and that's too long, but we had some good seasons. the past 3 years our teams were very strong. we talked about letting him go after the 2nd 12 win season and it would have made sense. the buyout was probably too high at that time. but we also liked how the roster was set up. we thought we were on the right path. and that thinking was spot on. we had a great year shut down by Covid. last year was disappointing but weird, then they came back this season and succeeded.

seriously. if anyone said anything that didn't bash Mooney, they were accused of suporting him at the expense of the program or being a "truther".

You guys are now being inflammatory:). Fan1 always censoring me and sman and 4700 keep stirring things up. I have been trying to let this drop but u guys that put Mooney above program cannot. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt but we cannot undo the decade of mooniocrity.

yes, I grew tired of the fight and wanted peace in the stands and on the board! :D

things did look bleak towards the end, before the ride. thought for a minute there that this team wouldn't play to their potential. they sure did though, and it was a lot of fun. happy things aren't divisive now, though I realize that could turn quickly next year if we don't succeed in the portal soon.

Yep, no reason a good coach cannot have some success in the portal following that run. Need to strike. No it is not easy to go out and get three players and incorporate them and keep team chemistry, but that is why you make 1.3 mill per year. I think that has been a problem in the past, and maybe earlier this year - when you know it is your spot, no matter what - it has to be human nature for some players to relax. Not all, but some. Let's land 3 potential contributors, and battle it out in practice.

Stop playing the victim card. It’s exhausting. Welcome to the internet — some people were sarcastic about your posts.

I love this team and was as optimistic as anybody about them. I have even said that I thought we could win the tournament. If you do not see how we were extremely fortunate to win the tourney after a disappointing season than it is you who needs help.

And no, making the tournmanent doesn’t right every wrong over the past several years. Definitely more reflective to the unbelievable talent of Jacob Gilyard than Mooney being a good coach.

What a strange post that was. Geez, long island, what the heck did I do to piss you off? Funny how you got all those likes from those that never gave us a chance to win the tourney. Congrats, you keep good company. I keep waiting for someone to tell me how we were so fortunate to win the tourney? I don't think I've heard a legit answer yet. I will tell you the same thing I said that you copied: If you see Jacob, Grant, and the others, make sure you tell them how "extremely fortunate" they were to win the A-10 tourney. See if they agree with you.

And, my goodness, way to show your true colors with that last statement. What a ridiculous statement that was. Thank goodness for Jacob because Mooney sucks, right? Just like thank goodness for Kevin Anderson because Mooney sucks, right? it's beyond unbelievable. Isn't it possible that maybe the players AND the coaches made this run possible, or does that just happen at every school but ours? Newsflash: Kansas and UNC have good players AND good coaches, their players didn't "bail their coaches out". And, isn't it the job of coaches to recruit and get good players? I guess you will never give a coach credit if you don't give him credit for getting good players, but when the good players win, you give all the credit to them. Strange. We just had one of our best, most exciting runs ever, and we can't even wait a few weeks before we start with the onslaught of criticism toward our coach. It is pathetic.

Our board: "Our coach sucks because he never makes 2nd half adjustments"

Our board after we come back from two 15 point 2nd half deficits in the A-10 tourney: "Thank goodness the players bailed out our awful coach."

And, if reading posts of mine are so "exhausting", why not put me ignore? I took everyone off ignore after our late season run because I assumed the board might be fun again, but boy was I wrong.

I don’t mind reading your posts. I enjoy them and find many of them informative — you’re definitely a top poster on here. But you do play the victim card too often and take things on here personally which you should adjust as it’s either in good fun or comes from somebody that you should just dismiss.

I’ll reply more fully tomorrow on why we are fortunate. It’s rather obvious but I’ll explain further.
