Tonight's loss marks our 11th straight non-conference road loss - we haven't won a true non-conference road game since December 5th, 2021 @ Northern Iowa. That's 1,109 days ago! With no more opportunties to break the streak this year, we're going to be pushing FOUR years since we've last won one of these games. Unacceptable.

Mooney talks so much about how hard it is to build a quality at-large resume as a mid-major in this environment. Winning a single non-conference road game across three seasons of basketball would probably help a bit.

I think I have been to 7 of them - most haven't been close - Charleston, Toledo, Auburn, W&M, in '22, Clemson @ Greenville, Florida @Ft. Lauderdale, Charlotte

I'm actually not even counting the Clemson and Florida games, since they're technically "neutral site." Here's my count:

11/14/22 @ Charleston
11/30/22 @ Toledo
12/3/22 @ W&M
11/15/23 @ BC
11/29/23 @ Wichita St.
12/6/23 @ Northern Iowa
3/19/24 @ VT (NIT)
11/13/24 @ Charlotte
11/16/24 @ Bucknell
12/8/24 @ Auburn
12/18/24 @W&M

Playing close on the road means nothing. Winning is the objective. This administration constantly lets Mooney schedule weak out of conference teams and we still can't win games. Sitting here now watching GM play Duke after they just beat Tulane and we have to play D2_schools because we can't get anyone to play us. Its a joke at this point. Either go in another direction with the program or move to a lower conference and be happy competing at that level.

We should have had all sorts of momentum going into the offseason after being the surprise regular season champ. And Mooney somehow managed to translate that success into the worst team he’s ever had. Great job dude.
I totally get the sentiment, although it seems increasingly likely that we maybe just caught lightning in a bottle and perhaps that alone makes the momentum continuation a low likelihood.

Last years success was maybe not sustainable, as evidenced by our end of season swoon. And of course the ss were experiencing now.

I meant in terms of being able to attract the kind of players who could keep us at that level in a sustainable way. I agree that it was basically the perfect storm scenario, but good players want to play for good teams. We were a good team and should have translated that into great recruiting and more sustained success. Instead, we vomited, tripped in it and landed in it face first.

They only move to lower conferences for the teams that succeed at the level they are at.
WBB will be DII if they keep it up.

Just drove thru Richmond on 95. Where is the Congratulations Chris Mooney billboard? I thought he got one for tying for best record in A10 finally after 22 attempts.
I guess Hardt decided to wait another year or two for his first NC road win in 4 years.

We lose at W and M. W and M gets drubbed by 20 at VCU on Sunday. There’s your relative strength and performance. What are the odds we get a split with VCU this season - thinking something like nothing?

I am seeing W&M’s bball success on X and was curious. What are everyone’s thoughts on Brian Earl as a coach? Princeton grad, coached at Cornell, and is having great success at W&M year 1. On paper, he would be a great fit at UR.

Mooney isn’t going anywhere. Earl needs more time. I liked him as hire for W&M (SFSpidur can pull that history up if he likes) but he didn’t kill it at Cornell. Losing record & zero NCAAs. But improved them incrementally & u have solid programs to overcome in ivy like Princeton Harvard Yale.

Think just another example of what a right hire can do. Breathes life into program & can happen right away. We r so lacking energy within our program. So I’d take him solely because we need a change of any course. Any warm body at this point might do. But his pedigree is too much like Mooney. We love us some Ivy connections…yawn. If he just kills it for a couple years at W&M sure maybe he makes the list. He’s doing well for WM let’s see how he finishes too. But he’d be down our list regardless because coaches would be lining up for the Spiders job imo.

I agree that Mooney isn’t going anywhere. Like I said before, the earliest I can see is after 2026-2027 season. Just interesting to talk about whenever that time comes. You think Spiders go for an upcoming young head coach kind of guy from a smaller program, an assistant coach from a P5 program, a big name head coach fired from P5, or internal hire.

My guess is there’s a 75% chance it’ll be young upcoming or internal hire
25% chance the other 2 options

Internal hire? No. But I could see Hardt going that way. That would basically signal that we don't want to "compete".

Still remember after the 2010-11 season. 17, if you go back to message boards history, I was a huge Mooney supporter. I think I have the resume as one of the most balanced posters in the history of spidernation board when it comes to my opinion on moon :) . But after that season, and could have my timeline messed up a little, but that was when he was getting interest from BC and others. And my instinct was, great job moon, time to move on up. Just felt that it had run its course. Was hoping he would take BC job. We were a super red hot coaching destination at that point in time. We could have had 5 top hot coaches to pick from. Little did I know that we would slide sooooo much and not see NCAA for a moonllenium. A freaking moonllenium before we would see NCAA. Big miss after that season was we went after and were in the running for some top 100 types. Struck out and didn't have greatest option B's. And I'll admit, was all in on those top guys, but think it probably cost us some opportunity lost on other guys.

I agree with GK in that we would still have guys lining up. But again, I see some of the same hurdles with the PQ/Hardt power base as you have now. So my ideal is Hardt retires, a Ukrop type steps in and at least balances PQ, we do an exhaustive national search, and get a banger.

But reality is you are correct. Triumvirate is fully invested in the long game HS recruits (though as pointed out that has not been moons strongpoint) build in this NIL era. Lot of holes in this plan. Number one, if any of these guys are actually elite players they will get poached. So yes, agree following 26-27 season is absolute earliest. And then moon will probably pull something out as he will have that motivation to coach his son (whether he is a walk on or a legit player). I have not been tracking his kids, and did not realize one was already a freshman in HS. This plan to coach his sons at UR is the most disheartening hoops news I have heard in awhile. Really really hits b/c if true (and not doubting) it gives him some motivation to do anything he can to hang on next few years.

Happy Tuesday Spidernation!!!!

Danny is a good player, not sure what his ceiling is but obviously he will be on the UR roster in four years if his dad is still the coach. I was impressed the few times I watched him in person but I'm no talent evaluator. Here are his freshman year highlights so far.

Didn't realize that with Coach for Life also came with giving his kids schollies on our team as well. Man, the University of Richmond really is going all out to support the Mooney family.

Dang, those are some nice highlights EL

Earl needs more time.
looking at the resume, he was an assistant for 9 years at Princeton and a head coach for 8 years at Cornell before taking the W&M job. he's 48 years old. does he really need more time as a coach?
