NCAA Tournament - Tourney Thread

NCAA men's Final Fours have been, and will continue to be, held in domes. So raised floors are here to stay.

Think you are correct. Don't remember but one or two instances where a player went off the raised floor and fortunately was unhurt. That is my concern that sooner or later a player will suffer injury because of going over the edge of a raised floor.

Because a basketball court is one-tenth the size of a football field, so the sightlines would be messed up as you tried to bring temporary seats down toward the court.

Thanks, figured it was related to that in some way but it still doesn't quite make sense to me. It's not like they raise the court 50 feet off the ground.

And if part of the goal is to sell more seats, it feels like that's a zero-sum outcome either way. There's going to be someplace you simply can't put /sell extra seats. You can't sell seats closer to the floor if you raise it because they'd be below the court. So just put as many extra seats as close to the court as you can.

I'm also not sure how many sightlines are being improved in 70,000-seat arena by raising the first five or 10 feet off the ground. But I guess I'm missing something because they obviously have always done it this way.

As someone who has attended every FF since 2009 (last season the exception due to no fans) it definitely makes a difference. If the court was not raised it would be incredible difficult to see what is going on due to the huge student sections behind each basket. Those sections are on the ground, so with the raised court you can see the action. Even with where I’m sitting (section 102, 4th row) there is a point where the student section going nuts and mascot are blocking part of the action.

But ply I guess my thought there would is that the student seating must not go all the way down to the true floor either or else the first few rows of those fans would be below the raised court, right?

Wherever the court is located, that becomes your base point and you have to fill in with seats upward from there. I guess I just can't figure out why raising it from its normal level makes any difference in the grand scheme. Either way is going to affect someone's point of view and create some areas where you can't sell seats, or so it seems.

Yeah it's to help with the sight lines. I'm no engineer but they figured out it was better. If you go back to the first final4 in superdome carolina vs. gtown there was no raised court. But they have a lot more temporary seats now on both sides of court, seats that aren't there for a Saints game or in another football stadium.

Speaking of football stadiums, when Bacot hurt his ankle it looked like he was originally going back to locker room to check out. Now it's possible he just needed room to walk it off. But maybe he intended to go to locker room and then was like screw that, by time I get back there and return the game will basically be over. Why u also saw players and coaches taking those golf carts.

Yeah, you can still sell seats all the way down to the ground. The floor is just at eye-level then.

While the Final is blue blood vs blue blood, I do think we have the two teams who have played the best in the tournament playing each other for the Championship and that is all we can ask for. Not a UNC fan at all, but Bacot is from RVA, Manek is a fun player to watch, as is Caleb love, so I will root for them tonight. I like that despite being UNC, they don't seem to be comprised of a bunch of one and done players that are typical of most of the blue bloods now.

Also Hubert Davis seems like a really good dude. So go, UNC I guess.

23 the student sections behind both baskets have always been on ground level and flat without sloping up. So the students at the back really have to have a tough time seeing the action. Usually media is behind them with seating back to “normal” of each row being elevated above the row in front of it. We are right behind the media

Many of us older guys remember the fiasco at the Richmond Coliseum years ago when Michigan State played UVa in Richmond. The ice from the Richmond hockey team's floor began to melt, resulting in condensation on the basketball floor only a few inches above. UVa had to forfeit the game, once it got to the point of players sliding everywhere. This could have happened anywhere that an arena had a hockey team. Talk started soon afterward about ways to prevent this from happening again.

Stork, if my recollection serves me OK, I think you have been able to catch a practice or two and provide a very nice report. If you have the ability to do so this coming summer and fall, that would be great. If security gives you any trouble, just tell them you are dog sitting for PQ.

I was at that game, sitting in the very top endzone level at the Coliseum in one of those small groups of seats. Felt like I was watching the game from the moon. What a crazy night.

UNC didn’t beat us down, then choke against our rivals to give them a ticket to the final 4. F*** KU forever. They win that game and we don’t have the 12 year nightmare we just woke up from. I can stomach rooting for UNC with Bacot.

And this too. Never forget the Morris twins trying to start shit with Duinker in the warm-ups.

The only thing I don't get is why the floor must be raised in a dome in a NCAA game but not an NBA game?
That just doesn't seem accurate...

As much as I liked KU the Morris twins were two thugs that continued to be thugs in the NBA. Never enjoyed rooting for them. And they were from S Jersey. I think one of them is still playing?

They’re both still playing. Markieff was out for four months of this season with whiplash after Jokic pushed him. Marcus also missed a bunch of games with injuries.

They both are really good pros. Marcus starts for the Clippers and averages over 15 points per game. But yeah, Markieff tried to cheap shot the wrong dude in Jokic.

when are NBA games played in football stadiums?
I know the answer ($$$$) but why isn't the Final Four played in an NBA arena. It would just make for such a better product, playing the National Championship in a facility that is meant for that sport.

as it is it's tough to get tickets. you can fit 70,000 in a football stadium converted for basketball. I've been in those upper deck seats a mile from the court. you end up watching the game on the big screen instead. but it's still an event and a memory. it's a great 3 days.

F*** around and find out. Had 0 problem seeing what goes around comes around. He initiated with a dirty play that was not basketball related and turned his back like a little b**** instead of manning up and got everything he deserved. I smiled ear to ear when I saw the play.

If the Morris brothers were white they would have been all-time Duke players in every sense

I know no one wants to hear of someones gambling woes....but as UNC was dominating Baylor I was trying to put $50 bucks on the heels to win it all at +2400 odds. Realized that money was currently held on some other bets in my account so opted to wait for one of those games I had to finish and use it for that bet. Unforutnately I lost all of them and the annual $100 bucks that I put into fanduel. (I called St. Pete beating UK and got a nice reward for that). Anyways as I sit here watching the UNC game I am sick to my stomach as that $50 bet would of yielded over 100k.

I hate myself for having self control.

Sorry Ferrum hearing that. Talk about a blow out.

One stat tells it all ..... NC 18-2 ad in 2nd chance points. We all know that happening too often as Spider fans.

Ferrum don’t beat yourself up. +2400 means 24-1 odds. Not 2400-1. And there’s no way unc was ever 2400-1 even if they were getting blown out by Baylor not other way around at time which meant just 4 more wins for unc.

you lost out on $1200. A nice hit for sure but very far away from 120k.

Yea my mathlexia was on full display there lol after double checking instead of impulsively posting. Came back here hoping no one would notice. Oh well, it stays up as we die like men on here. Rather look like an idiot than to have legit thought I lost out on 100k.
