NCAA Coaching Carousel

Not sure best spot for this...but for those that remember Steve Robinson was a legit candidate for UR job back when Moon was hired. Interviewed by Jim Miller. Would have been interesting tho nobody knows how it would have worked out. Blast from the past.

He had one gift NCAA berth in five years at FSU, when they were 18-14. Never came close to finishing .500 in the ACC. Had a losing record in each of his last four seasons at FSU. Was 21-38 his final two years there.

I can easily see why he wasn't hired.

2 for 2 NCAAs b4 that at Tulsa tho. But yeah I get it I remember not being that enamored with him. Because retread.

But I’m also confident if u gave any decent coach 20 years here they would have better results than what Moon has produced.

Didn't we also swing and miss on McKillop as well?
dont think he wanted to leave DC

Yes, when replacing Beilein. That’s when McKillop was available & we could have had him. Sources. Not when replacing Wainwright. Mckillop son was rising senior when we hired Mooney. There 1st time not 2nd. Miller screwed up Mckillop would have made seamless transition from JB and more on brand for UR. I think that is 1 reason Miller hired Moon. Things got bad btw Miller wainwright & ur admins toward end. Some off court/academic issues w guys like Merritt Sandoval Nelson. Miller wanted to go back to Beilein mold. The smart shooter type with fluidity. & Moon was Princeton guy too fit the part.

That was 100% the feeling on the message board at the time. I can't remember any other candidates, I do remember Mooney coming a bit out of left field as the hire, as no one was expecting the 1 year interim head coach from Air Force to be on our radar.

it did come out out of left field, he wasn't on the radar. Miller kept search tightly wrapped for most part. Robinson is only other known candidate I recall too. Although this board must have had great suggestions!

But as I posted above Miller thought Mooney was the archetype. Win with the smart, lesser athlete style, whatever u want to call it. Get back to Beilein mold (tho Beilein recruited some great players). Just an overall reversal of Wainwright since there was bad blood. Miller spoke to this basically. Publicly and privately. I'm not speculating. and here was Moon - played at Princeton and ran the Princeton offense, we'll outsmart em!

and Air Force did have a good 4-year run if u look at the results. Unsurprisingly the 1 year Mooney was the head coach was the worst one by far.

And here we are 20 years and several extensions later. Buyers’ remorse? Stayed too long? Realistic hopes for the future probably around 55 pct?
