NCAA Coaching Carousel

That one seemed a little odd to me. But maybe that is a good compromise for guys like Bennett and Wright, guys that hate the NIL, but still love to coach. Don't have to deal with it as much in IVY but is a very solid league.

Penn alum. But he's also about to turn 66.

but the key question on Martelli...did he hang out at Blackie's?
I had a funny feeling you would want to know that answer. Yes, its a funny relationship - to come in under the wing of all around good guy and family man Jared Grasso. I am guessing he used to hang there, and then after seeing what kind of trouble and financial and employment loss it could cause, he started staying home more. This does seem like more of a stretch hire than usual for VCU, which means he will probably only win about 72% of the time vs Moon.

I can see VCU being fans being lukewarm as this is not a huge name on the radar, but given the success their AD has had in hiring coaches lately - I would trust the decision and got a feeling it will work out for them. I don't think they were super excited about Rhoades either when he came back after short period at Rice that was very uneventful from a record standpoint, and they were def not super happy after Rhoades first year of going 18-15 and not making NCAA or any post-season. But that worked out for them, right.

Not a lot of head coaching experience from Martelli Jr, but maybe that is where if his dad is on staff - that makes up for it. He seems to have success in the portal - his Bryant team this past year that made NCAA as a 15 seed - top 3 scorers were transfers from St. Johns, Memphis, and Bonnies. And really - that is the name of the game these days, can you find the good players in the portal and achieve instant success. The years of building a program with HS recruits and watching them mature are over. You still need HS recruits, but you need them to play right away and use them before they leave, and then grab the rest from the portal and repeat year after year.

While not a flashy hire, I think it will be one that works out for the Rams. The last 4 have worked out - why wouldn't this one.

This is the first time they haven't gotten the guy they wanted. Let's hope the kind of kids they typically have recruited aren't exactly bowled over at the thought of playing for a 70-year-old grandpa and his son who wouldn't have a job except for his last name.

Generally agree but this is by far the least accomplished hire they have made. The difference in the resume between Odom and Martelli is pretty stark. I'm sure they are disappointed; they had their sights set on Pitino (which seemed like a stretch to me) but Ram fans always think more highly of their program stature that reality dictates.

the main problem with building the roster will be keeping old man Martelli awake during recruiting visits

If Martelli makes the NCAA in the first 2 years on the job and continues to dominate UR like all past coaches, VCU fans will not be upset.

Odom I think was a right place and right time hire. He was an east coast guy, so getting him back in Virginia from Utah State was an easy sell. I just don't if the pool of candidates this year was all that great. Pitino - that was a stretch never going to happen. VCU doesn't hire P5 coaches who get fired and moving down, they always hire coaches moving up, but who was really moving up this year? Drake coach? But I would say with success he had - he was leapfrogging VCU to P5, which he did to end up at Iowa. We are also seeing more P5 schools it seems like hire NBA assistants. Likely because the NIL world more resembles NBA style of roster development.

I guess VCU could have targeted a P5 assistant - but that again goes outside their norm for hiring.

Again - agree not a sexy hire or big name. Not a huge record behind the name. But when your AD has done this successfully 4 times already, I would have faith in this being a good decision. Not a guarantee, but I would feel good about it.

Law of averages, sooner or later they will not be as successful with their hire, But they will correct it quickly.

Agree with that - and think your spot on, if a coach goes there an in 3 years has not made the NCAA tourney - they could be fired. Also think VCU has a different meaning of success than UR. They could win 23 games and just miss the NCAA tourney 2 straight years - and that coach would be on hot seat. At UR - that would be cause for celebration.

without knowing a thing about what our team or their team will look like next season....they will continue to own us
It's almost like a law of physics at this point. Most normal people would have thrown in the towel if they were continually and constantly someone's b*tch but fortunately we compensate Mooney incredible well for the honor.

Did anyone read "Thinner" by Stephen King? If so I feel like the guy eating the poison pie at the end, after he wakes up and sees his family already ate it. I am hoping to land some dudes in the portal even though moon will screw things up 4 out 5 years and will he extended no matter what. May as well eat the pie, eff it.
Honestly, perhaps long term best case scenario is that we don't have any more roster defections, Moon misses with his few portal hits, like last year and we finish with another 8-10 win season next year. That may get him the axe.

Worst case for me is that we get a couple decent players in the portal and Moon pulls off some .500 esque season and then he and his enablers can say look at the upward progress.

What happened to Send er off?
Has anyone wondered about the source of this last name? It is too close to Send Her Off.
It sounds like someone in England got angry at his wife and said "send her off" to a ship's captain. Now 200 years later, her descendant is coaching a basketball team at Kent State.

Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free...

Kent State apparently gave him an extension he couldn't refuse.

well played by him using Fordham. or Gallipoli just another miss.

but I think they got the better coach. Magpayo was on my UR list. I like him. darker horse but on the watch list. he's got a few Richmond connections too. Coached under McGeehan at Campbell, also I think with Hovde at Columbia. The Kyle Smith tree.

I could now see McGeehan at Fordham with him, if the Gary DeCesare package falls through at UR. But won't be a surprise to see some previous Richmond connection at Fordham.

Tho it won't be Jeff Neubauer. but someone pls bring back Jeff Neubauer it's time.

I spoke to some alumni at alumni weekend this past year asking where Neubauer might be - someone (can't remember who) said he is a professional poker player living out in las vegas. Guess he took that Fordham money and let it ride at the casino.

I see Fordham as a dead end job. Good place to make about 3 million dollars, but just not sure you can get them out of the basement of the A10.

that’s great! Even greater bc - I know I’ve told this story on here - but I once ran into Neubauer at Caesar’s poker room in Vegas. Random. Probably 20 years ago. Past his time at UR. Think he was HC at EKU. Some summer. He was out there recruiting the AAU tourneys. Or sort of maybe side gig to poker lol.

Talked Richmond briefly. He went thru that crazy ish at Fordham but I always liked Neubauer. Remember he was assistant under Dooley 1 year. Beilein kept him. Not common these days. Changed his whole trajectory.

Yeah Fordham tough job. Do well then bolt quickly if u can.

That's one of the most random "career" change I've ever heard. Is he married to the train chick too?
