I don't see this impacting UR in anyway as Mooney I believe is safe for at least 2 more years, if not 3 and would expect he puts together a winning season in that timeframe. But interesting to see some of the rumors and happenings around college hoops and some of these could have an impact on the A10.

The shocker in my opinion is NC State and Keatts parting ways. This year has been a down year for them, but overall - he has been at NC State 8 years and they have made the tourney in 3 years, with a final four run just in 2024. I would think that final four run alone buys you 3-4 years after it occurs. He has won 20+ games in 5 out of the 8 seasons, and in 2 years made the NIT. So clearly looks like something behind the scenes happening in NC State. But that will be an opening that will likely get some looks and 2 coaches from the A10 high on the list for probably every major program will be VCU's Odom and Mason's Skinn. Odom will likely get a lot of calls. Skinn will likely be on the list of some programs - but probably a 3rd or 4th option if the search gets that far. But we could see some coaching changes in the A10.

this is deja vu from 7 years ago when we sucked for 2 years. fast forward to today ...

we sucked this year but Mooney has a bunch of years remaining.
we lose 20 games next year but like in 2019, our youth shows a ton of promise.
we show major improvement in 26-27 with a 20 win season.
we make the NCAA's in 27-28 and extend Mooney to 2033.

You literally just ruined my day.

Worse. That’s probably the ceiling.

25-26: very young. 5 freshman. Why we redshirted 2. Reset. Got extended 2 more years, 4 left after this year. No pressure. We can have another 8 win season next year no prob.

26-27: just show progression with previous year youth

27-28: don’t need to make ncaa. Just be sorta close in UR admin mind. It’s hard out there.

I'm not shocked. NC State was gonna fire him last year, but they went on a miracle run in the ACC tournament followed by a miracle run in the NCAA. So, they couldn't fire him after that. But this year, he laid a turd and NC State hit the firing button as Keatts reverted towards his mean.

Unlike our administration, NC State is able to see that a 3 week miracle conference tournament run and NCAA run is a one off and not building the program to be consistent NCAA team. We should have done the same thing in 2022, when Gilly and squad pulled off a miracle run in the A-10 tourney. We should have paid him for the accomplishment but not hamstrung the program by signing some big extension.

And at some point this sh*t has gotta stop with Mooney. He is not safe for 2 more years if he continues on this. I think next year if he pulls off a similar result to this year, we are going to move on. The fan base is tired and looking at Mooney he is tired as well.

The difference is the NIL factor. Even if we have a bunch of great young talent next year, that means probably half of it leaves for greener pastures the following year. And if the 28 members of our Spider Collective pony up more cash this offseason for transfers who end up sucking and we have another losing season, that gravy train is pulling into the station and deboarding

Keatts earned an automatic 2-year extension to 2030 with the Final Four run last year, but NC State was still willing to eat it after this year's disaster.
Thanks for the clarification. But again, you don't sign a coaching contract that you don't have the ability to get out of. We could get out of ours if we so chose too.

Yep they viewed as fluke. Tho a great fluke no doubt. He's also going to get paid what he's owed according to contact. This isn't some guy who gets fired with no severance. Can't feel too bad.

After final4 I could see being safe for 1 more year there but look at his results in acc last 7 years....8th, 6th, 9th, 15th, 6th, 10th, 16th. And there may have been some things going on behnd the scenes too idk.

And I'm not even taking issue with Moon extension after our own improbable run. Bottom line we won and won NCAA game too. But the extension this summer was management malpractice (Hallock and Hardt).

But I disagree about Moon not being safe after next year no matter what. I don't see us eating 3 years like a real program would. But I hope u r right.

I think Keatts had just a dramatic season difference that it grew a lot of concern due to fact he should have
drawn in some top notch recruits and transfers. Losing to Miami was the straw that broke the camels back.

FSU just hired a 34-year-old NBA assistant coach who's never been a head coach and never assisted in college to a 5 year deal.

also of note, Penn fired their head coach. while it's not Princeton, some might say that job would be a great fit for Mooney should he decide to get back in the Ivy someday.

If they don't keep Sanchez, they will get Odom
UVA's AD is on Hardt's level in my opinion. But UVA should absolutely conduct a national search for a new job, just not hand it to Sanchez, who has done nothing to distinguish himself either this year or in his stint at the head man of Charlotte.

There is no way if they conduct a national search, that Sanchez would be their top choice. But again, their AD is kinda lazy like Hardt.

IMO unless we go to NCAA in 2 of Mooney’s remaining years, I say it’s time to move on. We’ve seen the extension movie and the results too many times. Actually, I’d be more than happy to move on now.

Listening to radio - first couple names I heard mentioned for NC State job were Ryan Odom and Will Wade. Seems like some think Wade and NC State fan base are a match made in heaven.
I'm betting Odum goes to UVA...don't believe Cavs will keep Sanchez despite the Bennett connection...Odum has strong ties there from Dave's (his dad) time there on Terry Holland's staff for years...

Go Spiders!

Agree that UR sees no changes other than assistants in the next three years. Top candidate rumored for UVA is Shaka Smart.

Odom is a winner. Some may criticize cause he’s at the rivalry that dominates us regularly. He took Mooney’s lunch money and then some twice this year. He recruits well and coaches well. Don’t know if he’ll leave VCU if UVA comes calling, but I’m sure if they do, big $ will be offered and probably more than VCU can or will match.

It should tell Hardt something in that I doubt CM’s is ever mentioned anymore for prestigious openings. Don’t know that for fact, but would have to believe unless someone can state differently. We really are in the driver’s seat with him, and certainly no need to chase or extend until his current contract and extension is over. That would just be idiotic. But from what we’ve seen, would it surprise anyone?

I'd take Carla Williams over Hardt any day of the week. Look at swimming, baseball, lacrosse and tennis. She needs to redeem herself post-Elliott on the football front and we'll see who she gets in place of Sanchez. But their overall athletic success rate is outstanding.

Depending on what you read and what you believe Odom is the first choice of the NC State AD. Wade is second choice.

Go figure

Is CM ever mentioned for any opening, not limited to “prestigious” openings?

GK, think you need to strike Richie off your list. Just watched Furman go 10 terrible offensive possessions in a row while coach just sat their with dumb look on his face. Giving me moon vibes that guy.

Richey fell down my list a while ago. Like the Richmond O my list has lot of fluidity. But good work 23 & ty for validating. U r on the search committee. I agree some Moon vibes. Richey is ok. Just lower tier. I would really like to show more of the work put into robust list but I feel like there’s a leak and Henrico Ed over at vcu has it. Plus we’re not in Go mode this off season. But I’ll be ready & the work continues. By the way there r a couple west coasters that r great coaches & have east coast ties. I feel like west coast is overlooked. Geography is not a burden of GK search committee.

19-15 Wofford will hear their name on Selection Sunday 😱
Killer was asking about potential VCU hires. Wofford Coach came up as well. He was a graduate assistant under Shaka when Burgess and Theus were there and they are both on Odom's current staff.

Small sample size I think, but UCSD having huge year. Irvine coach? Yes, be glad to be on the committee but it is a few years away.

Switching gears - what about Roussell - who UR has a very strong chance of losing.

ESPN has an article for the coaching carousel on the women's side and here are some notable jobs that I think he would consider if contacted.

Auburn - lots of money, and SEC is a top women's league. Just made tourney first four last year.
Wisconsin - Big Ten, money will be there. Has not made the tourney in 15 years - so if he likes projects and turnarounds, this could be it.

Expect other jobs to open as well, but one thing that could keep Roussell in Richmond is the lack of other openings.

You'd think they could pull a stronger candidate than someone that was barely above .500 in the SoCon

Agreed. Don't see Wofford coach at all. I mentioned in other thread but if they go Shaka connection gotta be Mike Morrell at UNCA.

Roussell is gone if he wants to move up the coaching ladder. I don't think there is anything we can do to prevent that. But that is the question, is does he like living in RVA with his family, can we give him a bump in salary to keep in happy. But if he wants to go, we can't match P5 money nor the opportunity to coach at that level.

Nice work 23. Very nice. Your place on committee is secure. It will be a glorious day when activated. But we are doing the ever important prep work. and we have to because Hardt is asleep under his desk.

Coach at UCSD is a stud imo. Also had to navigate UCSD into Big West I'd love but he's probably sticking to West Coast and will get a job out there but u take that shot.

Yep Russ Turner. I think he's always wanted to get back East, been rumored for jobs in past. He's a winner. Little bit of tough rep but that's because he demands defense (you'll appreciate) & he got heat from the LBGTQ community and media for a comment after NCAA tourney. Calling a guy Queen when his last name was King. Totally overblown but it did set him back a few years.

Aniother west coast is Chris Gerlufsen at San Fran. Now moving to Richmond would be lateral so who knows how viable. idk how much he makes. but I believ much less than our Moon man. He went to Randy Mac and from Philly, tho the latter could easily be a negative.

This guy has been all over UVA search. Fwiw he has Richey #5. I still like Richey fine but he's not getting UVA. he's more likely at UR than UVA but again, he's also moved down GK list here. he may be outside top 10. I got way better lists than the Augusta Free Press lol.

Also this guy has always struck me as someone who presents himself as more connected than he really is but interesting nonetheless
