Been doing this for quite some , my annual guesstimate on how many minutes guys will play. Extremely tough to find guys minutes this year - even losing Woj Bombs 11 per game. Took one minute/game from Gilly, but that probably won't happen. Gave Grant a couple more minutes/game - Mooney's Load maintenance reduction worked great last year, but Grant is on record wanting to increase his conditioning and I would think minutes. Crabtree coming on, I fully believe he will earn some, and 2nd year Burton will hopefully demand more. Cayo, I reduced by 5, even though he has done nothing but warrant more minutes. Very tough all around. Love all three of the freshman and think all have the ability to be starter level sooner than later in their careers, but this is a very tough year to get minutes.

Here goes:

Player minutes
Blake 30
Gilyard 35
Sherod 28
Grant 28
Cayo 20
Burton 18
Crabtree 12
Wilson 1
Dji 1
Weir 4
Grace 4
Sal 5
Gustavson 14

Still have not seen Crabtree on the court in practice vids. He really needs to see the floor to get back into things.

I think this is pretty close although I think some of Goose’s minutes will go to Wilson. Will be interesting to see who wins the battle of minutes between Grace and Wier behind Golden.

Agree on both accounts - but they will have to really beat out those two and be able to play error free - as Mooney does favor the experience.

Grace has shown an ability to come in and not make mistakes (queue '97's ire here :)), but we see can get physically overwhelmed at times. I think Weir has the ability to compete physically when needed. From what I could tell in the videos and pictures, he looks like he came in well conditioned and that is a great indicator for the future for him.

I'm having a hard time see who's who in the the practice videos, but it looked like Matt, Sal & Goose showed well in the last one.

I’m hoping we are ahead enough in most games that Gilyard is closer to 30-32. Give those minutes to Wilson/Goose.

Also, I think Grace starts the season getting 5-8, but Weir/Sal/Burton take more of his minutes as the season progresses. Grace then becomes more of a garbage time player.

I'm hoping the same thing for Gilyard, but he is definitely Mooney's binky, and understandably so. As I recall, that has been a big topic of discussion on here in the past - concerns over Mooney wearing him out. It sounds really good to give a few of his minutes to Gus/Wilson in order to preserve him, but I will believe it when I see it.

this board worries way to much about Jacob's in-game minutes. I don't remember us so concerned with Kevin Anderson's time.

my only concern is how CM will play Jacob when he's hurt. I know we need him and I know he's tough. I just prefer to get a guy healthy rather than risk delaying the recovery.

Different builds KA vs Gilly. He load manages Golden based on his size.
right. I'm on board load managing a 6'10 255 guy. big guys can get gassed. plus inside guys get in foul trouble.

a 5'9" 160 guy doesn't need his load managed.

I think Gilyard could see a tiny bit less time this year just because we now have a real backup at point guard (who’s not Blake Francis). I wouldn’t be surprised if Mooney gives Wilson a few minutes here and there

Still no Crabtree in highlights, so I'm predicting 0 minutes there until I actually see evidence of him playing. Not knocking him, just want to see proof of life.

yeah, hip surgeries are no joke. would love to hear something about his recovery and where he is with his rehab.

I thought he was cleared from the hip surgery and the latest issue was a groin pull.

I want to argue with this, but I think it is pretty sound. I could see Weir getting some more minutes as the season evolves and I think Wilson will garner more than 1 minute. Sal and Grace have got to perform otherwise their minutes are going to be garbage time minutes only. Sal, in particular. Grace at least has back-up Grant minutes coming his way, but I think Weir will be pushing him for those minutes pretty quickly.

it's only pickup games but Sal, Matt & Andre all look really good in those videos we've been releasing!

Goose is already an established top 7 guy and deservedly so, his intangibles r really good & he's our best on ball defender. If he gets a consistent 3 ball watch out he'd be getting more time. I agree Wilson will get more but don't think at Goose expense. Now it's possible his PT will go down b/c last year numbers were elevated by his 6 starts for injured Francis but really can't see it going that low. For me hard to put Crabtree that high due to injuries and not seeing him but obv he played a lot as freshman at Tulane. The minutes is a good problem to have & if we have anyone new getting into our top 7 without an injury we will be even more of a MONSTER.

it's funny but while I think the talent on this roster goes deeper than it has in a long time, we might actually play fewer people than usual.

our 5 seniors are very good and will play a lot but we're also clearly excited about Burton. for him to get what I think we want him to get, which is about 25 mpg, he's going to have to get pretty much all of the non starter minutes at the 3 and 4 spots. and there's only 3-8 minutes available backing up each of the 1, 2 and 5 spots.

I'll have to re-listen to the interview, but Moon provided some good insights into his philosophy. Indicated that he closely watches Villanova and UVA, how they develop and improve players, without the one and done type talent - though both are obviously recruiting at a very high level. I do think based on moon's lack of confidence in freshman in general, we really need to bring at least one big guy as an immediate transfer next year.

I don't have a problem with that, our top 7 are so good they deserve a lot of minutes. In tight games they'll get them. I think where the decreased minutes for some will come from and in turn go to deeper players on bench is b/c presumably we should win more games this year by higher margins, and allow some additional rest at end of games. We'll see...

Sounds good in theory Gkiller, but doubting many minutes for others vs WVA and Kentucky. I do think we will have a big ol target on our back in A10 play, the downside of the veterans is that they are well scouted. No Obi Toppin, but I think A10 is very solid 1-8 and will be a battle most nights.

Anybody see Crabtree yet? JOC asked Mooney yesterday if he had a full roster and if anybody was out, and Mooney said everybody was good to go, but I still can't pick him out in any videos.

I don't see Crabtree either, spider 3309 reported a groin pull on Sep.10, so 35 days back. Hopefully he is good to go. The thing with this season is, let's say Nick Sherod has to go on quarantine duty for 14 days, it would nice to be able to plug Crabtree in for some of those minutes.

Ah, yep...definitely Crabtree and Bailey standing next to each other. Nice spotting.

game was blue vs red. at least Crabtree was in red. maybe he played.
Dji was in grey.

Hate to break it to y’all but there is some bad news that’s coming out Monday that will change up the minutes quite a bit.

that makes me nervous. Have to assume it is an opt out but I cant see many players opting out. maybe cayo or blake or could be gus due to his foreign status. Just can't see gilyard sherod or grant sitting out this season after how hard they have fought to get here. I also could be wrong and we could end up losing our best player.
