Mens - VCU @ RC - Tuesday 2/25 7pm CBS Sports Network (Red-out I think)

We are not playing man defense. It’s the switching man/matchup zone defense.

It doesn’t work.

Felt bad for Walz the ridiculous amount of times he got in a position where he was chasing guards around the perimeter while White or Tynes were left guarding some big dude in the post.

On the Mooney T - did he make contact with the official? What a dip$h1+ . Missed that as I was watching the VCU player who got hit in the face on the play where a foul wasn’t called.

Lmao. If u can u gotta watch the last question to Moon man in the postgame presser. Some lady asked…u lost 49-90 in first game to vcu and 60-78 in 2nd game, how did u lessen that disparity?

Talk about patronizing question. Her whole tone was…amazing at little ol’ Richmond how did u accomplish such a feat. Holy crap he got an Atta boy coach for cutting 41 to 18…and Mooney took it! This is where we’re at. Any real coach imo would have been we’re not proud to lose by 41 then 18 to our rivals. We’re embarrassed and pissed off. Mooney ho hum. U can’t see that Q&A sequence imo without laughing…or crying.

That's pathetic all around. Pathetic question, pathetic that she said the scores BACKWARDS, pathetic that he was so carefree with his answer, pathetic that he actually answered it as if it were a real question or one whose point merited some cause for positivity.

Ha her saying the score backwards made it much funnier. Pathetic too. But in a funny way. How do u get into that room & say it like that? Who cares made it more classic. I think it’s still because many chicks instinctively don’t get sports. Someone will label me sexist for that but it’s true.

Saying scores backwards would be immediate grounds for expulsion from that setting if I were in charge. Just ridiculous. And not just women who are doing it, I've heard plenty of younger guys doing it these days too. Probably the types who couldn't throw a baseball if their life depended on it.

Couple observations from the game last night.

Building was at best 2/3rd full. I have never seen the RC not a sell out for the VCU game, so to see large swaths of seats empty was jarring. It looked like a mid December game against Belmont. The students did show out which was nice. VCU fans were not overly representative either, it mainly seemed like our fans who attend this game took a pass on the game.

The "Fire Mooney" chant by the students. Have to say, I didn't think the our students either cared or were informed enough to do that. Only did it once in the first half, many of the students left about the 12 minute mark on the 2nd half.

Award recognition for Beck. Other noted, literally couldn't understand a word that was being said because they were playing music during the announcement.

Sponsor recognition: Being at both games, VCU brought the Richmond Honda dealers owners out to mid court before the game, were recognized over the PA with nice accolades for sponsoring the game. It looked like we forgot to do so, as they hurried onto the court literally right before tip for a quick picture, no recognition.

Loudest ovation of the whole night was when the women were recognized. Deserved so.

Post game show: If you would just listened to the postgame show, you would have thought we won. All of the talk centered around the 5 minute run of good basketball in the 2nd half, not the other 35 minutes where VCU was kicking our a**es. We lost by 18 to our rival and somehow we talk about that as some type of win. Mooney, Beck, and Scott were effusive in how much better we are playing now. Can't make this stuff up, these guys live in some weird bubble.

Got the Spider Jolt e-mail today. Zero mention of the biggest game on the year for Richmond athletics the day after the game.

Other than all of that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

Out of curiosity, do you have a sense of how loud the chants were? Could it be heard at the opposite end of the arena or just nearby sections?

Also, the student body and greater community cares more than the average person might think for a school of Richmond's size. Between chants, petitions, the billboard a few years ago, whether right/wrong approach, fans will vocalize their thoughts. People like to downplay our level and mentality as a school, but we are playing high level D1 athletics. It isn't the same kind of pressure at a P5 school, but certainly pressure will exist and be known.

Thought about that too today. Ridiculous. Either we intentionally did not want to include it or, didn't want to update the existing mailing at 9 pm after the game last night. Either way, its amateurish. If they are going to do something like this, then inform us of all the results good or bad. Don't have to add more commentary to it. Just state objectively what happened. Can't take it seriously this way. Only reason I haven't unsubscribed is because it lists all the upcoming sport events at the bottom, which is visually easy to see in one place.

VCU, especially this year - is just better all around in all aspects. An easier way to look at it - would any of our starters for this game - Dusan, B Artis, Tyne, Roche, or Walz either start or get minutes on the current VCU team?

I don't think Roche, B Artis, or Walz get off the bench for VCU. Dusan maybe comes off the bench and gets 10-15 minutes, and I could see Tyne getting the same minutes off the bench because of his speed - but other than that - we have 2 starters, who are our 2 leading scorers now without Hunt - that would be reserves for VCU.

Hunt could play for VCU - but I am not sure he even starts. I don't see him starting over Shulga or Bamisile. I guess he could take over for Russell, but then again - Russell did have a good game last night - 11 points in 24 minutes.

They are just a better team top to bottom, and not that you can't win those games - but it is very difficult when your roster is not close their roster. Could be a glimpse of the future when payments to players kick in, some teams might be able to just buy better players. Sort of like professional sports.

I could write all day about my frustrations with our defensive philosophy. I'm good with some switching. in theory it should actually help to NOT have a 5'10" guard defending the post. but it would require communication and switching back. Walz not staying on a weakside wing guard while a big posts up Tyne, ffs.

but my biggest frustration is our consitent overreliance on help to the point a team can pretty much toy with us and make us chase all over the court. our effort is never the problem. it's the scheme. it looked effortless for VCU to move the ball and get us scrambling. yeah they shot well. because they were usually wide open. meanwhile we're shooting constest 3's at the shot clock buzzer and a ton of midrange runners and jumpers that analytics says to avoid. go to ESPN's shot chart under "gamecast". it looks like this most games.

to me, VCU lost focus in the 2nd half. who could blame them. but they started passing up those open 3's they were taking earlier and it led to some turnovers. our defense wasn't really any better. nobody should be pointing to us making improvements in the 2nd half.

Btw, the students did show up and I thought did a nice job. It’s not going to be a maniacal outpouring when you’re getting slapped around by your rival unfortunately.
It was nice to see a full student section and apparently they also “overflowed” into the corner sections which had unsold seats, which was a good move by UR. Like other games this year though the ranks thinned out quite a bit at the half.

There actually was a decent amount of red, so the Spider faithful did get the word and turned out for the most part, which is at least a little surprising since the season has been terrible. It was sad to see a significant number of empty seats, but at least it wasn’t a yellow takeover. The yellow fans were loud at times, but I think they were somewhat subdued since there wasn’t ever a question on who the victor would be.

Definitely a lowlight for the “rivalry” all around.

The Spiders did play hard, but continued to make the same mistakes on both offense and defense. The only improvement that I have seen that matters for the future is Tyne. He is definitely playing much better now than in the beginning of the year. Roche continued to give his all when in the game being disruptive on D and hitting his usual couple of 3s on low volume. Tanner can definitely shoot, but he has such a long way to go to be an all around player. Seems like the typical “development” project that Mooney seems to recruit. Beagle brought some energy on the offensive end, but overall there wasn’t much happening at the center spot. Continues to look like a team that doesn’t fit the system and we all know there is only one way to play in Mooney land.

The only other positive is the team and media personalities staying upbeat on the possibilities for the rest of the season. It is better than giving up, but I don’t think anyone is buying what they are selling.

Loved the women’s team getting acknowledged for their achievement this year and last. Apparently one team is leveraging the investment in the new practice facility etc. Too bad Mooney isn’t holding up his end of the bargain.

There is some background on it in this game thread. Go back and check out. I was not there but Sec9 said it was very brief. That after a brief scowl from RMC Events...yes just 1 dude from RMC Events...it was quickly squashed. So that's soft as baby shit.

But I'll cut the students some slack. Given the Jaynel crowd performance last season and hey the FireMooney came out in a tiny tiny way.

in response last night I made a joke that if the students just held up a Palestine sign in the stands they could chant and say anything they want. we all have misses and hits but that seemed to hit...however apparently the board said no and deleted it. dang.

but like the board admin....things get squashed immediately by UR...so I think that is context (nuance?) that needs to be added. Chants started, immediately ended. See Pres Cooper stuff at game re: football too. Billboard. Did it even make 24 hours? Gone. External presure by UR. Petition Guy. Same thing. Higher profile tweet? Send TJ Cline to the rescue. so I disagree that it's really made known because its killed. UR PR can't spell but they r pretty good at that stuff.

u r overthinking it Trap. VCU beats us when they have a better roster, they beat when the rosters r relatively even, and they beat us when we have a better roster.

I agree. But I would question - how many times have we really had the "better" roster? I think it has usually been either VCU has been better, or its somewhat even - and when even - we have been losing a lot of those games. But how many times has UR really been better on paper from a roster perspective than VCU?

You are assuming our players would not get better with different coaching/scheme and practicing against better talent everyday. I think you sell our guys short.

That is a way to look at it. I was just looking at this point in time.

Like if before the game started - you could walk over to Ryan Odom and say - you can take any Spider players you want and put them on your team - I don't know if he takes anyone but Tyne and Dusan, and even them - last night, they are coming off the bench, not starting for VCU currently.

by saying "practicing against better talent everyday", you're acknowledging they have more talent!

you don't have to be the better athlete to be the better basketball player, but fact is we're out-athleted at pretty much every position.
and becasue of scheme, we're out-intensitied too.

btw ... Shulga is a better athlete than I gave him credit for. he's good defensively. stays infront of his man without over help or switching.

That is what I saw as well. VCU lost focus, they still had the same wide open looks they had in the first half, they were almost too unselfish.

As for the chant, I had to do a double take to understand it, so no I don't think it was heard/understood throughout the arena. We used to have a couple students who would post on here, I would love to know more about its origin. You don't get something like started organically, in my opinion.

I liked the part where Tyne was guarding Fermin in the paint after we went on our big run and Fermin dunked in his face. That was a great defensive call.
Well if you don't deal with the screens better, you end up with a bad matchup. But let's face it, the way VDU shot the three, did it matter. Maybe giving up two was better than a three. Lee Art U has enough players over 6'3 that allows them to switch if they have to without much pain. I am sorry the days of the short guard without backup height is coming to an end I hope for UR. UT has a very short pg but every one around him has length and quickness.

Yeah - chant was started I think by students 3 or 4 rows behind the Spider-Man kids in the first row - felt like a good chuck of kids shouting - only 15 or so seconds before frown from security or events guy as mentioned last night seemed to end it

No you have not "earned the right" at 9-27 to be considered a good rival. For goodness sake we are sick and tired of your trade line of "we competed". Get angry and upset with losing like the rest of us.

This was apparent to me at both games. Tyne is the only player on our team that looks like he belongs on the same court with VCU.

And no I don't blame NIL. I blame Mooney for making really bad recruiting and portal decisions. We have the least talent in the league in my opinion and the talent disparity with the best team in the league is jarring.

I think Walz could play for them as well, if he abandoned every basketball instinct that he has had forced on him the last 3 years.

I wonder what he could do if he could actually play around the basket?

When was chant, I did not hear it? Did it spread to most students?
