The National College Players Association has proposed holding the NCAA tournament with no crowds in the arenas due to coronavirus fears.

If a shot falls in an empty stadium, does it make a sound?

If this happens it would make for some really strange tv viewing. Imagine no crowd noise, empty stands. I really hope this doesn't happen.

I’ll admit the idea of this thing running rampant with a vaccine is not the most pleasant thought, but most people recover from it, so the panic seems over the top. If you’re old, young or have health issues, take precautions. If you’re not, be smart and careful. I can’t imagine this proposal sees the light of day.

There are about 100 cases out of 350 million people. Get real!! Call me when there are 100k cases. The common flu is about the same as this and there are a million cases at any given time.

Worth mentioning this is currently taking place in Italy for all Serie A matches
Nothing like a government handling an issue with calm and cool. “Don’t panic”!!!! But please dont leave your house or go near another human being. Lol

Italy has also had over 2,500 cases and is closing in on 100 deaths if they haven’t yet reached that. As of a few days ago all but one of their regions had outbreaks. They haven’t been able to contain it and in Italy the biggest “get togethers” are Serie A games which can host up to 75,000 fans. I know Chicago state cancelled a couple games but I’m not sure in program history their total attendance even equals that

Its still hysteria IMO. The common flu has been on epidemic alert since January in Italy with more than .5 million cases reported in a week and 250 deaths. Pretty typical for flu season. Did they think about closing stadiums because of that? Its nuts.

read the first post the source of the consideration was the Players Association -- I don't want to see this happen either

IMHO, I would rather be quarantined with 30,000 screaming fans for 30 days in March, watching the Spiders win the dance.

I’m not a fan of closing NCAA games to fans, but let’s stop comparing covid-19 to the flu. The death rate is 20x higher. More people have died from covid-19 already than SARS and MERS combined during their respective outbreaks.

SARS and MERS were scarier in a sense because of their higher death rates (10% & 34%). However, a virus like H1N1 had a lower death rate (.02%) but killed more people because it spread faster and without containment.

So yes, 2% death rate for Covid-19 doesn’t seem that high, but because it has been rapidly spreading (as everyone who has it doesn’t show symptoms when they are spreading it), it has the chance to affect more people faster and therefore kill more people.

So wash your hands, get tested if you feel sick, and stop diminishing the seriousness of the threat if we simply ignore the virus as many do the flu.

To relate it to this messageboard, while Covid-19 has a much greater efficiency rating (Fatality Rate), InFluenza has more Quad 1 wins (Deaths) because it has more opportunities (more instances)?

Chesterfield County Schools have notified parents that they are planning to shut down schools in Virginia for 2 weeks, if there is an incursion of COVID-19 into the area.

I don't really understand the idea of shutting things down for two weeks. Do people become immune to the virus after they have had it? I don't think so. It's not like chickenpox. So as soon as you reopen everything, odds are people will still have it and still transmit it to others.

Yes - the death rate right now is higher, somewhere between 2-3% depending on what news release you read, but in reality it is lower than that. Reason being is that 80% of the people infected have mild to little or no symptoms. So the death rate can't take into account someone who shows no symptoms or just has a little cough for a week and feels fine.
I agree - this is not comparable to the flu. And it seems older folks are more at risk with younger ages groups fairing just fine so far.

What I've learned about CoVid is most people can't do simple math. Also, those who tend to yell the loudest have done the least reading up on it.

Where did you hear that? It would not surprise but having kids in Chesterfield County schools, I haven't seen anything stating that yet.

I assume the WHO mortality rate calculations have no different limitations here than those of the flu or other viruses. So COVID is substantially more dangerous. there's conflicting information about how transmittable it is but seems very contagious, with the virus living on surfaces up to 9 hours.

You’re comparing apples to walnuts here. The majority of people that die from the flu are people who are incredibly unhealthy or susceptible to any type of sickness, usually unfortunately is young children or the elderly. Coronavirus is not picking certain people out and is killing everybody but mostly healthy middle age adults. Talking about something here that is going on maybe a month and is only spreading to more countries and people and leaving a body count everywhere it hits. “It hasn’t killed as many people as the common flu” is not relevant because this thing in most cases has only been in these countries a week or two and is already racking up this type of death toll. If a week into the new year thousands were dying from the normal flu people would be in a state of panic.

Edit: it is also worth noting how deadly this thing really is. We are seeing in some areas it killing over 10-20% of people that are infected. The common flu does NOT kill people at that rate. Yes right now the flu has killed more people but that is solely due to the amount of people who have had the flu this year. The killing rate of this thing is what people are worrying about.

whoa, I've not read that at all. here in America at least, I believe 100% of the deaths were to elderly or people with underlying conditions. no healthy middle age adults. and no youth either.

Happened to have my annual physical today and my doctor said that coronavirus seems to be something that kids are hardly affected by, and those stats bear it out. That's encouraging. It obviously does seem to be killing a much higher percentage of people than the flu does, but it's still a very low percentage of overall people who get it. I think it's good to be concerned about it and take precautions, but we shouldn't stop living our lives or else the terrorists will win. Or something like that.

lol. I'm not worried about dying from coronavirus.
I'm worried about the global economic impact ... which I believe will be real.

Italians kiss everyone they meet TWICE so, therefore, diseases spread twice as fast in Italy! Lol

My company is US based but about 2/3 of our Global employees are in China. It's been amazing to speak with them about their experiences with this. My head of accounting there has been stuck in her house for 2 months and gets out just once a week to obtain food. We have ~1,000 people that have been working remotely for 2 months now.

My $0.02 based on many first hand accounts, including from those with recent travel to SE Asia. If you're under 60 and healthy, no sweat. That said, I don't believe we're appropriately prepared to contain. For example, in Asia now, every new building you walk into, people are taking your temperature. Upon return to US, no testing at all for a flight full of people coming from Singapore.

Had a meeting with HSBC yesterday and was informed that they are no longer doing face to face meetings in locales with cases. This shutdown will most certainly have lingering economic effects.

No real point, just sharing my info.

Wash your hands and don’t pick your nose and you will be fine.
