Lasalle game thread following Philly post Super Bowl depression ..

Randolph is even less of a PG than Goose.
our PGs are Bailey and Nelson. Nelson was hurt. Bailey had foul trouble. but I hate sitting a guy with foul trouble. rather he fouled out than goes home with 4.

Yeah was going to say the same. Goose is not a pure PG but he's much closer to PG than Randolph. Would never even think to describe Randolph that way.

The foul trouble stuff is so overrated we talked about that b4, it's not as bad as the Mooney kill our own momentum timeout but it's up there. Dji did get 2 in first half but I was surprised to see a starter get only 11 minutes last night. In general Dji does need to watch the fouling though. His fouls per mins played have to be very high in his career. Think mainly a strength issue, when he gets more of that he'll be able to stay on court more without fouling. And I don't want him to lose his defensive intensity that he's shown.

Agree, but only foul trouble in the 1st. He was subbed out at the usual 14 min mark in 2nd. I just thought the lineup out there wasn’t the best lineup against their 5 guards that they went with. DJI hit two tough buckets and got subbed then when I believe him and Zay come in :56 we got a small lift but def not enough. Dji hit both FTs that cut it to 4 I think with about 30 sec left. Just a very tough way to lose and I would have still let Marcus rock. We need that energy but he also has to be better at picking and choosing his excitement/toughness. Yeah the Tech was soft and the refs were horrible in the 1st but I think our guys adjusted to that part in the 2nd but the 5 guard lineup & not figuring it out is what got us in the end.

Dji played well. just not enough. that's a few times now I've seen Dji slip into a turnover though. seemed a few guys slipped in the same area of the floor.

was worth taking a look at it, but I don't like the big lineup (Quinn, Grace, Bigelow, Burton, Goose) as much as I thought I might. we need better shooting. Tyler's lost the rep of a shooter.

I don't like to complain about refs and I'm not some old timer that thinks everybody walks all the time, but there had to be at least 4 times last night where I thought LaSalle guys either shuffled or changed their pivot foot or jab-stepped with one foot and then led with the other before the dribble. don't think one travel was called all game.

no shoes offer ankle support. high top support is a myth. need trainer to wrap or wear a brace.
I am a tennis player and all I know is there are shoes that offer lateral support and ones that don’t. If I don’t have lateral support then I have a better chance of rolling my ankle. I am not talking about high tops although that is the type of shoe that was used when I played in my younger years. Maybe the shoes are fine, but still seems suspicious to me.

Mooney's stellar .556 career winning percentage is in jeopardy. He is going to have to have to get them going if they are going to reach the mark this year.

But, don't worry, all is well. A team that loses their star, 3-starters, and is guaranteed to have Mooney back, well - next year is likely be worse.

Uh, maybe now isn't a good time to talk about that.
Looking like .40625 to me.

I don’t understand this quote at all given the timeout that was called after we took the lead by 4 ...from game writeup on Richmond site

"If you're going to close out a game, you need every possession. It's so important. You can't have turnovers that turn right into points," said Richmond Head Coach Chris Mooney. "We got that four-point lead with I think maybe 4:50 left, and I just thought we could play until the next media and give ourselves a good chance and unfortunately that wasn't the case.

minor point, but it didn't all fall apart right after the 4:53 timeout. we were still up 3 at 3:00 when we gave up a layup. lost the lead for good at 2:42 after Tyler's turnover.

I saw that too and didn't get it. His timeout turned into the TV/media timeout. But he called it early at 4:53 after a made bucket by us. Normally it would first stoppage under 4 mins. Why not just play to that given our momentum. So of course it doesn't explain his reasoning for taking it then. I figured that was last media timeout of the game. Play by play does show one at 1:48 but idk if that is an error and was an actual TO taken by a coach.

yeah pretty sure the 1:48 TV timeout was just the 1st deadball after 4 minutes after the 4:53 Mooney timeout when we all basically knew what was going to happen

No it pretty much did. It was 12-2 lasalle over the next 4 and half mins. Tyler did have a couple bad turnovers.

A called timeout should become a media timeout only if it's less than 30 seconds until the media marker. So 4:53 should be Mooney's called timeout and then 1:48 would have been the media. Not sure why the box score records 4:53 as also a media.

I can't help but think of big extended family holiday meals when my mom or dad would ask "who wants to go first?"....on John Hardt's Regatta women & children do not get saved first.

Thx. I knew there had to be some time requirement to convert but I thought it could be a minute. If that did not count as media timeout the Mooney comment makes even less sense. Because the next stoppage could theoretically be at 3:59 in less than a minute.

LaSalle nothing special/pedestrian team. Wait till next week with much better competition - St L and VCU. Scheduled not much our friend. Disappointing game but not surprising.

If you played tennis in high tops then you are as old as I am...

I saw one really really bad walk by one of the smaller La Salle guards. He took a hop to shoot, Quinn or someone challenged, and he came down and then went up again. No call.

Yep, and I feel bad for him. He came back and he says all the right things, and seems like a great guy. Maybe he just has to try to do too much, and he is taking too many hits driving to the basket, but he is struggling. Loses the ball, and yes his shot is not good right now. Take a big step/wind up into the shot. Too much movement. All the things he seemed to need to work on to get drafted, don't see too much improvement. He had trouble staying in front of the quick LaSalle guards. Hopefully can finish the year strong.

There is so much weight on Tyler's shoulders right now because we lack good offensive threats. He is being asked to shoot more (and his shots are often closely guarded, drive frequently through contact because he is essentially our only true offensive threat. And then on top of that, he is also is our best rebounder, is asked to bring the ball up sometimes and plays nearly all 40 minutes. Teams can center their game plan around him, knowing that if they slow him down, we really don't have anyone else who can beat them consistently.

Really tough to succeed when you are being asked to do pretty much everything on the court. Could he play better at times, sure, but other guys have to step up much more than they have.

this was my really big question heading into the season was how he would fare being public enemy number 1 on the opposition's game plan. Difficult for anyone to succeed in that position with an absence of other threats to punish when you zero in on one guy.

yeah, that "big step/wind up". his landing spot on some long open 3's seems really far forward from where he takes off. further than any shooter I've seen.

he uses a very hard push off his right leg and really has to step into his 3s, not really a flatfooted catch, pivot and shoot player at all.

I was at the game. A tough, tough loss. Team played reasonably well in the first half, when there seemed to a concerted effort to feed Neil on the blocks. We went through horrendous second half scoring droughts, where we chucked up ugly looking 3s. Neil spent way too much time beyond the 3 point line in the 2nd half.

On a positive note, I met and enjoyed chatting with Mike Walz's lovely parents. My brother and I enjoyed cheesesteaks at the "Explorer's Den" before the game. Tom Gola arena is small, but I could see it being a fun atmosphere if LaSalle gets good under Dunphy.

Is there still a water fountain at the baseline?

I did not see that. I got tickets directly behind the UR bench and while it was nice to sit with other UR folks, that side of the arena does not have chair backs. This 43-year-old back did not really enjoy the bleacher style seating for 2 plus hours!
