Keith Gill Apology Thread

I would guess that at least 90% of what was posted was our unsupported opinions or just "crap" as Spinner says. I hope that I have gained a better appreciation of recognizing such posts for what they are, but I know that I have gained something much more important, and that is a much higher regard for Dr. Crutcher and his vision for athletics. He is a good man and he steps up when he has to. I believe that we have made the best choice for our replacement who I believe will keep us as a top 10 team and may well guide us to another National Championship, and I believe that Dr. Crutcher is primarily responsible for persuading RH to join our program.

As to Keith Gill, I was one of the first to note that the whole thing might not be on him as most had thought. Most of the posters on this board prematurely jumped to the conclusion that it was not just the athletic department at fault, but Keith Gill was the sole culprit. Most have come around to see things more objectively and that the primary reason that DR left was not because primarily because of any action or inaction on Gill's part. However, some, particularly some who claim to have inside information, have not changed from their position. In most cases, I question the basis of knowledge supporting the validity of their claim, but time will tell us more.

For Keith Gill, another or better test seems imminent in the next few years in light of the probability that he with have to deal with the Coach Mooney situation if Coach Mooney does not get the BB program back to where we all want it to be. While I am a Mooney supporter and hope he turns things around, I am no longer in the majority on this board, so there is good reason to believe that there may be a truer test of Gill's ability in the near future, and test upon which we can give him a fairer grade. Coach Shafer may be an even sooner test.

As far as an apology or giving Gill a pass on the Rocco Fiasco, "Nope, not doin' it!"

Objection, your honor. Assumes facts not in evidence.

A few posters on this board blamed Gill 100%. Certainly not most. Heck, our resident Hokie (no longer a Spider supporter, now a declared Blue Hens fan) blamed him 150%, but that doesn't mean you can take that extra 50% and parse it out to other posters.

Clearly the relationship between the two went off the rails at some point and Rocco decided he'd rather work for Rawak than Gill. People decide all the time they don't like working for their boss and the grass is greener landscape is better elsewhere. Gill is certainly not blameless in this, and neither is Rocco. Maybe no one is to "blame."

It certainly seems to this poster that Huesman handled his exit with more grace and class than Rocco. But that's purely an outside observation.

I don't believe we're going to see many key transfers. However, I have noticed that Kyle and several other players who expressed their displeasure through social media have not sent out "welcome Huesman" retweets or updates. That's a little concerning. Clearly, some players do believe Gill (or "the Administration") is the sole culprit. That should concern most of us.

I am not sure how it would play out in a court of law, but I think that the word "most" means more than 50% to most on this board, and I think the count of those who were in that camp well exceeded that percentage. I went back and counted.
I also think that it is safe to suggest that blaming Gill without the mention of any other person or entity would be taken to mean to hold him "solely" accountable. That may be up for debate.

There were players pissed when Clawson left. There were players pissed when London left. Hell there were players and students pissed when Latrell left. Hence we do have some pissed players behind Rocco leaving.

Players signed to play and go to school at UR not under a coach. I hate always attempting to be the voice of reason here but to the players that are not happy take it from us seniors. It is far better to be pissed off than pissed on.

pa I agree, we now have a coach that chose to leave his alma mater so he could coach our current player, at our school. He knows he's got something special here, all the players and recruit need to stay on board and enjoy the ride.

Part of any new coaches first duties is damage control as pertains to existing players and recruits. Nearly any coaching change is going to create some angry 18-22 year olds. Huesman of course knows this. If he handles them half as deftly as he handled his exit from Chattanooga the potential damage of transfers and recruits will be minimal.

What concerns me now is that so many of our fan base don't understand that we still have a problem.if changes aren't made we are going to pay a price that won't make us happy. we did end up with an excellent replacement for DR. Rumors on how this took place are interesting.

all of these coaching deals could be a reality tv series, completely out of hand, silly and funny. chances are, we will never no all the details and that is probably good, none of our business. just think if the head of our chemistry dept departed to go to drexel, would it be as exciting? would anyone, other than the ULLA, really care?

Everyone knows that RS can't be expanded because of City of Richmond ordinances. I doubt a bigger stadium was realistically high on the DR wish list. We will likely never know what DR was asking for, but I doubt he asked for anything that was outside the realm of the possible.
He didn't want a bigger stadium. He did want us to fill up the one we have for games other than JMU. Wha he wanted were better training facilities, more competitive salaries for assistant coaches, and a little friendlier eye in admissions to get in a few more kids that our competitors get in. We lost a RB a few years ago to JMU that especially disappointed him (just one example). Personally I felt his demands were reasonable. He wasn't asking for a big raise for himself. Heck, he is going to Delaware for not much more money as evidence of that. He simply wanted resources that would help him take Richmond to a level of play that we saw this year but only an every year basis. Richmond is in a unique position. The university has a chance to be really great in athletics. Try to look at it through the eyes of a recruit. If Richmond took that last step I really believe the Spiders could dominate.

Look at what the university offers in the eyes of a recruit. Great campus, absolutely beautiful. Great degree. Small classes, better learning environment. Great professors and not many grad assistant teaching. A grad school formthose few that can capitalize. Nice city. Good climate. Good conference and competition. The only place we don't match up with the top FCS programs is facilities and especially the weightroom. I truly believe Richmond could dominate. Just take the last step.

I'm still a Spider fan but I'm just going to support UD now too. As far as Gill yes this is his fault and losing Rocco is going to come back to bite us really bad. I think Huesman is a great coach but I don't think it's an upgrade. It's a downgrade for sure. Coach Rocco is the best coach in the CAA and this whole thing never should've happened. I agree with you about the players, it's not good that they don't seem excited about Huesman. I think they're still in shock that Rocco is gone but I wouldn't be surprised if a few do follow him to UD. If it were me I would leave with him.

There's no reason we shouldn't have these facilities. Most local private high schools and some public have better facilities than us. We obviously have the money and should be using it to have state of the art FCS football facilities. Obviously it's a leadership issue, them not wanting to spend on football and for that reason I completely get why Rocco left.

The admissions thing is absurd. I know I've said it before but this school needs to chill with the crazy high admissions standards. How can someone like me being a son of an alumni and having solid high school grades not even have a chance at going to UR? We can't even look at recruits unless they have a 3.0 and it's amazing that we are as good as we are with those standards. Also what RB did we lose to jmu? Don't tell me it was Abdullah or Cardon Johnson or Sharp.

i thought you already typed your last post, quit it
I'm not abandoning the Spiders, Idk why you think I am. This coaching mess has been tough on everyone and hopefully we com out of it in good shape. Im guessing you have moved on from Rocco and maybe it's time for me to move forward with Huesman now as well.

Thought I worked pretty hard. Apparently a 3.4 GPA in high school isn't that good.

I had strong SATs and a 3.7, if I remember correctly. Plus a variety of extracurriculars before they were overdone, I think.

VT - spider - part of life is moving on when there is no other option. Rocco is gone, Huesman is now the coach. Dick Tarrant, great Richmond basketball coach, said, if life was fair there wouldn't be cerebral palsy wards and there wouldn't be war veterans. Sorry you didn't get accepted to Richmond because you had your heart set on it but you have no other choice than to move on. Be thankful for what you do have. Glad you have a passion for Spiders sports!

I'm really not that upset about not being at UR. Tech is awesome and I love it but my only regret is that I'm not playing football for UR. I would kill for that. I could've been a 5 star recruit with offers from everywhere and I still would've gone to Richmond, it would be an easy decision.

It's still going to be hard to move on from Rocco though and it's going to take until Huesman wins a lot.

Here are just a few examples, of which there are many.
I am done supporting this program if we lose Rocco.
I'll root for UD and I don't know what I'm gonna do when they play UR but it's gonna be hard for me to not support Rocco.
Like I said before boo gill and start the Danny Rocco chant. I'm home from school for winter break so I'll be there. Hopefully we introduce our new head coach during a timeout at the game and we can start a Danny Rocco chant during that.
