2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponents Countdown - Campbell

Gutsy road win on a day when lots went wrong. Huge turnover on downs by our defense after we threw the late int and then the offense marched down the field to ice it. Lots of teams would have lost that game. With URI losing today we now control our own destiny in conference play. One game at a time. Go spiders!

This was a very gritty, in your face win. Honestly Camels looked better. Worried about our depth on both sides
This time of year we can start getting worn down. Cam timing was little off on some TD passes. I will take it as an off
day for us but we still found a way to win.

Goal was 1-0 this week. Achieved.

Not our prettiest game by far, but reached down deep on O and D and found a way in second half. Characteristic of a very good team, possibly a championship team, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Two worthy opponents follow.

1-0 next week. Go Spiders!

Reviewing stats. Penalties really hurt the Camels, 7 for 81 yds vs our 2 for 20. Believe most of this was from a 3-6 team coming in disgruntled and foaming at the mouth to make a statement against a ranked team at home.

Russ normally has a disciplined team when it comes to penalties and penalties were certainly a factor today. Enjoyed 30 yards alone on one of our TD drives.

Camels program on the rise. Like their coach. Better day ahead. They played with heart. Great game....and, of course, the correct outcome!

Richmond 27, Campbell 24
Box Score

Brandon Peskin kicked a game-winning 36-yard field goal with one second to play as Richmond (8-2, 6-0 CAA) took over sole possession of first place in the CAA with a 27-24 victory at Campbell (3-7, 1-5 CAA).

Campbell built a 17-7 halftime lead behind a 90-yard kickoff return for a TD by Randall King and a 40-yard Connor Lytton field goal. The Spiders pulled even in the third quarter on a 1-yard scoring run from Zach Palmer-Smith and a 36-yard Peskin field goal. The Camels went back on top as Sincere Brown caught a 14-yard TD pass from Mike Chandler II with 9:59 remaining, but Richmond responded with a 76-yard drive and tied the game on a 9-yard TD pass from Cam Coleman to Ja’Vion Griffin. The Spiders’ defense was able to make a 4th-down stop with 1:56 to go, and then drove into position for Peskin’s game-winning kick. Coleman passed for 252 yards and 2 TD’s and added 55 yards on the ground, while Matthew Traynor led the Spiders’ defense with 12 tackles, 2.0 TFL’s and an interception. For Campbell, Chandler passed for 128 yards and a TD and ran for 121 yards and a TD.

I would say Campbell scouted us well. They took away our run game and forced our QB to beat us. They also wore down our defense with their running game. We had trouble stopping their duel threat QB, until we did. The QB, Chandler, reminded me of the App State QB who gave us fits in 2007 and 2008. I believe his name was Armanti Edwards.

Campbell was every bit our equal today. Campbell and Hampton will be a force in the CAA.

Huesman needs to understand that he should not try to turn Coleman into a running QB. He will only get hurt. Huesman is only happy if his QB is a bruising running QB, like Wickersham.
