JMU to the Sun Belt?

If they're going to jump up, this is their chance to do it.

Best of luck JMU - neither option seems all that appealing to me but I guess they’ll enjoy Wednesday night football with the reward for a great season a mid-December bowl game.

Well we very well may never beat them again as a conference rival. If you had told me that in 2015 I wouldn’t have believed you.

The Sun Belt is much better than CUSA at this point, so they might as well take the offer if they want to move up.

As much as I don’t love lower level FBS football. I do think that JMU in a conference with Marshal, Appy St, ODU and Liberty is a really good fit for them. Would think they’ll be happy and never look back.

I am ok with our Spiders playing FBS VT and UVA. Not so with FBS Dillweeds and ODU.

Why not? If they pay us the same money it’s a short bus ride and a better chance at a win.

JMU definitely won't be ponying up that kind of dough for awhile for a buy game. It'll take a few years of selling 45k tickets and winning to be able to afford that.

So if JMU raises the student activities fee $28.50 then it's doable? Wonder how much more of this move will the students be funding?
Actually…they may have to cut the student fees. There’s a limit as to how much can come from student fees and it’s a smaller percentage if you’re FBS vs FCS.

I think this is about the best the Dukebags can ask for so they should jump. They’ll never be in a p5 conference, may as well jump and pay more (and lose more) to be in no man’s land to play the same schools you did while in FCS essentially.

Ole Tmac passed a bill (along w Kirk Cox so it was bi partisan) where JMU has to lower its student fee percentage with regards to funding its athletic department. Will be interesting if they can keep up with expenses while their main source of revenue for the athletic department is being curtailed.

If I were a Dukebag I would want to be making this jump with Houston at the helm rather than Cignetti.

Looks like now their best hope is C-USA. A total trainwreck of a league. Thanks Texas and Oklahoma!

Does anyone wonder why relatively young programs (Liberty, ODU, and JMU) move on, and up. We don’t move at all.
Being one of the oldest programs in the state, it seems we should be more.

We have tried before after Joe Pa and co forced our hand down to FCS (Older heads can attest to this better than myself so please correct any inaccuracies)

I knew a former prominent figure all of us would know on here told me of a time we were to join the big east(football only) had we made the necessary upgrades admission would merely be a formality in the late 90s. A 30 million dollar renovation of city stadium to 40k being the primary obstacle. A meeting was called on the feasibility of it including Dr. Cooper and another prominent former board member and Cooper seemed to give the go ahead to get the money for it, only to renege later. The rest is history. At the time the BCS had been created and offers were on the table for all the BE Basketball schools Nova, GT, St. John's to move up. Instead we decided to reduce scholarships for a number of years before we restored them all.

Once we moved on campus any pipe dream of returning to FBS was killed with a 8k person stadium. Until they remove the archaic stadium size/attendance requirement we will always be FCS or "2nd level"

Leadership isn't capable of thinking we can have the best of both worlds with great athletics and academics.

I’ve heard various versions of that same event with slightly different reasons why it fell apart. Who knows, perhaps all are true. But I did hear it was very close to happening.

we then tried again right around 2000 with the Bandy Field purchase that collapsed at the last minute.

We can’t beat Stoney Brook.

Southern Miss holding a press conference tomorrow afternoon to announce their move, so it looks like Sun Belt is going to come out on top.

It looks like the General Assembly has to approve JMU`s move to the FBS.

Virginia bylaw HB1897 requires any four-year public institution seeking change to the division of level – including FCS to FBS – for any of its sports programs to earn state approval. JMU, of course, has to get approval from its own Board of Visitors first ahead of presenting to the General Assembly.

Once given approval from the General Assembly, JMU would be in a position to accept an invitation from the Sun Belt and elevate from FCS status to FBS status.

Have any other FCS teams been invited to FBS conferences yet?

I assume no where for NDSU to go yet?

Mountain West was supposedly talking about inviting NDSU when it looked like Air Force and Colorado State were leaving last month, but that fell by the wayside. Haven't seen specific rumors about any other FCS programs.

Yikes. Seems a little heavy.

Are fans allowed to throw streamers after scoring at the FBS level? If not, the Dillweeds may opt not to move up.

Davidson and Duquesne... Both seem to be a little more interested in football lately, though I know that's all relative to their situations. But the Dukes actually showed nicely a few years ago in the playoffs and have been there more often than us since 2015.
