Hamlin

He picked it up at the post office? Obviously, the authorities knew the package contained drugs and were waiting for him. Three pounds is a lot.

Not a good look. At least he's not a member of the team or student anymore. Shame that he wasted those opportunities this way. I hope others take note.

painting with a broad brush here but drugs are rampant on almost any campus and athletes do use and if you use, sometimes you deal. most pot smoking scholarship athletes need to enroll at the colorado school of mines. have spoken with a few individuals in the know who indicate that it is a huge problem with college athletes.

You don't buy that much weed to smoke it, assume he'll be spending some time in the city jail and threw away a free education.

Very, very sad. Hope it works out as a lesson learned. He is a young man with a long life to live. OSC

Very sad, he was a promising player, and was on track to acquire a quality education. Hope he learns from the experience.

What a fool. I hope he straightens himself out. I assume he is way over the intent to distribute limits.

He was crazy. He would have been the #1 back at Richmond next year, because we are losing both Fisher and Green.

Somewhere out there is a high school senior RB that just got a scholarship offer from this gap in our program. And a chance to play as a true freshman. Hope it's not lost on him why the opportunity exists. Sadly - next man up.

I hope Hamlin is able to turn it around and can find a road to redemption story. Big mistakes will make his life much less pleasant for awhile. Still a young guy so hopefully he can bounce back, earn a second chance somewhere, and take advantage of it.

Why is he not facing Federal charges? One is not supposed to use the interstate mail system to ship illegal drugs. Also, the last time I heard, possession and distribution of this substance is against Federal law.

Some of our posters seem really familiar with the penalties.Too much watching SVU or personal experience.Or watching too many soap operas .Conjecture about Hamiln won't help us beat anyone or help us recruit a suitable replacement.

Arrested by UR police at the campus post office. Amazing.

I guess conjecture is "vital".

well svu is a sex crimes unit not a drug unit but who really cares. is this what they used to call "going postal"?

3 pounds, federal offense, his a$$ is cooked. Hope he wasn't getting it to distribute to teammates

that has to be considered along with a ton of other UR students. he was in a target-rich (no pun intended) environment. if only bernie was the prez now.......

Saw this coming, I know someone who works in the campus mail facility, got all the details last week. What he did was really dumb, and he will be paying for it for the rest of his life

Different take. Possibly, and it appears almost surely, based on what we know, this is a serious mistake in judgment by a young man, but Mr. Hamlin has not been convicted of anything. What happened to due process? Of being judged by a jury of your peers based on the evidence presented? Of fundamental concepts of jurisprudence?

I agree he is most likely guilty based on what we know today. I agree he should be suspended from the team. I disagree that he should have been tossed out of school. He is in enough trouble, his trial will not be until after the end of this semester which, IMO, he should have been allowed to finish. Punishment should ocur after conviction, not before.

You can be thrown out of school without due process (administrative process or legal process). Whether he is found guilty or not, he did something dumb that will negatively impact his future.

If he is found guilty, he will almost certainly do some time.

Punishment should occur after conviction not before. English law. Did I miss something?

1st time offense -- may be a major factor -- I cannot believe we would have admitted him if he had a record

People talk about constitutional rights all the time. What they don't understand is that freedom of speech allows you to speak your mind without fear of criminal punishment (short of yelling "fire" in a crowded theater). A constitutional right to freedom of speech does not protect you from losing your job for saying something stupid.

My understanding is that enrollment at a private school is like a "work at will" employment agreement. There are any number of transgressions that can get you tossed out of school without any due process.

really feel for Jeremiah, his life as he knew it is over, at least for a time. will say if this were a he said, she said, type of deal, would agree you don't toss him until all the facts are known. in this instance where he is picking the package up, probably with his name on it, even if he gets no time, he gets tossed, pretty simple. of course some buddy in fl could have sent this to him without telling him, he is just picking up his mail and if his attorney, would be the way i would go, he gets off.

Per this RTD article wording: the withdrawal from school of sophomore Jeremiah Hamlin, who is facing a marijuana distribution charge.

Withdrawal is not a compulsory act but one based on free will. Most people would connect the act of withdrawal to the thinking that was the best course of action based on the circumstances, How much he was "encouraged to withdraw by the school" is conjecture.

Good analysis, spinner. Hope he gets his life straight. OSC

I personally think marijuana should be legal, but it's not and having 3 pounds delivered in the mail is just unbelievably stupid. I'm sorry I can't feel bad for being that dumb.

He will have his day in court, I don't expect it to go well for him.

Have known a few who got into trouble while at UR. One of the options given offenders is the option to withdraw "voluntarily" rather than being tossed out. Kinda like being given the option to resign from a job rather than being fired, more a matter of semantics.

Yeah some buddy doesn't send $10,000 worth of weed in the mail as some kind of joke. This has got to be a distraction to the team, especially if he was popular among his teammates (I'm guessing that if he was providing the party favors, he was very popular). From the football standpoint this was lousy timing, with Fisher being out and Green pretty banged up. Gordon Collins has to step up and fill shoes.
