GW game almost sold out

If we can knock off GW (who lost to Davidson last night at home?) we can move into the top half of the conference standings.

They are selling student section tickets to the general public for this game, so hopefully we won't have a big gaping hole in end zone for this sold out game. Smart move by the ticket office.

97. That is a great idea. Hate to see it sold out with only 6000 people there

Perhaps an ignorant question:

Does our coaching staff do anything to try to encourage kids to get out to games? Show up at D Hall and grab a microphone, etc?

It's common sense. In my experience, you rarely get what you don't ask for.

Again, maybe Mooney does this already. I just don't know.

That is a good idea Mo. There are other things, like there are many dance studios and cheerleading businesses in the Richmond area. Have a dance off or cheerleading competition at halftime to get many kids and their parents in. Also maybe invite an entire high school band a couple times of year. Get some young energy in the building on those week night games.

I don't disagree but I'm referring specifically to the UR Student Body. Is there a call to action from our staff?

I remember Beilein writing emails and showing up at D Hall and grabbing a mic when I was in school.

Challenge the students. "We need your support".

Gotcha ! Yes it sure wouldn't hurt. It would be great to get at least 500 there. The crowd seems to feed off the students in all arenas. Make a huge difference having a loud crowd. Helps the players and probably helps with the refs too.

Glad to hear they're selling student section seats. Could care less what they charge for 'em, just fill the darn things. Only game I'll miss this year. Definitely report how it all plays out with them doing this. Will be interested to hear. And red out should be pretty cool.

As for our marketing, just don't get why we don't get some "out of the box" and more creative promotions and ideas. Students in B-School could do better. In fact, more ideas laid out on this board over the past year have been tried than anything new from the Athletic Dept. as far as I can tell. Maybe one of those paid internships should be for a Marketing student to come up with some new branding and a genius marketing plan for next year's FB and BB seasons. Certainly couldn't hurt.

Coach T used to make the rounds with the students to encourage their attendance

MidloTrader - agree regarding a B-School student coming up with a marketing plan.

I just attended a presentation tonight with the CEO of Cisco. He mentioned that, prior to the presentation, he sat for an hour answering questions for about 16-20 B-School students. He commented that the questions they asked him were better than the questions that Cisco employees ask him. We have bright students at the B-School. An internship/assignment sounds appropriate - it is also a good example of thinking outside the box. Bravo.

I remember my freshman year at a football game, I was wearing a Richmond basketball t-shirt and Dick Tarrant was walking the other direction and went out of his way to stop and tell me he liked my shirt. Really liked that guy.

23, I went to high school with Mr. Tarrant's daughter and got to meet him a few times. Always very engaging with a good sense of humor. Wished he had coached another 10 years.

I'll buy a few tickets in the student section if they come with free food in that pregame tent.

Agreed. I've always thought they should have some sort of contest among b school about a marketing concept and let the kids run with it. I think it's a great way to get fresh ideas

I've gotten the notice aout the 'red out' Saturday (I hope, for once we get a lot of participation) I've got plenty of red UR shirts, but for us older folks it's hard to match a red sweater with a red shirt. There really are lots of shades of red.......................Hey there may be a book in there somewhere.

Love that the A10 went to 18 games this year. Got all our local rivals GW, VCU, GMU, Davidson to visit and 3 of em are sellouts and that's not including the Rhode Island game. Not too shabby of a home slate.

I Am UR. My understanding is that they are giving out red tshirts at the game. When I went to the vcu game, they had a black out and had put an extra large t shirt on every seat in the building.

They need to change the size of the t-shirts in the t-shirt toss. Those shirts are for toddlers

and I thought the shades of red comment was clever.......but all we can talk about is free t-shirts................ Oh well.

VCU game students tickets sold out in 12 minutes. Not sure how many for GW but to answer Mos question, students get an email maybe once a year but no major push. Mostly on the Rowdies to inform people.

And there will be a TIFO for the GW game

That is sad if true. I know the AD has pushed a punch of incentives from the pre-game tent with free food, games and entertainment to get students to come to the game. Feel it is the one of the responsibilities of the coaching staff to do outreach to the student body and establish some more personal connections with student leaders, organizations, etc.. to develop more support from the hoops team.

We have 87 suits on the bench each game now, you think one of them could devote some time from his schedule to develop a plan to be more interactive.

Young(er) people in Richmond love food trucks and beer. Maybe use that tent for the students that aren't coming to a mid-week game for a young(er) person beer and food pre-game event?

What's a TIFO?

I believe that generating enthusiasm among the student's is a part of the Head Coach job. It's disappointing to hear that we aren't doing more.

Surely, there are some places like Kansas and Kentucky where the results and tradition speak for itself and students show up and root hard without any prodding. We aren't Kansas or Kentucky.

You should know this

I don't think it's the coach's job to rally the troops to get out to a game. I don't recall Tarrant ever doing this during my time at UR, and the student section was packed.

I'd go old school...get the fraternities to "recommend" that their pledges go save seats, and then encourage the brothers to show up. Maybe they are still doing that, but it was very effective in my day.

It seems absurd to me in general that we should have to lure students to come support their own teams. Crazytown.

It's not the coach's job to lure students. It's the coach's job to win games.

Having more loud and rowdy students there will help the team win.

Why does Coach K take pizzas to kids camping outside or Bill Self ride a motorcycle at Midnight Madness ... or Mike Lonergan Hula Dance in Hawaii?

Anyone have insight as to weather conditions in Richmond tomorrow?

Snow changing to sleet, changing to rain. Ride down might be a bit sketchy for you Ulla, but the way back it should be all rain that time. Less than an inch accumulation in Richmond, so not a big deal. Of course, the forecast could change between now and then.

97 is right. Sat will be warmer (high of 36) with wintry mix of up to 1" starting in afternoon but will change to rain in evening and should still be above freezing. Right now anything above 30 degrees will feel like a scorcher . . .

We open -3.5.
I'm kind of shocked at this line. We took GW to OT at their place (and we all know how bad we suck on the road) and since then GW has completely fallen apart and meanwhile we are still pretty tough at home.

I think it's reasonable. They're basically saying we're even on a neutral court right now. GW has been a very bad matchup for us with the way the length of their 1-3-1 pushes our small guards further out.

We got very hot from 3 during the 2h in Foggy Bottom or we would have lost by double digits.

Sorry, I misread it. I thought we were 3.5 point dogs in the game. Much like the St. Bonnie game, I feel this game is pretty critical (aren't they all). If we can get the win, I like our chances against VCU on Wednesday and also against St. Joes and St. Louis (I don't see us beating Umass in their building).

Likewise, if we lose, still feeling like the bottom could drop out like it did last year. Wish we had ANO back.
