Gilly professional

I expect he will have every opportunity to play in Europe if nothing works out in the US. You can make a lot of money and have a nice life playing in Italy or Spain.

He should take his professional shot, and then will have many options later. Smart young man.

I can see Gilly playing in the NBA. He wont score much but he will ball handle and be an assist machine. Mugsy Bogues style.

NBA will be a long shot for him. His size is the main reason, but he also doesn't have elite speed to make up for it. He may get a shot on an NBA roster for summer league and could probably play in the G-League, but I think if making money is the goal for him - overseas might be best. Then he can come by an coach.

Remember - its not so much can he play in the NBA, but will someone give him a shot. The other downside he has is his age. He is 23 and soon to be 24. Might not seem old, but the NBA much rather take a guy who is a frosh/soph and is only 18-19 years old. They value size, athleticism, and potential more than anything. There is a reason the first round of draft picks is filled with underclassmen and hardly any Juniors or Seniors anymore. So the NBA will unfortunately look at Gilyard and see someone without size, average athleticism for NBA standards, and probably little to no potential left in the tank. I am not saying I agree with this - just saying this is how the NBA works.

offensively he could play in the NBA. he'd have to bulk up a ton to handle the size/strength in the NBA defensively, and even then his size is a major problem.

some people don't even think Timme will get drafted. that seems crazy. but the NBA is a different sport. you really need to be a phyiscal mutant to play in that league.

Timme is a good example. He is listed at 6-10 and 235. Which if true - he is a PF or wing in the NBA. Problem is - he is not super quick, so he can't guard on the perimeter, where is pretty much where everyone plays in the NBA now. He also doesn't shoot the 3 well enough yet - but probably something he can become (an average shooter) in the NBA after a few years. Timme reminds me a little bit of Draymond Green. He is pretty good at about everything and hustles, but is not elite at any one thing. He could be a good role player on the right team. But in college - he is a star for the title favorite.

NBA is all about size and athleticism first. If you got size and are super athletic, they figure they can teach you the rest or worse case scenario - you become a guy who just runs the floor, grabs rebounds, dunks, etc - and even just with that you can get 10-15 points night. But the big thing is potential. The younger you are, the more raw you are - the better they like you. They like the less skilled Frosh over the polished Sr. because the ceiling is higher for that frosh.

The issues seen in the Providence game playing against big guards is probably a good barometer of whether he can play in the NBA. But even not playing in the NBA, he's going to play pro somewhere and make a pretty good living.

I don't see any way Gilly plays in the NBA. The few guys 5'9 and shorter who have played in the NBA have been elite playmakers and shooters. Gilly is super quick but his shot is just OK. If he was one of the top 3 point shooters in the NCAA maybe. Plus, there is no way to hide Gilly on defense. NBA guards will simply shoot over him. Gilly will make a lot of money oversees though.

You know after this season, starting back with the NIT I would never count Gilly out.
He reminds me of a handicapped friend who has a leg 6 inches shorter than the other one
and has been told all his life he cannot play in all kinds of sports. He is 4 handicapper in golf, played
baseball and soccer. Don’t challenge him or tell him he cannot do something, you will be surprised at
his success. Jake is a winner

then maybe we SHOULD challenge him and tell him he cannot do something!
