Sherod has explicitly said his college basketball career is over.

The ONLY way I see the 5th year guys coming back would be if we continue to climb the rankings, winning all our games except WVU (or even knocking off WVU)....and then Dr. Osterholm gets his 3 week hard lockdown, which cancels everything. If this team believes it is the best UR's ever had.....Gilly will be so sour that he will convince the band to get back together for one more run.

IOW, highly unlikely.

Nick was pretty noncommittal when he was asked that question in Noah's podcast right after the Kentucky game.
They've been doing a good job with these, love hearing Nick's perspective. The Goodman one was also a good listen.

I think Nick is tired of being asked the question and in addition doesn’t want to distract from the current season. The easiest answer is the kick the can down the road answer. A number of the seniors had said the same thing.

There's no assuming...the NCAA already granted an extra year at their current schools for everybody. Player and school have to agree, of course.
I was not aware of the players being granted the extra year - but if they did - wouldn't that explode our roster next season. If you had them all return, plus the recruits you already gave scholarships to replace them - I assume the school has to eat that cost? And based on decisions made by UR in the past in regards to sports - they would not like to eat that cost, not only for basketball, but other sports and athletes that want to take advantage. I agree with the argument it would pay off for men's hoops and the school - but just would not look good if the school said - men's hoops players can return, but sorry women's hoops, or baseball, or women's lacross - your out of luck. You would have to be equal across the board and again - I dont think the school want to spend that money.

Bah.....each additional scholarship is roughly one Mooney game check.

like Trap said, it can be a lot of money. not just for UR. every school will have these decisions.

Let me say I like the press we've been getting. Keep it coming, I want more. Always a good thing imo for us to get positive attention.

That said a lot regarding Moon man had too much victory lap feel to it. We are trying for the elusive 1st NCAA in 10 years. Can't ignore that elephant in the room no matter how hard u try.

tried to warn many on this extension & all the Mooney pr love. Earn it then talk. U can’t go 9 years without NCAA getting paid millions & Hardt keeps handing out more like Halloween candy even tho he can see the negative position 10 year deal put us in. Keep the extension as a motivator. best team ever w all timers like Gilly Golden Burton & guys like Cayo Francis etc. we were in position to have a GREAT team but nothing is automatic. Long way to go but now we pushing the rock uphill. Meet and exceed expectations but we don’t roll like that.

big spot for us early in A10 to change the narrative back positive. Need to step up.

How we respond to losing to Hofstra tells me a lot. But Mooney shouldnt have gotten a extension. After this year a totally different roster will be on the court. And I am definitely worried about next year.

I'm worried abut this year too!
OOC we didn't beat any teams we shouldn't have. Lost to WVa which was expected. Could have beaten and should have beaten Hofstra. But Hofstra played a complete game. Good outside & good inside. They just beat us. We were up by at least 6 at one point in second half. Maybe more??? Holding 2nd half leads finally caught up today. Got away with it vs Vandy & Loyola but not today. Pattern?

55-46, then 1-11 run...

Everybody knew that Mooney was going to get an extension. We wrote about the circumstances bringing that about 1 and 2 years ago on this forum. That doesn't mean that he has earned it. Next year, the same below-average performing coach will be on full display. Many of those who are saying that Mooney has improved in the last 18-months will be offering different opinions.

As we have said all along, better players are able to mask some of his coaching deficiencies (see previous NCAA tournament teams). He needs to just get out of the way when he has enough talent (every 8-10-years or so). If the players are good enough, they can win enough to make the tournament in spite of his ineptitude.

Mooney apologist can argue all they want today. I invite you to pull this comment back up 5-6 games into next season. Next year, the same ole Mooney will be evident because he is and has always been a very average coach who is well-below average as a bench (in-game coach). If you enjoy Spider wins, you had better buckle up for next year. It ain't going to be pretty, and it's going to be hard to find the new and improved Mooney.

How can you say that? when 80 percent of roster is gone after this year?

It doesn’t make a difference. He’ll be around another 7-8 years because after we lose this class there will be a good solid 5-6 years where we are “just young” and “the future is bright”

My point was after this year (when we’ve given him an extension and any miss will just be attributable to the times), there will be several years with literally zero expectations. I don’t see Mooney going anywhere. I think he’s a nice guy - but we give him expectations of a $500k coach yet we pay him $1.3M.

Conversation with my 4 year old tonight and this is basically word for word...

Me: Sorry, the Spiders lost today
Son: Why did they lose daddy?
Me: Well, the players didn't play so good and the coach didn't coach well
Son: Why didn't the coach coach well?
Me: Sometimes he has bad games
Son: Then they should kick him out of the arena and not let him back in
Me: I agree
Son: Then you should tell them that
Me: Ok, I will

A few minutes later...

Son:. Did you write the Spiders an email yet? I don't want the coach to coach again if he doesn't coach well

My four year old who is just starting to understand sports demands more of Mooney than our administration does and this is basically year one of him understanding what he is watching with me!

I don’t have kids that young but grade school mid school hs. And I feel u. At little older ages it can be tougher. I almost want them to win as much for the kids. Mine have bought in bc their parents went to UR & they love sports. But it’s nice when they see they can more than compete w the big boys, get attention get ranked etc. u don’t want them to lose interest. I’m fortunate I don’t think they will but it’s hard u don’t know. A big year - if u meet expectations - like this helps & u can get them forever. A couple of mine follow the players on social media. This isn’t on the team not their burden it’s my job. But I don’t want them to have the little ol’ Richmond mentality.

Just out of curiosity but can someone tell me one this Mooney did “in game” to try to change how the game was unfolding?

I was only joking and kidding about this. To only that defends Mooney. You only support because he is a nice guy. Our academics limit the ability to recruit. Also how small our college is. And covid are the defense to keeping Mooney. Another loss with happen today against St. Louis.

funny to go back and read...love all the positive post now that we are in the tourney...hahahaha ; the negativity had reached unprecedented levels on this board and even during the A10 tourney..... Mooney's tenure will rival McKillops before its over and most of you guys will bitch the entire way.....

Lets go Spiders!

Still don't like him as our long term coach overall, but the guy and the team go it done in a big way this past weekend. Was hoping for a Fri/Sun slate and an 11 seed, but really can't complain. We're in the dance...just like a comet that swings by the Earth every 10 or 11 years or so. Just as often.

love the comet analogy!

Agree SpiderFan, this has been a long time coming. I am on record that was hoping BC would hire him away. Still think we would have had more success in the last 10 years if that happened. Mooney has a lot of catching up to do to get to McKillop's level, but he does do pretty well head to head. It's the physical teams that are tought to match up with.

To be fair, Mooney has more NCAA appearances/success than McKillop did his first 17 years at Davidson. Davidson was always good then got Curry and have gotten most their appearances with him since then. Of course one could argue who had more at their disposal with regards to resources.

No matter what happens this weekend, I’m still firmly in the camp of we need to move on from Mooney, whether it’s by mutual parting of ways or another team poaches him. If the latter happens I’ll laugh hysterically and say “Good luck suckers!”, and if the former happens I will wish him well in his future endeavors.

how will you react when he stays, because that's more likely?

He isn't going anywhere...he will get an extension, but I'm hopeful that Hardt will ensure his contract is incentive laden with an out clause if performance isn't meeting expectations.

He obviously pulled all the right strings in DC and got this team peaking when they needed to. We have plenty of ammunition from the past 10 years when he didn't do that though, but that is for another time to discuss. Mooney has earned the glory and praise that will come with an NCAA tourney and bid this weekend. Let him enjoy this time.

After his treatment from the community, including this fan base, I would leave at the end of this season. I would not want to work in an environment like this. Someone is always carping at his heels.
