After his treatment from the community, including this fan base, I would leave at the end of this season. I would not want to work in an environment like this. Someone is always carping at his heels.
Basketball coach is a lonely profession...Richmond fan base isn't unique in terms of how vocal we've been about underperformance (until this wknd)....gotta have thick skin or u shouldn't be a coach..you're only loved when you are winning.

Then he better go backwards. This place is mild in comparison to ANY power 5 school. And as a comparison, go read the URI board.

but the work environment might be fine. great even.

yes, this anonymous board has been vocally negative. and there was a billboard. but in his day to day, I doubt people are all over him. I think the players really like and respect him. I think the administration is mostly positive.

I'm sure there have been frustrations. everyone wants to win. but I don't think it's been brutal to work here. I sure hope not.

He obviously pulled all the right strings in DC and got this team peaking when they needed to. We have plenty of ammunition from the past 10 years when he didn't do that though, but that is for another time to discuss. Mooney has earned the glory and praise that will come with an NCAA tourney and bid this weekend. Let him enjoy this time.
By the reaction of his wife, Mooney was as shocked as the rest of us. Somebody else was obviously pulling the strings for us.

I read the wife's reaction as the dude was under immense pressure. Self imposed or by other(s), who knows?

It doesn't matter what adjustments he made or didn't make, or what strings he pulled or didn't pull - coaches by in large get too much credit when a team loses and they get too much credit when a team wins. So lets just park this thread until after the tourney when it will be announced he has signed his extension and gotten a raise. Whether or not you think he deserves it should get it is besides the point right now. The school has no choice but to extend him and to give him more money - if for nothing else to show future coaches we care (to a point) about athletics and will support you.

I mean - can you imagine, win or lose to Iowa, Mooney coming back to Richmond, getting no extension and no raise. The all time winningest coach at the school, helped pull off on of the most improbable A10 tourney runs, etc - and the reward is nothing. What do you think the next coach will see with that type of support. And I am not here to argue whether or not he deserves it. YES - my expectation is that UR makes the tourney more than 1 time every 11 years, but I am glad we made it this year, made the run, and hopefully it doesn't end.

So lets park this thread until the dancing is over. Right now - its just about Iowa and advancing.

a hot streak over the course of 72 hours does not negate a decade's worth of underachievement. I did not want to have to bring that up now and would have preferred to just enjoy the ride but Mooney Truthers are of course emboldened and can't help themselves from gloating that their boy finally did his ****ing job.

From everything I've heard, he was under tremendous pressure. The reaction of his wife at the end of the game is pretty much indicative of that. I continue to believe that he was out after this year, prior to the run we just witnessed. Gilly-Grant saved his job twice.

Exactly and I do think if Mooney would at least admit a glimpse of the reality of his underachieving teams in regards to making the tourney he would get less carping at his heels @Gallipoli.

Though maybe looking at Mooney's view though I don't see it as his plan why get the team thinking negatively? More pressure put the team though too smart to not realize the dire situation and just keep playing with glass half-full.

Whatever the bottom line team came through though it was expected of them at the start of the season. What's the saying .... "look through the windshield and not the rear view mirror." And listening McKillop's son after the game he stated the Spiders had some tough losses that could have been wins including Davidson lucky win. He said this was no #6 seed. Easily could have been 1, "like not think the that" LOL a 2, 3 seed.

Your correct, it doesn't negate it - that should be factored into the extension and raise offered. But what will also be part of that equation is - how do you handle the season that was cut short. We were a bubble team and AI models have us in the sweet 16 and elite 8!!!! But this will all come to light after the season and we can wait till then to comment on it.

How do post like this help basketball program? We all need to support the team against a difficult opponent this Thursday.

Nostradamus???? Oh, you must be talking about Vanderbilt/Morehead, and not St. Mary's.
Me and wife so pumped starting drinking early in anticipation of game. Spiders had no answer for stopping the big man. Might be wrong but St Mary's I think got of ton of O boards that game. Oh my bad, this isn't the right time for a negative post.

Omar Samham was an absolute killer. I remember during pre game intros, you shook hands with the opposing player, who was Garrett. Samham looked like he was trash talking him in the pre game, and he backed it up. The problem was, they surrounded him with 40% 3pt shooters - so it was hard to double him. I remember pulling my kids from school that day to go, left immediately after and made it in time for my 30 and over playoff game that evening. Hectic day.

Yeah I think we can table this to after season. I'm locked in on this week.

But I will say u have to be smart. We got put in a very bad situation with a too long 10 year deal and then adding on to it twice. Don't back yourselves into a contract that you are not willing to get out from under. He's still got 2 left on deal, we will very likely struggle next couple years, we need to be smart, strategic and negotiate not just give Mooney and his agent what they want.

Yes, we are going to have at least 6 months (4/15/2022-10/15/2022) to discuss this, so why now?

Perfect scenario... we beat Iowa because of our incredible Princeton style offense that is so ingenious and confusing, no coach has answers, and because of our perfect Mooney invented switching man to man D that never gives up a mismatch and is easy for the kids to learn, and Maryland comes calling with a 5 year package worth 10 million. One can wish.

here’s the thing. Over the past 10 years we have gone on runs twice. Right after the billboard and right after 05’s petition. These guys respond when Mooney genuinely thinks he may be canned and not any time else.

So…Mooney should be fired unless he makes the Elite 8.

So two more years gives him to what season under contract?

And fatherspider I see no matter what no way he leaves but College Park is relatively close to home. Show me with the amount of crap he took here that enough is enough. And how many coaches wouldn't accept the money and the challenge? Very few!

I see Mooney as a comfy coach who be too scared to make the leap. If he had the you-know-what to take it I would root hard for him to be successful. Sounds strange coming from me but he is good guy though being such would be a difficult road to success in that cutthroat level of league.

PS 2M yearly wouldn't be enough

Just now looking at Mike White going to Georgia. Read where probably had enough with cyber bulling along with now the media not having his back. Probably would have eventually been fired but was under contract till 2027. Would have gotten for sure a big buyout amount.

I say kudos to him in leaving on his terms. I guess making the tourney 4 out 6 years with one Elite 8 wasn't enough? Looked like a lock for 5 in 7 adding the COVID year. Following Donovan though wasn't going to be easy.

Personally - unless this team runs to the sweet 16, I don't see his name coming up for other jobs. We all know the administration likes him, and I think the response of Mooney and his family shows they like Richmond as well. So I don't see him leaving. I don't see a 10 year deal on the horizon. But I think giving him an extension that puts him under contract for 5-6 years is more likely, with a little pay bump.

Bonus to Mooney and staff for a job well done, definitely, it's probably already in his/their contracts.

Extension? No. He still has two years left, which is plenty. Build on this next year, then we'll talk. Hardt cannot do anything that backs him into a corner and makes it harder to make a change on short notice without us owing somebody millions of dollars.

So Frank Martin too gets canned and owed 3M. Here's the AD and what he had to say .....

"Our expectation is to compete for Southeastern Conference and national championships," athletic director Ray Tanner said. "We have great facilities, a passionate fan base and we provide our student-athletes an outstanding experience at the University of South Carolina. We will hire someone with a winning coaching history, who has the energy, passion, and commitment to excellence in all areas of the student-athlete experience.

National Championships seriously? Be satisfied with women's program reaching those heights but don't see it happening on the men's side. Good luck with that!

Had to look at Gamecocks history and have to go Maguire to see any continued b-ball success. Fogler Odum some decent seasons like Martin whose one tourney appearance was a big one losing in the Final Four. Read three-man-weave SEC preview and stated higher ups gave Martin an ultimatum better be improvement this season. Well they did improve from 6-15 to 18-13 and tied for 5th place with THW predicting a 11th place finish.

Oh and that passionate fan base half-filled the arena game-in-game out

Well guys, this tournament run has really changed the way I look at the program and the MoonMan

Breaking the 11 year drought…I think we have to extend Mooney another 2-3 seasons at least this offseason.

You can believe two things: (1) this team is great and fun to watch and (2) Mooney should still be replaced as the coach.

This week only shows how good of a team they should have been but really struggled the last two years (and many years before that). Again, props to the players for digging deep — I knew they had all the potential in the world — but not sure it changes the fact we’d likely be better over the next five years with a better coach.

Disagree. It’s been 11 years. He finally met expectations. Meeting expectations after 11 years warrants incentives in contract, but jumping into yet more years gets us more of a jump on the prior 11 years. Evaluate after next year.

Can we lock this thread until April?

We have an NCAA game in 3 days, and we should all be excited and focusing on that. We can get back to our squabbles after supporting the hell out of the team on Thursday.
