Alright, time to focus on our next game. Georgia State (Sun Belt) is coming into the Robins Center at 2-0 with wins against Brewton-Parker (non-D1) & Northeastern (83-64). As of right now, they are #97 in the KenPom rankings after starting at 102. As we all know, this game will be no cake walk. If we come out how we did vs NCCU, we will get blown out of the gym. We need better defensive play overall, but I'm really worried about the interior when Grant is out (which I question when & how long he is out of games). Hopefully Gilyard can notch a few more steals and inch closer to the all-time record. What do we think will happen Tuesday night? Mooney extension after a win, or another fun night on the message board after getting blown out at home?

We aren't beating Georgia State. You can take it to the bank. The board will be blowing up again.

we usually do pretty well against the dumb athletic teams, it’s the smart well coached teams we lose to. We beat a Kentucky and lose to a Radford or Utah St.

Meh, WVU took us to the woodshed last year. I think we’re equal opportunity.

That matchup was never going to work well for us. WVU is ready to jump and crawl in the mud all game long. We see the mud and say “uh do I have to get in there? Oh well too late now I’ll just stay out”. It seems like our intensity and toughness is where we have a disadvantage in every game

We do not play a particularly physical brand of basketball on either end of the floor. Frankly, I don’t think that’s a bad thing except perhaps when it comes to boxing out and rebounding.

But those are two big things where I’d like our mentality to be way tougher.

Georgia State is coached by Bob Lanier. Who played at St.Bonaventure. I trust his record at Georgia State than Mooney any day.

This is confusing, maybe slightly interesting, though I’m not sure I even care. We are going to mop Georgia state and I won’t think about who’s coaching them again.

I’m not making any evaluations on the merit of these predictions, but I will say that Georgia St doesn’t historically put the fear into me.

Hey guys, what do we honestly think about Ga St? Their 2 wins are against Brewton-Parker and Northeastern. It looks like there top 2 scorers are there guards of Allen and Roberts. I think we all know we have to be better defensively. I think if our guys come out focused we should be ok. Thoughts...

Well, we're going to have to outscore them, that's for sure. I think we can say that for every game. Sometimes we probably will do it, other times we won't. They have beaten a D-1 team by 20 points that was picked second in the CAA and presumably is much better than NCCU, so that alone should give us some worries.

I think they're a really good team. they beat a good Georgia Tech team last year. they return all 5 starters including a few super seniors. strong backcourt. they're going to give us a game. we'll need to score 80+ which we can. we'll need to defend which I'm not as confident about.

They have a couple of guards who can really fill it up, so we're going to need to find some defense and really bring it tomorrow night.

Agree, we def. have to guard up top a lot better. How do you guys see our help defenese? I don't think its been great and we've been late to come over for help. Our guards must be able to defend up top which will keep Grant, Matt, and Sal out of foul trouble.

My thoughts on winning come down to this. Will the team that takes the court want the game more than Georgia State. We are by far more talented than Utah State and Georgia State. Utah State wanted that game more, we got out hustled, out schemed and out intensity. The scheme is what it is, but will the 10 guys that take the floor on Tuesday up their intensity to match the other team. They didn't in their first 2 games. Hopefully, a fire has been lit, if not, we will lose on Tuesday.

With this team, this should be a win by 15 points. If we have serious aspirations of making the tournament and making a run we have to be able to beat a George State team at home easily.
they might be saying the same thing.

The spread will be interesting. Let's see if vegas puts much stock in our poor play to start the year. I tend to think the spread will still over value the Spiders and under value GA State. But I'm hoping not and that it's relatively low. Because I'd bang that as I do see a bounce back game. & we need it because otherwise we are going to start to see a lot of doubt creep in, like I used extra Covid year for this, and more role questioning that has already apparently started. Even Mooney has talked about how anxious we're playing. That in itself is quite surprising. But if the players are playing tight & anxious guess what that comes from the coach as much as anyone.

Georgia State also has 3 more tournament appearances and 2 more tourney wins than us since I stepped foot on campus in 2012. But then again, more tourney appearances than us can be said for the majority of D1 schools

Pregame with Golden and Mooney. Grant did say the Utah State performance was unacceptable, but he also said the magic word..."competed." Mooney also says it's "probably fine" that we haven't played our best yet and he's happy that we're "moving in the right direction."

We missed covering the spread by 17 in each game. Hope the trend doesn't continue

If the opening line is still heavily weighted by preseason expectations of both teams, I would think it would be the same line as Utah St, but hopefully without the same outcome.

If the spread is Georgia St +4, how would you wager?

Spiders. Bounce back game like I mentioned. Not always but generally I prefer to bet the ML and take spread out. & tbh I usually best against the teams I want to win. Nothing worse than your team losing and losing the bet, if u r into that sort of thing. In this case tho I'd be all over Spids. Granted we've looked like poo poo but hard to imagine we can play 3 straight poor games and start 1-2 with this team. But if spread too high the ML value isn't there. If you think it will be like USU game it will be higher. Think it will be a little higher than Spids -4 but who knows.

I think the this game and the USU game start at Spids -6 but USU moved up and this one may move down...

But not below 4 unless very heavy betting on GSU...

I've said before that Mooney coaches his players as if he's going to have them for 8 or 9 years each. And ironically now, here he is with four guys who are in their 5th or 6th years, and yet it doesn't seem to matter. He's still not feeling much urgency, apparently. Amazing.
