Forecast for Duquesne

I believe '93 was the last time they beat us st home...i seem to remember losing to them at their place in the last 10 yrs or so...terrible either way

From the RTD this AM..we owned them up until today:

The Spiders beat DU 22 times in 23 A-10 meetings, with the Spiders’ last loss in the series coming in 2012

It's like "Groundhog Day" game after game, year after year. At under 6-7 min, whether we're leading or not, the slowdown begins. Stop attacking and start dribbling 20+ seconds of every possession. Kills momentum and opposite of what got us a lead or at least kept us scoring and close. And had chances tonight to make Dukes pay for full court press, but what do we do? Pass it back out to dribble some more. All of this is on Mooney and his coaches. But if this horror show continues with home crowd seeing few wins this season, can only hope Hardt won't ignore the outrage fans feel already, like he did with the FB HC and assistants. Mediocrity is unacceptable and that's where we are right now with both programs.

Listening to him makes me want to vomit. What an embarrassment. F your "competing," coach. We lost. To another terrible team. For about the seventh time this year. He's like the liar who has repeated his lies so many times he actually believes them. He says "we competed" and believes it makes everything ok. It's his crutch. It's pathetic. Just like he's made this program.

Costanza!

It tends to be the same recipe, shoot poorly from 3/FT and we often end up short. Not too different from most other teams but our 2pt offense was pretty decent.

The problem continues to be that we just do not defend that well. The D looked better tonight but that’s a little like saying John Belushi was slimmer than Chris Farley.
The defense needs improvement, but that didn’t seem like the reason we lost this game. Yes there were a couple of alley-oop plays that the video board guy apparently liked, but for the most part the normally pourous in the paint D was pretty solid. As also noted, the D was good on both unplanned bank shots at the end of the game that proved to be the difference.

Free throw misses were a factor, but we didn’t have enough trips to the line to really put us over the top if we made them. Which leads us to 3 pt shooting, which I think was the primary factor. Again as others have noted, we had the wrong person shooting a 3 towards the end of the game and our “designated” 3 pt shooters were 0-4, 1-4, and 1-2. That simply is not going to cut it.

Put on top of that the fact that we didn’t see a consistent offensive game plan (resorted to outstanding 1 on 1 type play for Cayo and Gilyard) and a lack of preparation for the press (I watched one game and knew they would do that at some point) and it adds up to a loss.

I think this was the most disappointing lost I have seen at the Robins Center this year because it is a game that could have easily been a win. Duquesne was not impressive.

A few random thoughts:
1) It looks like another A10 team has overpaid and over committed for a coach. I realize he is only in year 2, but I am not impressed. I guess time will tell.
2) I predict the Dukes get in a brawl at some point this season. A bunch of cocky punks that are going to get their due. Unfortunately, all that happened in our game was a T on Grant for a tiny push.

Duquesne is 3-1 with 11 new players and you are criticizing ITS coach?? He inherited a dumpster fire last year, had to sign about five guys after the spring recruiting period, did decently last year and is two games ahead of our 14-year boy wonder right now. He also makes about half what Mooney does.

Also, is Mooney delusional? He said our defense really improved. We just held GW to 58 points on the road four days ago. Tonight we allowed 74 points to Duquesne at home. Is he even watching the games? Jesus.

Not going to pick apart CM in his postgame but I’m struck by the lack of concern over what I believe is another bad home loss. He doesn’t seem troubled by it so either he isn’t worried or he’s doing an exceptionally good job of hiding it.

A lot of missed/blocked shots around the rim were big factors as well. Helped them stick around until the end.

Seemed happy go lucky after the game. Guess the guys Moliva talked to are right, Mooney has another 400 days to figure it out.

We held them to 46% from the field, and 34% from 3. The defense was good tonight, but very few teams will win with only 2 made 3s.

I’m wondering if he knows that the deal is done and doesn’t care at this point.

and a coming out for Cayo. Get Sherrod back, add Francis and get a coach and we might see a quick rebound next year.

Agree wholeheartedly on the latter part. I mean while there are ton of examples u can simply look at UR own history w Beilein replacing Dooley. But I think Cayo has already been out. Impressed with him many games. He’s a long wing haven’t had in a while.

In fact this worry bout transfers - & I’m of the opinion odds do not increase with a change - well I’d put gilyard & Cayo at top. To me GG and Sherod r less likely due to redshirt years. Now they’d be very high following year as grad transfer. But keep Mooney & go through a middling year next year and they are as good as gone as grad transfers imo. BUT...get a new coach w new energy new attitude around the program & show turnaround capable and we keep them. So I think a new coach easily increases the odds they stay for their 5th years. Think about that Hardt.

I know many talk about this “compete” stuff on here but man that postgame beginning was just comical. At least he didn’t ruminate on the bank shots. It’s Duq Rich in mid Jan & we’re 7-10. An unfortunate bank shot is when some goon from UNCW banks one in to keep us from another NCAA back during Beilein era. Now that’s unfortunate actually way way worse.

The point about waiting until after next year for the change and the highly increased likelihood of the Golden and Sherod grad transfer is a really good one.

So you would say our defense "improved" from Saturday?

I don't think he said that. I heard him say "we still have a ways to go, but there has been improvement on the defensive end for us." Which, the last 2 games, there clearly has.

I think he signed a 7 year, 7 million dollar contract. Not half of Mooney unless we are paying Mooney 2 million a year. He did have a Mooney moment when he got a tech against PSU in a tie game with 5 seconds left, resulting in 6 straight PSU FTs.

Mooney has an 11-year contract that pays him$1.2 million annually. This is his 14th year, so he will have earned more than$14 million by the end of his current contract.

I agree, there is no doubt these kids are getting better on defense. There are certainly still lapses at crucial times, but less than earlier in the year. Free throws lost the game tonight. Shooting 55% from FT line and missing several front ends of 1&1 chances. Just no exuse in that.

"We competed" - 3 times in the first 30 seconds.

At least he didn't mention the great practices. He needs to go NOW! He is the picture of an entitled, complacent coach who is just cashing his paychecks and doesn't really care.

Regarding the defense...why didn't we press them at all? I'd throw that in a couple of times a half each game. They pressed and it resulted in a turnover right under the basket, and a quick two points.

Isn't a team that Competes the absolute minimum? If your team doesn't compete the coach should be fired immediately. Kids who we (and most all D1 schools) recruit etc. are hard wired to play hard and compete - - - its no accomplishment that they did so. All that's saying really is that the coach hasn't sucked the life out of them.

Let me be clear - - I appreciate that the kids compete and play hard, especially when circumstances are difficult etc. But its no accomplishment worth noting etc. for the coach that his kids competed. Good for the kids, but no credit to the coach for sure!

Wow. WOW. WOW. You are all in on excuse city. You are challenging for Truther number 1. We are attacking the players, until we lose and the truthers attack them to excuse Mooney. I have seen it all now. Carry on boys, carry on. Good effing amusement on this here lil message board. Love it.

Hold up -- I said that it didn't help that Grant -- a 20% three-point shooter -- shot a 3 pointer at a critical juncture with a one point lead with Gilyard wide open in the corner, and then Gilyard missed critical free throws, and that constitutes: (1) attacking the players, and (2) excuse making for Mooney?

Can I get a ruling here?

What will Mooney's excuse be tonight? They were too big??? They had too many transfers??? He should just be accountable and say "we're not a very good team right now and that's on me" or "here's what I'm doing to fix it". However we all know that won't happen. What I do know is that maaaaaaannnnnn we suck.
We match up pretty well size wise, they are as young a team, You and, especially we, can't shoot 55% FT and 20% 3pt and win. How are tip backs counted, this only shows Duquesne with 8 Offensive rebounds it appeared they had 5 in on sequence, I would have guess 15 or more for the game.

We held them to 46% from the field, and 34% from 3. The defense was good tonight, but very few teams will win with only 2 made 3s.
You know that we held them to 34% for 3 is not a great defensive measure. They had the same fairly open shots the entire game, in the first half they didn't hit them in the second they did, Including the bank shot.

Ummm, did you watch the game or just going complete homer? Golden was out of control, any time he doesnt get his way, he over reacts. He needs to chill.
