Forecast for Dayton

In the bizarro world of UR basketball, you can choose which games count and things likes wins and losses don’t matter. As long as the forever young team competes, all is good.
I'd love to hear Mooney explain when it was that we competed in this game.

Don't disagree, BUT, the super sad fact is that Dayton is not a great team. Anthony Grant is another Mooney. You are likely right that they will feast on most of the ultra weak A-10.

As mediocre as they are, Dayton doubled up Richmond. That is a terrible statement about the status of UR's program.
Dayton is a better team than you give them credit for four of the losses are to top twenty teams by a total of about 20 points have three transfers from power five schools on the bench ..Singed a 6.9 transfer who played Florida last year just before todays game. Will have four players 6.9 and above next year Toppin is a redshirt had not played any organized basketball for 18 months before this year. Looks like they have a chance to be a top twenty team or better next year.Best team they beat this year was Butler disagree with your observation. By the Dayton hosted there 10 million fan to the Arena today. A arena who is in a the second phase of a 76 million remodeling third and final stage to be competed in off season

Gilyard on the post game said this was the first big road environment the team had played in this year. Reason #1001 why you don't play a cupcake OOC schedule. So, now you had a team that was because they played a home loaded cupcake schedule, ill prepared for a hostile environment which then our head coach, who develop said OOC, uses as an excuse. Pathetic.

Wow a 76 million dollar remodel. Are they building this new arena in outer space or something?

Disagree with your observation of Dayton of the games they have lost this year four of them have been to top twenty five teams. Virginia, Oklahoma Mississippi St and Auburn other was Tulsa all this with nine scholarship players one got hurt and lost for the season after second game.. Rebuilt this team from last year lost five players from that team. He has three transfers sitting on the bench from power five teams signed another before todays game a 6.9 player that played at Florida. Just finished phase two of a 76 million dollar remodeling of the Arena and also hosted there 10 million fan today. Team is predicted to be a top twenty team next year or better lose one senior. Toppin no1 the kid you saw flying around is a redshirt freshman who had to sit out last year to get qualified had not played organized basketball for 17 months he is not bad. .So there better than what you think .There best win this year is they beat Butler. Just thought I would feel you in on them.

Over our last 8 games we have done better than this forum expected 6 of the 8 games. This was the 2nd time we played worse than expected. With a young team we will be inconsistent. It was hard to watch, but we only lost one game today. I still think we have the potential to be very competitive in the conference. We will see.

Can u please stop acting like the ODU game where we gave up a 23-6 run at home to a rival to finish the game was in any way a positive. Tho a 23-6 run by an opponent did meet expectations. Not exceed. Meet.

No offense orkie. Our issue is with our pathetic excuse for a head coach. It doesn't matter who we play at this point, we suck. Dayton will do well in the league, but our coach will probably make you guys out to be a Final Four team in his constant excuse-machine speak. That's what we are all sick of.

Most on here know we are not a good team, hard to gauge how good someone is hen they play us. Your guys looked good today, time will tell.

No offense taken after what UD went through last year we are very happy with what we see ,our knew improved Arena A team that plays together beat Butler had Virginia and Oklahoma and Mississippi St on the ropes and should of beat them. Feel your pain on your coach. Sometimes a change restarts the program. And I do wish you luck .The A10 is down and we need every team to step it up. The big boys are trying to push the other conferences out of the NCAA .Dayton's future is looking good I have had season Tickets 33 years and enjoying this year. The arena is a real showplace but I always thought it was have saw some great basketball there. And I plan to see some more

Ya'll have a great arena, best in the conference, by far. We have a terrible coach, worst in the conference, by far.
Thank you, just thought the outer space remark was uncalled for. Why would someone come on here and make a false claim about a arena. .And I don't like someone trying to be a smart ass It has become a state of the art building .And I think it will help in recruiting , more NCAA games to add to there already record total played there..And when and if conference realignment comes along it will help. UD to be considered.

Was that out in outer space enough for you. Enjoyed your try at humor.[/QUOTOrkie, do you remember our teams from 2010-2012 that use to have great games against you and even won at Dayton. Well we have the same coach and nothing to show since those years. We are tired of playing second fiddle, and want what Dayton has, consistent perforformace. We have a great but smaller arena that is getting more facility support for the basketball program that should be a draw. UR just does not have the coaching leadership to take us to the next level.

Dayton talent was far superior and their coaching strategy, parred with the talent overpowered anything we had on the floor. No 1 was a man among boys. Your problem with him is he will not be there 4 years. Our coach refuses to adjust strategy and thus we are left frustrated and wishing more and more for a coaching change.

Does anyone have a link to the post-game presser? Predictably, I can't find it on our website.

Sounds like CM is all in on the youth argument as an excuse for our poor play. We have heard this one before.

The post-game interview could have been pulled from a number of games in recent memory. One thing I still don't get is how we are not able to breakdown a zone because one guy is out. If Nate is the only guy who can do this, then it shouldn't matter how many fouls he has, leave him in the game.

The fact that we don't have an adequate alternative when he's out is also telling. It's reasonable to expect a dropoff in performance from your starter to your bench guy, it's not reasonable that there is no alternative.

A few of my thoughts from yesterday:

1. Echoing what others here already said, there is no excuse for Gilyard playing the whole game. Does he have the ability and toughness to do it - no question. But why would he be out there when we are down 30+ down the stretch? To lose by 25 instead of 35 to make the game look not quite as ugly? To have him tie a record?

On the other hand there is much more to lose by having him out there until the bitter end (potential injury/re-aggravation of injury, lack of playing time for bench players, etc.)

2. I thought defense and rebounding were actually decent for most of the first half. The problem was our offense couldn't do anything. The answer? Take a 3 pointer nearly every time down the court. It's like once we get down by 8, 10 or 15 points the thinking is we can only get back into the game by the 3 pointer, rather than forcing it inside (where we actually shoot a very high %) and trying to draw fouls. So we jack up 3's which leads to long rebounds and fast break opportunities and the lead snowballs.

3. Going along with #1 - when we were down by 33 points with 4 minutes to play in the game, the lineup for the remainder of the game should have been Grace, Sal, Tomas, Noah and Andre. There is no reason to play a starter at that point, period. Really those 5 should have had serious time much earlier in the game as well, but even more so once the outcome has been decided.

4. I follow Spider basketball super closely and have for almost my entire life. Stats, records, recruiting, moving schedules around to be sure I can attend games, etc. I can honestly say that right now is the most disinterested I have ever been. I watched some of the game yesterday, but not all of it.

I am beyond the point of being upset to just starting to unplug from it. I know I'm not alone. If something doesn't change, the University risks losing a generation of passionate fans like myself to this malaise. Not saying I could never be lured back in, but it takes a long time to become a serious fan like many of us here and it may take a long time to get back to that level of commitment.

1. I agree
2. Mostly agree, but not sure I would call our first-half defense decent. Even though Dayton only scored 29 first-half points, we still gave up way too many layups.
3. I agree
4. I am still big time interested, but I can understand why you and some others might be feeling the way you do.

I hear you. I am much the same. Finally gave up my season tickets in disgust, but remain a staunch Spider fan. Am somewhat embarrassed to admit that I did not check the game time yesterday. Missed the entire game...perhaps a blessing in disguise.

It verges on unpardonable that the Administration has given CM so much time to build a program when it has been painfully obvious to even a casual sport fan that he simply is not up to the task. The money he has received relative the results achieved is a disgrace and speaks ill of our University management.

Agree with you 100%. It is Mooney's "you can't fire me now, we are on the cusp of greatness" theme to keep his job. Time will tell if it works for him.

I’m with you. I went for a walk through Boston and had a dozen oysters instead of watching the game. Unfortunately, I feel like I made the right decision on how to spend my afternoon...

I would add, everyone but Gilyard was god-awfully atrocious. People not named Gilyard went 3-22 from 3 point land, nearly all of them wide-effing-open. As usual, Mooney deserves the criticism he is getting, but I hope and pray you will all also admit that at some point, the players need to simply make open baskets. We missed layups, threes, and foul shots, and to me that is much more on the players than the coach.
