Forecast for Dayton

Every time Mooney blames a result on Nate Cayo having been in foul trouble ... drink...

We played a soft OOC schedule. As bad as that was, if today's conference schedule is indication, things will not be pretty. Maybe all conf teams are not as physical as Dayton, but all they have to do is run zone defense, try to score in the paint, and crash the boards. We obviously are mismatched physically against teams like Dayton, and they easily took advantage of it. Jeez - what do you think their game plan was when they see a week South Alabama dunk 9 times against us? It was quite a sight to watch the alley oops of Dayton flying through the air today on multiple occasions. I hope today is not the norm for the conference schedule, but I expect enough games to follow today's pattern.

Golden has been very good offensively, today he wasn't. It happens.

Dayton is actually the first team that purposely focused on limiting Golden. They had 2 or 3 long guys in his area and/or leaning toward keeping him from receiving the ball. When he did catch it, they crowded his space, AND they had the athletic big guy with long arms to bother him down low.

Golden had an off day, but ...

I will add: This is why you make a coaching change now. We cannot waste 17 more games looking this inept and lost. You risk losing these guys for good and wasting a significant amount of their potential growth opportunity.
Ii was not really thinking a change made sense until end of season, BUT agree it is needed (but wont happen). Being Tarrant in to finish the season and by default you get a jump on advertising the position ahead of the other off season coach firings.

Don't disagree, BUT, the super sad fact is that Dayton is not a great team. Anthony Grant is another Mooney. You are likely right that they will feast on most of the ultra weak A-10.

As mediocre as they are, Dayton doubled up Richmond. That is a terrible statement about the status of UR's program.

Mo, maybe Mooney does get it? Save your job as best as possible. Never admit mistake and give impression that your doing your job adequately. Avoid firing yourself and force someone else to do it. I said before Mooney could be a good politician but if not, publicist could be his calling.

Wow, playing Gilyard 40? That is god awful. Need to get his family in touch with Sherod's malpractice lawyer.

I am all in on the notion that college athlete's can play 35-40 mpg. Kevin Anderson did it.

BUT:
1) Gilyard has a much slighter build
2) Already has an injury this year that I am guessing is not 100 per cent until end of season.
3) It was a blowout. Nothing to be gained at the end for Gilyard.
Leads me to believe Moon just kept him in to try to make the score a little better - i.e. save his job. Damaging and Disgusting.

Fire this clown now.

They didn't need to be a great team to whip us. They are light years beyond High Point, South Alabama, and the rest of the puffs we loaded up against. That should give an indication of where our program is; not that most of we realists on this site didn't know.

Grant may not be the best coach out there, but he didn't need to do much coaching to beat us badly.

I would not be surprised if we come in last place in the A10. This team is much worse than last year. The loss of Khwan, Buck and Sherod is devastating. Can't imagine Mooney will be here next year at this point.

Excellent observation 23. It was pure stupidity to have Gilyard in that game the last 5 minutes.

Gillard has a high motor, could play 60 minutes if he had to. Don't worry about him. He and Cayo are the only two on the team who appear to be in basketball shape.

Come on......... Gillard has a iffy hamstring and playing 40 in a blow out is not only not good for him but didn't give someone else some experience. Mooney that is pathetic.

Over our last 8 games we have done better than this forum expected 6 of the 8 games. This was the 2nd time we played worse than expected. With a young team we will be inconsistent. It was hard to watch, but we only lost one game today. I still think we have the potential to be very competitive in the conference. We will see.

Hope you are right. However Mooney would be paid the remainder of his contract and then the new coach would have to be paid. I can't see the university doing both. Afraid we are stuck with Moonman til the end of 2021-2022.

80s fan, I appreciate the optimism. Am curious about a few things you’ve stated and have some questions:

Why are you picking the last 8 games? 51% of those who voted on forum predicted we would win between 4-7 OOC games and we won 6. Exactly within the range the majority thought.

https://richmond.forums.rivals.com/threads/how-many-conference-wins-this-season.11274/

And why are you saying this is the 2nd time we played worse than expected? Was losing to Longwood, Hampton, Wyoming, and Oral Roberts expected?

You also mentioned that we only lost one game today. Do we play more than one game in a day? Because the way I see it we got blown out today and have lost 8 games so far this season on pace for another losing season.

And finally, what do you mean by being very competitive this season? Beating Fordham or La Salle a couple of times and staying within 30 points against VCU, Dayton, St. Louis?

What does this even mean? In the last 8, we are 4-4 with wins over 3 really bad teams and Wake but you can almost cancel that win out with the loss to Oral Roberts.

Go back 9 games and you include a loss to Hampton. 10 and an L to Wyoming.

We’re not a good team.

Amen. No matter how you move the deck chairs around, we completely suck. Again.

If we are competitive in the conference then that tells me the conference has fallen further than we have, and that says a lot. Look, I'd like for us to run the table, but at this stage, I can only hope for .500, and that may be a real stretch. If I had to bet, I'd say we have a losing record in the conference. That seems like the most realistic outcome at this point.

Where on earth to you come up with this? we've done better than expected? We've beaten a few bad teams (coppin, highpoint,???)and lost to some bad to fair teams ORU, etc. I guess we can just ignore games we don't like?

time for Grant to build a bench if he wants to contend -- really only played 7 all day
Dayton only has eight healthy scholarship players lost one beginning of season had to pull a redshirt from one player has three transfers on the bench until next year. Had almost a complete turnover from last year. Had six players leave

In the bizarro world of UR basketball, you can choose which games count and things likes wins and losses don’t matter. As long as the forever young team competes, all is good.
