@ Fordham 1/18/2022

I’m just going what I think or feel, doesn’t mean I’m right. Not sure if it’s an indictment on my part. A lot of you guys have seen way more 🕷🏀 than me and certainly know better than me in that respect. I think Gus is our best option right now and he was very solid last night. The one thing I will say about Gus or others that are given a legit shot(not 3 min here or there)…they usually perform well. When Dji & Connor have been given solid minutes they perform. In terms of Dji, he’s not a guy who you can throw in for 2-3 min and expect him to be a scoring machine. It hasn’t been his game ever. But give him a legit shot and he can and will perform.
Very good point. How can you realistically expect a player to demonstrate their potential in 2-3 minutes of playing time?

It’s the craziest part of the season. Sherod seemed off in the beginning and Mooney made a change early to his credit. But then we all watch Wilson struggle repeatedly and Dji / Connor aren’t given a chance? Explain this one to me!

I realize I don’t have the benefit of seeing practice. But I also watch every game and know both of these players have a ton of potential.

I hope Dji doesn’t grow frustrated and transfer next season. Hopefully the quality of the diploma with the potential for a breakout season are enough to keep him around. :)

Just don't believe anything you read on this message board. These guys aren't coaches, However, what you have said makes sense. It is difficult for a player to develop a rhythm and confidence to sit out and then come in and provide a spark. Goose has really worked on his game. He is also very used to coming off the bench and contributing.

question for those who’ve played beyond high school and intramurals. Burton hasn’t looked the same since scouts started watching. Is this a coincidence? Or does he press and think too much because of it? He doesn’t seem to force too much except when he’s backing down and trying to create.
I think if he is denied catch and shoot by defense then his dribble not very good to create

Goose usually is the guy who can drive the ball right to the basket when the rest of our offense is stagnant. I really enjoy that part of his game. He does play a little out of control at times, but the good outweighs the bad most nights IMO.
Gus little out of control vs Wilson’s version of out of control, I will take in a heart beat.

This game - although not very pretty, our defense was still pretty poor, but luckily Gilyard scores 31 and Fordham turns it over 22 times. Some of that was our defense, but some of that is just Fordham being bad. We did let them shoot 49% overall and 41% from 3. So when they did not turn it over - they scored.

But this game I think will allow Mooney to continue with Goose starting. Having Sherod off the bench as 6th man. Then after that - some minutes for Grace, Wilson, and Crabtree - but time will be limited. I was surprised Grace got so much time - I don't see that continuing against better teams though, but think behind Sherod - he will have to play to give Grant a rest.

Next 2 at LaSalla and at URI - games we must win heading into VCU. But being on the road - I always feel uneasy with this team.

Unfortunately Dji has been bitten pretty good with the injury bug, really stinks for him. I agree completely on the few minutes here and there really being a detriment to having any consistency at the 2 guard. I have noticed the exact same thing, and especially with Dji. As soon as he is in the flow of the game, out he comes. Connor same thing. At this point in the season if Goose's body is good, I do think we just need to let him play.

In general though, I do think the Mooney trait of always deferring to older guys (I know sman is going to point out all the frosh that played minutes) is very detrimental. The times freshman have played big minutes is usually due to recruiting misses and gaps. Just show up and your merits from last season will get you to the front of the line for your cheese.

A win is a win. But we were in a dogfight with the team picked last in the league whose best player just quit the team last week. Gilly balled out, Goose makes sense to start. We still allowed Fordham to make their most 3's in a game all season. Some things will never change.

LaSalle is up next, their best player also just decided to transfer and like Fordham they completely suck, play in a high school gym and if the league could kick out two members, it would be LaSalle and Fordham. Expect another tight one against LaSalle, a team like Fordham, this group of 24 years with nearly 6,000 combined points should blow the doors off of, but they won't.

Agree.

Think about this. Our 2 conference wins so far have been against some of the worst teams in the league, and we didn't dominate in those games. Our losses are by 27 to a St J team I think picked to finish 10th in the league (????) as well as to a good Davidson team and a good St L team.

Bottom line - we've let crappy teams stay in the game with us, got blown out at home by a team we should have beaten, and haven't beaten either team that we are supposedly as good as. Right now that tells me we are avg in the league. We have the players to be top shelf, but the ship needs to be righted quickly.

Come on man, their record is respectable. The were better than their pre-season prediction. Can’t we just with a win?
It's Fordham, minus their best player, playing in an empty gym and they made us play our starters the full 40 minutes. We could celebrate more if we would have blown them out, but we showed the same tendency all year to play to the level of our competition due to an inability to play defense and rebound.

If Gilly doesn't go off and have a career night, we very well could have lost this game. I am encouraged by Gilly's last two games though, if he can play like this the rest of the season, it gives us a punchers chance in the A-10 tourney and to perhaps beat a team or two that is an upper echelon team in the league.

my biggest question is where has this Gilly been all season? Why did it take until halfway through January for him to rediscover himself.

Can’t explain that to you bc i scratch my head on that as well. I think Djis biggest frustration is the injury one right now. He just wants to hoop and has bought in to what the staff is doing, from what I’ve seen. Transferring hasn’t crossed our minds and even though I’ve spoken of loyalty…we are a loyal family and believe that stands for something. We’ve always got to a team and stayed MS, HS, & AAU. Every coach is different and we are looking at this season as another Fr season with 3 yrs left. God willing Dji will get over the injury bug and play some meaningful/impactful minutes again this yr. I think everyone sees that good things always happen when he’s on the floor. He not perfect and will mess up but all in all he’s a playmaker and I believe that he is one of our most skilled/versatile players. We had a talk about PT for guys that are in his class and there aren’t a lot of guys that are FR/So that are playing a ton esp those that we played with in HS/AAU & they are exp the same thing. I really think our backcourt could be really good next season, young but good with Jason, Dji., Zay and Crab. The more this season shakes out I think Tyler could be back. Next year Coach will have to play young guys and they will have to perform for us to be successful. That’s why I think the younger guys that are able this season should play a little more. Any great program will have this esp Mid Majors bc guys often aren’t 1 and done. 🕷🏀

We can't win consistently playing defense the way we do. Its just not going to happen. Way to many open looks and straight drives to the basket. It's no coincidence that these teams are having their best shooting nights of the year against us. Way to many open looks night in and night out. Glad we won, but it's the same issues dogging us again and again.

Very well explained and reasoned. I hope your son shares these thoughts as well!

Various thoughts/observations from the armchair:
  1. I said this before the 10 day break between games, but Cayo should have devoted it to reverting to last year's FT shooting form. It's beyond inexplicable how Cayo can keep trying it this way, and for the coaches to allow it to continue to happen. Comfort doesn't matter one effing bit if the form is terrible. FIX IT!!!!
  2. Two + years ago, it became pretty clear that our roster wasn't very good at match-up zone. So they spent the summer installing straight man. I wonder if this roster (Dji, Crab, Cayo, Burton) would actually be better going back to the match-up. It's too late to install it, regardless.
  3. I expect Burton to have a really good offensive game next time out. But agree with Fezz that the next skill he really needs to develop is ball-handling.
  4. I think Grace is a better defensive player than Golden, and was not surprised that our defensive execution in the last 5 minutes of the game last night was improved. Just sayin.

He does…we talk multiple times a day😀
My son his freshman year of college soccer was still recovering from PCL and Meniscus tear and would at times wear his
knee brace. Then he tweaks his meniscus and has to sit out of practice and games for a month. The coach was nervous that first year to play him till he played in Spring season with no issues and gained confidence of the coach He never got injured again until he split his nose open and broke it his senior year in first 4 minutes of a NCAA PLAYOFFS. The team doctor for other team(home team) happened to be an ER Doc and stitched him up and he went back in 15 minutes later.

Maybe Dji just needs to get thru this injury bug time period. Crabtree has gone thru right much also. The hip thing with Andre was his first big injury issue from what I remember. There is light at the end of the tunnel for Dji and we are pulling for him.

Yes, it's crazy how many open looks and straight line drives we give up. Saw Burton finally get a basket, or maybe it was FT's. Then on the other end his man drove past him from right wing right to the rim for zero resistance lay up. Announcer called it out and they showed Mooney grab his head and then move on. Just seems that there is no consequences for not playing good/tough D. Honestly think it is more culture and mindset than man to man vs match up vs zone.

Agreed. Opponents are shooting 45% overall and nearly 37% from 3 against us. And in the A10 its even worse. Shooting 48% overall and 42% from 3. Not a good recipe. As we are hoping to outscore opponents, but we hit too many cold spots to rely on that.

I thought Grace played well but he should have stepped in on that one.

Agree about Grace last night, hope Golden is ok. Meanwhile, I didn't even see Sal on the bench? Is there something going on?

I don't get it. If there are fundamental flaws in an aspect of a player's game (example - foul shooting), it's incumbent on the coaches to help make the needed corrections. Seems like 2 years ago Cayo had really bad foul shot but last year was corrected. Seems the problem is back.

Not the first player to have bad foul shooting form & results. Not going to name names, but there was a player several years ago that had bad form / results on the foul line. I don't think it was ever addressed, but at this stage I can't say 100%. I just remember the form and results were bad.

Missed foul shots here or there can be the difference in wining vs losing. We need all the points we can get, and foul shots are open looks. Make them.

Glad his old teammates are experiencing the same thing. Not overly surprising since all of last year’s seniors got the extra year option and those players did not count against a scholarship cap (of course the schools still had to have the money available to offer a scholarship).

Definitely hope Dji gets over the bad luck soon and hope he gives his ankle time to get back to 100%. At least he isn’t being rushed back to play when he really shouldn’t, since there are plenty of guys available this year.

Looking forward to next year too. I think we should see a more energized team. Just need to hope the Spiders can get a decent post player or two from the portal.

Dad told us before the last game.

the current starting lineup isn't getting us off to good starts. Goose isn't the shooting answer. Nick is shooting well. I'd go back to starting him. I like offensive guys to come right out of warmups and play. defense first guys can work in off the bench.

but I'm not shortening the bench. that makes no sense. if anything I'm going deeper. Wilson certainly has to play. you don't bury him.
I concur on the sentiment about starting out hotter on offense but not sure Nick is the answer. He has definitely looked sketchy with his early shots not falling. Feels like it’s taking him time to heat up.

I also don’t think he’s coming in for the 2G, he’s been coming in more frequently for Nate. Not sure CM is prepared to start the game without Cayo out there.

I just finally got to watch the game. My god I fell on the floor laughing after that technical on Gilyard. Incompetence at its highest from the ref. Thank god the kids at home won’t think that…looking at someone is allowed. LOL
