Don't remember Diekvoss sitting on the bench before without warmups on until last night. Looked like he was ready to go if needed. Does this mean anything different? He is redshirted as far as I know but wondered if this meant he might be used since we are down to a shorter bench with Zo. Any insights?

My thought was that he was suited up for emergency purposes only, meaning the only way he plays is if we lose another player to injury.

I'd guess the same as 97. He was in uniform and got some coaching up before the game started, assuming he's ready in case of another injury or emergency - no other reason to burn his shirt this late in the season.

I wondered this, too. He participated in the layup lines, and looked ready. If that went into OT, and we lost some players to foul trouble, I wonder if they would put him in.

As I commented to 97 last night, nothing would have screamed "Rock bottom!" than having to burn his redshirt with 7 games to go in the season during a home game against Fordham. I think I would have rather we lost the game than do that, quite honestly.

I would hope they wouldn't waste him this late in the year. Not that we don't need him, but it would serve little purpose.

I heard the whole thing was just a ploy to see how Spidernation would respond. You know, a trial balloon...

Exactly. To me you only burn a guy's shirt this late if you are planning to have him play 15-20 minutes a game the rest of the way and you are convinced beyond a doubt that he will really play a key role in helping us win. If you're going to do it so that he can play 5 minutes and take 2 shots, just play a walk-on. We have a bunch of them, and I think a few are more than capable of seeing that kind of time.

Guys I would play at this point in the season before Diekvoss.

Chu
Moran
Kirby
Managers
Women's Basketball Team Managers
Go to the Weinstein Center and pick up anyone shooting a basketball with a UR ID.

Seriously - no way we burn his redshirt. If we do - that is cause to fire the entire staff right there on the spot.

I agree Trap. Chu is the best shooter on the team anyway. 80% from 3 career!!!

good question for the next call-in show.
my guess is it's Chandler willing to take one for the team. "I know we're short-handed, Coach. I'm here if you need me".
of course we'd hate to burn it, but the team isn't giving up. the season isn't over.
and honestly, if another guy went down. Chandler might have a better chance at extended time now than he will next year. we "only" lose Kendall's 35 mpg. everyone else is back and we add Wood, Fore, Friendshuh, Diekvoss and Johnson. 4 or 5 active guys aren't going to play. just the way it is.

I am betting Matt Smith has something to do with Diekvoss dressing out! He's probably looking at this thread and related comments as material for his next tweet!

guys are going to come in as frosh, not shirt and play a few minutes all season. burning his shirt is not going to make that big a difference over 4 years. we have had lots of guys with all of our coaches going back to DT who sat for three, four years with very few career minutes. we have no idea of his potential at all so if we need him, we use him and don't look back. really nothing to lose sleep over.

If we had a chance at the NCAA tourney - then yes - we burn it in a heartbeat. But realistically - our chances of making the NCAA rest solely on winning the A10 tourney. And not sure if anyone has noticed - we have only done that once in our A10 tenure, and in the last 3 years - we have not been very good in games not played in the Robins Center.

Not to mention - in the standings today - we are looking at an 8 seed, possibly 9 seed in the A10 tourney. I don't know the recent history of the tourney - but I can't remember that low a seed winning it all.

Point being - 0% chance we burn his redshirt. If the staff though early in the year to redshirt him, either because he was not ready or guys ahead were just plain better and not enough minutes to go around. Why burn that now? If he doesn't pan out in 3 years - he can graduate and transfer for 1 year to play somewhere else like Sparrow. If he does pan out to be a useful player for us - then we have him for one extra year, which might be the year we return to the NCAA tourney in 2019.

But why would you go through almost 80% of the season with him as a redshirt, with a team that has a 13-11 record and all of suddent say to yourself - lets play him, he can help us. If he could help us - we should have played him sooner then.

I focused on him in early shooting and warm-ups last night and young Mr. Diekvoss has a beautiful stroke.

That's all we need out there is some one else that is scared to shoot. Save him until next year. This year is over as far as post season.

I doubt Matt Smith is going to be opening his big trap again on Twitter.

Playing him after the OOC would have been ok with me, now I agree it would be a waste.

Why would we play him ? he can shoot the ball.. I know I sound sour but the offense has looked like mud. TJ and TA should be posting up every possession ,and if they are not getting position properly, COACH THEM HOW TO, or do we prefer guys who just pass the ball around and don't even look interested in offense at all. lackadaisical(?) offense is unacceptable.

How many more games does anyone think we would have won if not for this offense defense BS? I say at least 2.

We re afraid to have offense. We re afraid to have offense.

Exactly Doc, that's why it kills me when folks attack Kendall for going to the basket and being a so called "ball hog". Who the hell else is going to shoot. After 30 seconds of the Harlem Globe Trotter musical chair routine, someone has to throw up some brick before the music stops. KO is the only one on the floor that is offensive minded at all times. SDJ, TA and Cline are learning, but too late for this year.

anybody have access to Pomeroy's offensive efficiency stats? would like to know where we stand. I don't think we're nearly as bad offensively as some think.

the only number which really means anything to the bottom line is wins. we don't get it done in the win column and we have to change that number or nothing else will happen for us.

If anyone we should burn Friendshuh's redshirt right? I mean why would Diekvoss take Zo's minutes Friendshuh is a big guy that could step in if we are really gonna go all out for the A-10 tourney/NIT.

Friendshuh is still hurt (medical redshirt, probably would have still been a redshirt even if he was healthy), he tore his ACL in November. I believe at this point he is physically unable to play, and will be unable to play this season.

Don't want to sound like a Debbie Downer, but it is so discouraging to get a player in ( male or female) and right off the bat they do serious damage to their knee like a ACL. PF will not be himself 100% till probably around his second year of play. Then
you question how strong that knee will be? Will he have to wear a brace all the time or just a knee sleeve? What will it do to his movement and his jumping ability?

Look at Olivia Healey, after ACL, she has come back simply cause she is so hard nosed, but she is slower, not as mobile and has to wear a brace. But she is so skilled that she makes up for it, but is not as quick as she was. Now she has another knee injury. Okouro is still tough after her ACL but she does not have the hops she had before as she could dunk off a running start.

In basketball ACLs have such a prolonged effect on a players ability to perform at their former level. I hope Paul works hard and has some good healing ability in his gene pool.

I don't see a lot of time for PF next year as ANO, Cline, TA, and MW all most likely in front of him in our front court rotation. Could be a good thing in his long term recovery from this injury.

I think ACL injuries are more of an issue with female athletes than males.

Females are more prone to tearing ACL's in the first place and their prognoses for 100% recovery are often times not as good as their male counterparts.

First of all, females generally don't have the same strength in their knee stabilizing muscles (vastus medialis and the other quad muscles) as males do, which makes them more vulnerable to ACL and PCL tears. Plus the "notch" inside the knee joint where the ligaments attach is narrower in females, so there is less area where the ligaments attach. And there are the wider hips that females tend to have (Q angle) that places the knee joint at a more vulnerable angle than the typical male knee. All of these factors also complicate female knee injury/surgery recovery.

I read one time that on a D1 women's soccer team a few years back that 9 of the 25 players on the team were out with PCL tears at the same time. I also saw a picture last week of the UCONN women's basketball players sitting on the bench while they announced Coach Geno winning his 900th game. There were clear arthroscopic and/or surgical scars on just about every knee that wasn't covered by a brace.

I think more males make complete recoveries than females do from these major knee injuries, so perhaps it's not fair to look at the women's team as a yardstick for PF's recovery prognosis. Dan Geriot seemed to make a full recovery after his torn ACL, and it was his added bulk that slowed him down the next year more than the knee injury.

The reason I know all of this stuff is I have a relative who is a retired orthopedic surgeon who used to be the team doctor for GWU's men's and women's hoops teams many years ago.

Actually, playing Chandler now, might not be that bad a decision. It all depends on whether Alonzo, is going to return, anytime soon. Burning Chandler's redshirt, is not so harmful, as he'd probably not have played much anyway. Next year, he has a ton of players ahead of him. So play him now, and redshirt him next year, when we have even more forwards. Heck, he might have made a difference tonight.

IMO Diekvoss has only TA and Cline ahead of him. Everyone else's job is totally up for grabs, even SDJ.

SpiderK, Diekvoss, doesn't have the size to play Terry or TJ's position, he would be contesting Trey or Deion, for playing time.

Love ya buddy but I've got to disagree. You would be trading a full season as a 22 year old for a fifth of a season as an 18 year old. This year is toast, so what would be the benefit to play him now?
