The new rule changes have had a big impact on scoring in college basketball. Nationally teams are now getting more possessions every game and are scoring more efficiently with their possessions:
National % Tempo Increase: 5.4%
National % Efficiency Increase: 3.1%
National % Scoring Increase: 8.6%
Richmond has seen increases in our stats too, but they are much larger than the national increases:
Richmond % Tempo Increase: 16.0% (11.8% adjusted for competition)
Richmond % Offensive Efficiency Increase: 13.6% (4.9% adjusted for competition)
Richmond % Defensive Efficiency Increase: 14.5% (7.1% adjusted for competition)
Our tempo has increased by 2 to 3 times the national average and is the biggest contributing factor to increased scoring on offense and defense for Richmond this year. Our offensive efficiency has also increased, but when adjusted for competition it has only increased slightly more than the national average. Our defense efficiency has increased (gotten worse) and when adjusted for competition it has changed by over 2 times the national average.
We have played a decent number of games, half of which were against very good competition. At this point we have a reasonable amount of data to learn from. Our increase in scoring is much greater than the national increase, and this is because we are playing much faster. Our increase in tempo is 2 or 3 times the national increase, so it is due to much more than just the rule changes. Our increase in offensive efficiency is mostly due to the rule changes as well, but our defensive efficiency has suffered much more than our offensive efficiency has improved. We are worse on defense this year and it cannot be explained solely with the rule changes. If Mooney can get the team playing defense like we were last year we will be a much better team.
