Coaching incompetence

This year things have gone badly. The last two years they hadn’t. But I’m far more depressed about those that
continue to be negative on this site.
What’re you talking about? Two years ago we had a losing season.

This is one of our many problems, fans are so conditioned to expect mediocre results that they forget entire losing seasons.

We won the tournament in 2022 and the conference last year. Isn’t that correct?

And Mooney lead them to the best single season record in the schools history. Isn’t
that correct?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, a blind squirrel and a broken clock. How do you explain away the consistency of the failures the rest of the seasons? How about the Providence game? Out coached? We had some really good players in his tenure and he was unable to coach them into the NCAA tournament. Any explanation for this consistency?

We were 15-18 and 7-11 in the A10 in the 2022-2023 season. We were swept by VCU that year.

And in the good year (after cutting down the nets) - got crushed in the last regular season game, got bounced from the a10 tournament in our first game as the 1 seed, and a 16 point loss in the NIT

Odd years (defined by Year in March) have not done well recently.
2019, 2021, 2023, 2025.

Even has done better. 2020, 2022, 2024.

No, that’s not correct.

2021-2022 - NCAA tournament
2022-2023 - 15-18 losing season
2023-2024 - 23-10 conference season champs
2024-2025 - 10-18 losing season

You are going back three years, not two.

Tbone you just proved what I said. The tournament was in 2022.

For the rest of you, if CM is fired, I won’t lose any sleep. If he’s not fired
only you all will lose sleep trying to figure out “how can this be?”

Let it play out before you post your remarks.

Tbone just proved that the last two seasons ended in March 2022 and March 2024?
Is he a quantum scientist?

Using end of season as the year, with a modest goal of 20 wins in 32.25 games by May 1. That would be a winning percentage of .620.
The 3 Mooney eras that I see are (D1 only):

2006 .433
2007 .267
2008 .516
2009 .556
2010 .743
2011 .784

2012 .500
2013 .559
2014 .576
2015 .600
2016 .500
2017 .629
2018 .375

2019 .394
2020 .774
2021 .591
2022 .649
2023 .455
2024 .697
2025 .308

And I keep reading the title of this thread wrong.
As if someone is coaching the topic of incompetence…

Annap, it’s ok to simply admit you didn’t have your facts right. Your statement was “This year things have gone badly. The last two years they hadn’t.” I provided a season by season accounting that we had one decent year and one really poor year in the last two years. The tournament season in 2022 was a season/year before that.

Are you denying that there was an entire losing season in that two year timeframe? If so, I can’t help you and you might want to seek advice from your local neurologist.

If someone is trying to rationalize something (example - the success of CM’s program), they are going to find a way to slice and dice or justify. It would be easier to admit that you’re with Moon come high or hell water. That’s the bottom line. The tenure at UR is truly mediocrity, and there enough stats and facts that it’s hard to dispute that. But no doubt, if you’re an enabler you probably always will be. Capitulation is a hard thing to overcome just as 55 pct - the long term ceiling.

I saw my neurologist and she said “you have to find people with positive attitudes or you’re always
going to be depressed.”
So as I said-… if CM is fired, I won’t lose any sleep. If he’s not fired
only you all will lose sleep trying to figure out “how can this be?”

Four losing seasons in the last eight seasons. That's not normal for a coach in his 20th year at the same school. In fact, I dare anyone to find me another coach in Division 1 who you could say that about.

Seems to be acceptable for the powers that be at our school. For CM, it’s the UR Way. Stay tuned for next extension. Would thrill some.

Of course he wouldn't change course. He feels no urgency to fix things this year. "One of our starters got hurt, so we can just punt on the whole season with a built-in excuse." Meanwhile, we sucked with Hunt, too, so his absence is not the reason we have continued to suck.

Here's a quote from the article:

“You usually come back to, because since we’ve been together since May, we’ve been emphasizing certain things. We feel like we’re getting better at those things. You want to try to zoom out a little bit and say, ‘Well, is it this lineup? Should we do this differently?’” said Mooney, whose team on Tuesday night hosts VCU (22-5, 12-2), the A-10 leader. “You usually come back to, because since we’ve been together since May, we’ve been emphasizing certain things.

“We feel like we’re getting better at those things. Even though it’s been a grind and it’s taken us a long time to get there, we’re getting better at those things.”

Of course the only thing we have actually gotten better at recently is playing worse teams. But I think that ended this weekend.

had to ask Chat what the above means - "The quote from Coach Mooney emphasizes the importance of consistency and long-term improvement in his team's performance. He acknowledges that since May, they have been focusing on specific aspects of their game and feel they are making progress, even though the process has been challenging and time-consuming. While there may be moments of questioning different strategies or lineups, they ultimately return to their core principles, believing that their emphasis on key areas is yielding results."

The season is pretty much over but hey I feel like we are maybe sorta kinda starting to get better at some things that we have been emphasizing the past year.

maybe JOC should run Mooney's interviews through Chat and just print that.

this loss shouldn't surprise anyone. SJU is very good and a contender. their big 3 are better than anyone we have.
but if you told me we'd hit all our foul shots, shoot 42% from 3, have only 7 turnovers and give up only 3 (!) offensive rebounds ... I'd have bet we'd at least be competitive.

I can't figure out how to paste the shot chart, but they dominated offensively at the rim and from 3 while we took and missed a ton of those mid range 2's analytics tells you to avoid.

1. After reading it, I will try and give Mooney some benefit of the doubt here. I don't think he was suggesting that he is incapable of changing, but sharing that he thinks the issue is more a problem of execution than the system itself. It's like saying before buying new clubs because every shot is sliced, see if the issue is with the mechanics of the swing. We have had success under this basketball system before, so he knows it can be done (just not as often as many would like). Perhaps we don't have the personnel who is able to execute it as well, which still falls on the coach to a significant extent since Mooney is the one recruiting, developing, and coaching them during games.

2. With that said from point one, this is the second time in as many weeks where I will say, why on earth is this article being posted? A little tone deaf in my opinion to make comments about trying to "stick to your guns" in a year where we have not won 10 D1 games, nearing March. Say that you're changing something. Point out the changes in line-ups more as an effort to change, say you're going to wear difference socks to the games, something! It doesn't have to be a 180 degree opposite approach to what the coaching philosophy is, but modifying/adjusting in some manner when results aren't going your way - even if its execution based - is something good coaches do. For instance, when we weren't making as many 3's against Saint Louis, Roussell changed the offensive plan to focus more on driving to the basket. Even when execution of principles aren't working, there are still ways to adapt to the situation.

One of the comparison I like to make is St. Mary's. Because I get laughed at to try to use Gonzaga. We'll in the same conferncebu have lil ol St. Mary's. Lose two best players due to NIL. No STUPID response like like Mooney that it's something we are looking into, whilst everyone else is adjusting. St Mary's just keeps winning.

Bennett is a HEAD COACH. I don't know what the hell our guy is supposed to be.

Exactly. I mean if you've been working on this stuff "since May" and it is still hot garbage, how much longer do you propose to work on it, Coach? How long does he think the season lasts? Half these guys will be on a different team in two months, and then he'll start working on the same stuff with new players in May. Why should we have any confidence that it will work next time?

And when it doesn't work next time, what will he do differently? Here we have the answer: Absolutely nothing.
