CAA Football notes: Conference seeking TV/digital partners for upcoming football season

Seeking TV/digital partners

There aren't many things more important than exposure for an FCS league. Awareness helps recruiting, and overall support. TV is a key piece, and CAA Football is looking for a partner, or partners, this season and beyond.

The league had a five-year deal with CSN. That expired following last season. The three-year agreement with the American Sports Network also expired. What replaces those two, which together aired about 20 games involving league teams in 2016, could be a TV package, a digital package, or a combination.

"We're working diligently on that right now," CAA Commissioner Joe D'Antonio said Tuesday. "Nothing that I can give you by way of information, but suffice it to say that there will be some things we'll be able to talk about soon."

The CAA Football spring meetings will be held May 30-31 at Kiawah Island, S.C., and the TV topic is high on the agenda. Last season, James Madison, Richmond and William & Mary were on TV about five times each.

Seems like sort of a late hour to be figuring this out, no?

Yes and Yes to DT.It was my reason for posting. Not sure that CAA personnel have enough internal horsepower.Shoulda outsourced TV deal to real experts.D'Antonio comes directly from Big East where football broke off some 4-5 years ago.

Campus Insiders, here we come.

Bingo.

"On April 13, 2017, Sinclair officially announced that ASN would be re-launched later in the year as part of a joint venture with Silver Chalice (owner of Campus Insiders) and its online sports video service 120 Sports. The new operation will be operated as linear and digital offerings; the linear service would utilize the syndication and broadcast network built out for ASN, while the digital platform will stream full-time online and through Twitter. 120 Sports will provide original studio and long-form programming to the venture. On May 1, 2017, it was announced that the new joint venture would be known as Stadium."

MO, you are right on the money. maybe they have been trying but just no takers so far, thus this digital thinking. would rather be on the beach or bike trails on kiawah than discussing digital tv. the power 5 conferences are the 500lb gorilla in the room and they suck all of the money out of these networks. would be interesting to see if any of the wee fbs conferences are struggling to get air time as well. this is all leading somewhere, stay tuned.

Anything on the Sammy State game tv yet?
That game should be on ESPN. The first fcs game of the year is usually a week before FBS starts and they put those games on ESPN. This past year it was NDSU and Charlestown southern. I'm probably going to the game so I can visit the Samh Houston chapter of my fraternity.

That's not our game. We're a Thursday night game along with lots of others on 8/31.

The big FCS Kickoff game on ESPN is on Saturday 8/26 and it's Chatty vs. Jacksonville State.

Well looks like I'm not going if it's on a Thursday night.

Thanks for the update. Seems late in the preseason to still have nothing announced. If memory serves, we usually know most game times in the schedule by now. I'm assuming the holdup in releasing game times is a set TV contract.

Are the festivities streaming live on our new CAA media partner, MySpace?

CAA Commish hired this guy from Bizon of NDSU as the CAA Football Commissioner.

You get what you pay for....

D'Antonio speak on June 12,2016 to RTD prior to 7/1/16 start of reign.

"You have said that you intend to grow the CAA Football brand. How will that happen?

One of the things I am planning on doing and something I spoke to the coaches about at our last meeting is we’re going to be hiring an associate commissioner for football who is going to be focused on football endeavors 24/7, 365. Obviously that person will report to me and I’ll be heavily involved. … Hopefully, that will almost inherently allow us grow the brand and concentrate on making sure that we are where we need to be with football. That person hasn’t been identified yet. We will be conducting a search to identify the proper person for that job."

---------------------

As an associate member our leverage is next to zero.CAA has no cache with ESPN or NBC(ComcastSportNet).Maybe time for CAA football to move back to A10.Maybe individual
teams should cut deals with Amazon/Hulu.

You're right, we have no leverage but have to think full members also deserve better, especially with one of them being defending national champion. This just comes across as some real Mickey mouse stuff.

Just the thought of Jmu being defending NC makes me want to run to the bathroom and bend over the porcelin goddess!

What a childish remark. JMU deserved their championship as did Richmond when we won it
a few years ago.
No one appreciates beating JMU more than me; but ridiculing their championship makes us
look like poor losers.

Jmuers have ridiculed our NC for years! Several Jmuers claim they should have won the 2008 NC, not UR. Some JMU Dillweeds claim we "stole" their championship trophy!

jmu as much as I hate them and their fan base deserved the national title last year. They went out and dominated everyone in the playoffs and earned it. That being said I truly believe that if we had a fully healthy roster or really even just Lauletta, David Jones, the two other running backs and a few other defensive guys that we were the best team in fcs football. It's a shame that couldn't have happened by that is what this year is for, to take what is ours and stop at nothing to make that happen. I love our rivalry with jmu and really hope they don't move up to the FBS. We need them and they need us, we make each other better because of the competitiveness of that game and the true burning hatred. That is what a rivalry is supposed to be. We for sure have the best football rivalry in the state.

I agree with you! The state media and average fan would probably argue the #1 rivalry is VT vs UVA. I would submit as far as football is concerned, the #1 rivalry is UR vs JMU. VT simply dominates UVA in football. Kind of (sorry to admit) like our basketball rivalry with VCU.
