Blake Francis injury status

It's really a simple question. Only irritating because you choose it to be I guess. It's not my fault you couldn't back up what you said. I'm not saying there aren't or weren't any. I just didn't know of them, so I was asking who they were? Seems like a pretty reasonable question. It's not like regular recruiting where there are hundreds or even thousands of bigs out there and you need to go get one. Were there really so many grad transfer bigs available that we should have easily gotten one? When we had everyone coming back? Come on.
I removed my apparently petty post. Of note, I never said these guys had to be grad transfers, I think you’re conflating my statement with others.

Apparently you believe we can’t get a competent defensive forward to come to UR in spite of empirical “back up” (which I did provide) that we have recruited those guys here previously. They exist, we all know they exist. And they’re easier to find than skilled forwards as you’ve fairly pointed out before.

It can be done. We’ve actually done it before.

Of course I think we can get a defensive forward here. We have some good defensive guys now. Not sure why you think I would believe otherwise. The discussion was about a grad transfer this year. That was what I replied about, and then what you replied about to me.

Francis injury timetable is 4-6 weeks.

4 weeks would put his probably earliest possible return as the Feb 15th, VCU game. Have to think he is gonna be pushing to play in that one.

6 weeks would put his return at Feb. 29 UMass game. If he returned then, he would get to play 3 more A-10 games before the tourney which should allow him to get back into game shape before the A-10 tourney.

Hoping for the earlier return and quick healing.

Hmmm. Is there only 1 transfer to an A-10 school?

My point is to support the claim that there are options. Here are some specifics and this was a quick look on 1 site. I would imagine that our staff can and would do a more in depth look into these and many more players.

I count two. Dayton and LaSalle
My point was that only one big transferred TO an A-10 school.
This guy transferred from Florida to Dayton.
Chase Johnson - 6’9” - Florida to Dayton
It looks like this guy transferred from LaSalle to CSN
Miles Brookins - 6’10” - La Salle to CSN

First PF on the list?

This is a crazy debate. We have as much depth as we have had in a long time, and we are really complaining about a 13th scholarship? We had a solid starting five coming into this year, and enough depth to play four or five off the bench. Out of all the grad transfers listed above, how many went to a situation like that? I would think most of the good ones are transferring for playing time and care about playing time. The not-so-good ones, why do we really care about anyway?

I’m happy with the team. You asked for real examples. Just answering your call.

how many of these guys do you want getting time over Sal?
How many do you want getting time over Kulju?

How many would want to compete with him for minutes?

Unused scholarships are never a positive, but certainly far from devastating this year.

Well, except...Blackshear wanted to come here but 4700 told him we couldn’t find any minutes...
(To be clear, that is a joke...)

I just don't think we were an attractive spot for a good grad transfer big. one like the LaSalle kid is not going to help. he's worse than the grad transfers we've gotten that some here complained relentlessly about.

most grad transfers are either looking to play a lot because they weren't, or are looking to go to the highest level they can to experience that.

a small school program coming off 20 loss seasons and with tough to beat out front court talent isn't very attractive unless it's your best offer. and for the few that grad transfer for actual grad school ... that's not our strength.

Alright Killer you are "killing me" with laughter - keep the comments coming........................give you props for a sense of humor................often sorely needed on this sometimes "all too serious" message board.............

I mean according to his defenders, you only go 10 deep anyway, so why not just 10. Who really needs guys in the program to develop or to step in for more minutes if someone gets injured. Because no players ever get hurt during the course of a season.

Grad transfer would have helped as would another big man in the program to develop so we can sustain a high level of play, when best class ever graduates.

jeez, does everything have to be about defending Mooney or criticizing him?

my thoughts on this have nothing to do with Mooney. we had 12 in the program and Isaiah Wilson coming by himself in the next class with nobody graduating. yes, we could take a grad transfer if we found one we thought could help and who also wanted to be here. we didn't find that guy. we're not the only team to not fill a 13th spot. for all the legitimate reasons to be on Mooney, this shouldn't even be on the radar.

Mooney made this bed the last 8 years unfortunately that is the state we are in on spidernation.com. I think if we can make NCAA's in 2022 or 2023 it will subside a little bit. If he makes it this year or next and then goes into his 8 year slumber again - it will be very testy on here, and I predict we will have a new poster named VT9200 join the board in 2029. Fan1 will retire from moderation and pass the torch to someone to be named, and 05 will rule with an iron fist.

Please correct me if I'm wrong (and I know you will).....but Wasn't Blake's late game injury yet another example of needlessly leaving your starters in after the game is out of reach? I believe we were down by 15 or 16 points with under 2 minutes to go. I know that I discussed this after both Golden and Gilyard both sustained needless injuries late in blowout games. Do we never learn our lessons?

Looks like the injury happened with 2:00 left and us down 11. Plus we had ball so I would say we were still in striking distance.

And the Dude from Dayton dropped out.

Said it before, say it again, Blake's offense missed isn't close to the end of the world. This team has no DTs or TDs or a OmarS playing. Couldn't partake in watching but box tells me once again Mooney's team adjusted well offensively without Blake. Different approach than against Davidson.

UR averages 39% 3PTA a game, tonight the 14 equaled 29%. GM gives up 2PT baskets and GG and Co. must have took advantage of it? And when you go inside, you shoot FTs for the most part. I count 33 Spiders FTA which outside of Maryland's 38 is the most given up GM. Their MO is not letting their opponents get to the line. Plus other games 7, 5, 8 FTA and Bonny only went 3-3.

So what ever we want to say about Mooney not doing this or not doing that, he is the coach so I have to assume he directed the team on pounding it inside. So I give him much kudos for that. Yes I get upset GG a few/some/plenty of times, but he's 6-10 255 so I don't expect a ballerina out there.

You know someone should start a thread about what starter(s) of the 5 would be the easiest to replace when going down with an injury for say 4-6 weeks. Big time Blake fans probably won't agree with my thoughts.

Interesting take Jersey. Watching the games on tv Iwas not as huge a Blake fan as most, but watching the game in person in URI I thought he played great. Big, timely shots and really good D on Rhodys guards. We did adapt well last two games without him, but think we need top notch Blake to beat the VCUs and Dayton. I think we can win those games but would feel more confident with Blake.

23, not looking to downgrade what Blake brings to the table at all. See my post in another thread stating he's the guy to have the ball for that end of game win/lose shot. More so than SDJ when Mooney went to him. Just that JG and GG IMO are no brainers that couldn't be lost for 4-6 without affecting the Spiders more.

If Burton wasn't stepping up like he has, might put Cayo in there also. It's has most to do with being a numbers game. Not much inside presence but Mooney has plenty of it outside. Of course if we had a grad transfer or soph big (since UR has no religious affiliation, please don't say Grace at my table here) who could play physical D/rebound/defend the rim GG's presence wouldn't be a necessity.

And when you go inside, you shoot FTs for the most part. I count 33 Spiders FTA

The high FT count was more a product of Mason fouling at the end to try to get back into the game. We shot 15 free throws in the last 2 minutes (and made most of them).

But yes Grant did have his way on the inside tonight, able to back his man down almost every time we were able to get it to him on the block.

Guess watching the game would have helped me out? My "for the most part" wasn't today. LOL That being said the Spiders did at least shoot less 3s. Thank you for the info GoSGo!
