Blake Francis injury status

I have a feeling if a kid like Blake Francis can play at all he will find a way to be out there with his team. That kid is a competitor.

agreed. He’s tough. Not trying to minimize his injury I just have feeling he’ll be back much sooner than expected. we r supposed to not be negative on here, right?

Hopefully I didn’t moosh it & make him get a bad diagnosis in next day or so. U would think an athletic program like ours can get him into see a specialist a little sooner, usually there r agreements for that.

I mentioned in other thread briefly but this is the risk when u don’t fill out your ships. 1 less than max, 1 taken by transfer (that’s ok), 1 used on Verbinskis which was pretty obv to all as a non factor & possible transfer. Now w Blake out u have 9 scholarship guys. What’s done is done but we need better foresight & roster management. Injuries r way of life. Grad transfer was low risk good upside on a 1 year deal.

So Blake pretty please w cherry on top get well soon!

What grad transfer did u want? In the other thread, you said you wanted a Garrett type for defense, as if that is so easy to find. But, that being said, how would a Garrett type on defense make up for Blake's injury anyway?

Sorry, it just seems like you are all over the place venting about a grad transfer, and hard to understand the venting when we still go 9 deep even after Blake's injury. Just wondering what grad transfer would have looked at our situation and been thrilled with being part of a likely 10 or 11 man rotation had he come here?

Many types of injuries require waiting a few days before you truly examine, have to get rid of some swelling etc to have a clear image -- I assume this was that type injury

We are not deep at the 4/5 spots. It’s not unrealistic to think CM can sell a good defensive big to come be part of a potential tournament team this year.

I get your logic that big guys don’t grow on trees, but it’s equally irrational to think that there are no big guys out there who both fit our need and we could offer them PT.

Talked about this plenty of times in summer VT. No revisionist here. Mooney was & has been open to it, we were linked w guy doing well at Belmont. Gotta be aggressive and get on it earlier. Staff hasn’t figured it out yet. The specifics r their job.

Venting. Yes that’s what we do here. Except for u who does whining.

Blake out 4-6 weeks with sternum fracture. Unfortunate but opportunity for guys to get minutes to help come tourney time.

He’ll be back in 4. JOC salty in his tweets after he got less info than bob black.

No excuses Ncaa or bust.

Hope he recovers quickly and when he is back, the pain is not too bad and he can round into shape quickly. He is obviously critical to our chances. Yes, he can shoot us out of a game once in a while, but too have any chance against our top opponents, we need him to shoot us into a game. This makes the Dayton game much more difficult. Out for 1st VCU game, and likely/possibly the 2nd? Tough news for the team and our chances this morning. Really think Grant needs to become a bigger threat inside. I like Woj and Goose, but I don't think either can be as dynamic a shot maker - if Grant can force more attention it will free up some shots for those two.

1/25 Dayton
1/28 @ VCU
2/15 VCU
2/22 @ SBU
3/6 @ Duquesne

It would be great to have him for more of these games, but full strength for the last one & Brooklyn certainly helps.

speaking of history...our grad school denied entry to a college graduate. He ended up at Xavier and almost led them to the Final 4.

Do you know if you have been out of college for 5 years and want to go to the UR Night school (or whatever it is called which includes the grad programs) your GPA doesn't matter.

That makes us the only school in the country to deny admission to a school that has a beer making class.

Get well soon, Blake! In the meantime, Gilyard can get back to scoring more like he has in the past, Goose can lock down as a defender for more minutes per game and give us a slashing scoring option, and Woj can knock down a couple threes a game. That should make up the difference. Our depth takes a little hit, but I think we're still in great shape.

ESPN reports 4-6 weeks out for Blake

Yep, I’m not counting on having him back. If he comes back, it’s a very nice bonus. But we shouldn’t suffer too much, IMO.

Agree. Ridiculous. Should never happen.

Makes u wonder how we got in Jordan Madrid who went to like 4 schools including I think a juco.

Anyway that fiasco didn’t stop us from running in the grad market & shows we can get the Malcolm Bernard’s to agree to come here.

Will miss Blake - when the trifecta of Gilyard, Blake, and Sherod are raining threes we do very well. Expect Gilyard to continue to step up as he did against Davidson .....the dynamic is different with Blake out as Gilyard deferred at times to Blake...but there is the factor of Gilyard spending more time on the court without a break....... also Gustavson brings a different dynamic than Blake particularly on defense...fortunately this year we are deep enough that with Blake out we should be able to continue to do well. Think also Sherod will take more three point shots with Blake out...
Plus there is Wojcik factor - he can get on three point runs............

Blake’s been out what 5 days already. Got to count those! So he’s back in roughly 3 weeks. Eta target Feb 8. That’s fordham so maybe we hold him to next game.

We’ll be ok in meantime as long as Mooney realizes Burton has to play lot more mins. With Goose getting 35 last game we’re good there as he ate up Francis minutes.

Dig deep Spiders here we go.

Burton positioning and defense is great to see - brings dynamic of "hard nose defense" in the sense of not being pushed out of the way ....something we have needed................

I was just asking who these bigs were though? Pretty easy to just say we should land a guy. But who is this guy we were supposed to land?

Tyler Scanlon is starting for Belmont and averaging 30 minutes a game. There were a lot of power schools after him also, and like with most grad transfers, he chose a school that will give him a lot of playing time. Belmont lost two key starters. We lost none. Do you think he would be be starting for us and playing 30 minutes a game?

This is an incredibly irritating argument you regularly use. Your question falls into one of two possibilities: 1) Are you suggesting that there are no decent quality big guys who might be under-appreciated because their primary skill is defense? 2) Or are you suggesting that somehow my personal ability to specify these individuals is the linchpin to us going out and pursuing them?

We have an entire coaching staff and whatever consultants and services are out there to identify guys who fit our needs. Right now, we are either not identifying these as needs or are unable to fill them. But let's be clear, these players exist and are not unreachable, otherwise we would have never gotten a Darius Garrett/Gaston Moliva/<Insert Player Name Here>.

It's really a simple question. Only irritating because you choose it to be I guess. It's not my fault you couldn't back up what you said. I'm not saying there aren't or weren't any. I just didn't know of them, so I was asking who they were? Seems like a pretty reasonable question. It's not like regular recruiting where there are hundreds or even thousands of bigs out there and you need to go get one. Were there really so many grad transfer bigs available that we should have easily gotten one? When we had everyone coming back? Come on.

20+ yes. It’s not about Scanlon specifically anyway. U know that. I brought him up only as example that Mooney was indeed interested in adding a grad transfer. Identifying, recruiting & closing is on him and the staff. I guess we have to agree to disagree.

Cool. All good. I'm just really happy with the roster right now. Sure, every roster can be improved,, and no question we could have used some grad transfers in the past. But, this year when we had so many quality guys back, it didn't seem like a really good fit for a grad transfer. That's all. But, like you said, we can agree to disagree.

Fact is we r down to 9 healthy & active ships. The route we took w ships was risky & lot of us saw it coming. I like our guys too but I’d even take Noah Yates but our AD totally miscalculated his eligibility.

Get well soon Blake.

But put Burton on the court more frequently and we good.

I don't think Noah would get very much playing time this year. How many teams worry about playing more than nine guys anyway?

Most teams have guys at the end of the bench that never see the court. Why worry about that? Does it matter how many ships we have right now if we have have a pretty deep roster? That's the important thing. And, we have Crabtree and Wilson coming in next year, so we have 10 guys who are playing this year and will have possibly 12 who can all play next year. How could that be called a scholarship problem?

Speaking of Crabtree, he (I think it was him) looked to be on crutches at the SLU game, what's up there?
