Assistant Coaches

Correction. Wood is the LB coach. We need a WR coach. Not sure where the other slot fits in. Rocco had 2 LB coaches.

I think I read that base D alignment is 4-2-5 so probably this staff will have just one LB coach. I am assuming OC will coach QBs. Not sure if DC will also handle a position group, but he played DB at W&M. Legg and West are both involved there.

I read about all of UD's new staff on their website and the more I read the more disgusted I become. It just takes me back to realizing that we really just let an outstanding staff leave for very stupid reasons and to an in conference opponent. I try to be positive in thinking that Huesman and his staff will keep us where we are or even take us to a new level but right now I just can't get out the horrible taste of losing our previous staff to an in conference opponent. UD got a great group of coaches. Who knows what will happen now...

yep, particularly with vt boy, his dad would shoot him if he saw his posts, on the other sideline

Some of the key assistants we lost will hurt us bad as well. Losing long time guys like Polin and Stewart really sucks. So does losing our best recruiter in mines.

VT, we recruited great players long before those guys were here. We will do it again. When you get a bit more "seasoned", as many of us on this board are, you will realize these things are going to happen. It's not worth getting your skivvies in a bunch.

I agree with you. We have the ability to keep this thing rolling but the next couple months are crucial with recruiting. We need to keep as many committed players as possible and find ways to bring in more signees, whether that be from UTC's signees or new finds by the new staff. We need all the good players we can get. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Stewart and Poling have been here since at least the championship season and losing them will be really tough.

Once upon a time, we lost Dave Clawson, Latrell Scott, Mike Faragalli, Russ Huesman and Mark Carney during a two-year period. Shockingly, the world kept turning and we continued to get better as a program.

Think Coach Huesman could very well be an upgrade for us at head coach. Look at what he did at Chatty with limited resources compared to what he will have here. As far as assistant coaches, yea, we lost some good ones. But we retained Sparkey Woods and RH brought in some assistant coaches that helped him build the Mocs program and coaches he is comfortable with. I think all this turned out really well for Spider Football. Change isn't always bad. We now have a proven winner in RH who knows UR and Spider Football and wants to be here.

Some of these guys may turn out to be better coaches. I really like the hire, Russ is one we have liked for a long time.

Kind of hard to be when we lost the staff that we just lost and they will be on the opposite sideline from us.
You ever stop to think that when it's all over that they might think they're on the wrong sideline? I'm guessing that most left because there were no guarantees they would be retained here. My guess Rocco looked out for himself first.

the only thing that does bother me is that rocco will recruit va very hard from up there, something they have not done. it will get more competitive in va.

Huesman is a great hire. Rocco was as well. Regret that Rocco's parting was less than amicable by both parties. Messy.

Huesman will be great, but we all should be realistic and expect a hiccup . Change is rarely totally seamless.

I agree with this but there are plenty of players to go around. We'll probably be mining TN, GA and other southeastern states more, just because of this staff's experience.

A good number of our best players have come out of GA. Tennessee has some great talent as well. Plus if from Va. do you want to play for a winner in Va or ship off to Newark, De.? Personally I think DR will work a lot in Pa. His old stomping grounds and UDs stomping grounds.

We may have a blip, and may not, this one year. It sometimes happens when you have a change over in staff. But look at that guys on the staff Russ put together, plenty of VA connections. We'll have plenty of VA connections to work with,

I know stewart left bc gill couldn't promise him the new coach would retain him. I'm sure others were in the same boat. A bird in the hand......

Idk I think Huesman would've kept Stewart because he was here when Huesman was last here, Polin too.

I don't disagree. I'm just telling u what stewart told me when I sat in his living room last week. He has two children and a wife to worry about....you can't make decisions based on what ifs when you have responsibilities.

I'll take your word for it. Coach Stewart was a great guy and I know the players loved him, really hate to see him go.

I also hope they continue to recruit Florida even though it just got a lot tougher with butch Davis and lane kiffen taking over lower FBS programs that richmond could compete against recruiting wise in the past
Also any word on who is replacing Carl kotz? He was very well respected and liked by the team ?
Justin wood wasn't mentioned in recent articles but looks like he is on board for linebackers so I think it's down to a wide receiver/ TE coach that's left?
I do think that this will be a down recruiting class in terms of numbers anyway as a product of the change but I don't see short term effect by it

I will say that Gill did the right thing. It's up to the coach not the AD to name that position. The only thing that stands out to me is why did coach Stew have to make that decision before Huesman could even offer him? Only scenario I can figure is that Rocco gave him an exploding offer to force his hand. If that's the case, that is a real classless move.

Stop calling Rocco classless. We all know why he left and it was because of a real s***head of an AD. He wanted to stay and our AD didn't want to keep him.

I agree with your point...we and i didn't discuss that...I can only surmise that rocco definitely put some pressure on him..
I know it was a tremendous offer...

VT -- only a handful know for sure, but I think you are wrong. I think Rocco wanted out. The only way he would have stayed would be to give him everything he wanted, and give it right then. No school should act that way.

I recall talking to him after the W&M game -- I told a friend he was gone.

urfan, I agree. We will never know what went on behind the scenes but it is pretty clear to me that Rocco made his decision to leave well before the play-offs started. If he doesn't want to be at UR, then I don't want him at UR. I think that we are in great shape with Huesman at the helm and I look forward to continued success. The cupboard is not only not empty, it is chock full of really good players and I anticipate us being in the play-offs next year. A win over Delaware would be sweet as well.

Well the problem is that our athletic department will never give the coach anything and Rocco figured that out. If your AD treats you like a joke than treat him like a joke and that's what Rocco did. We won't be able to compete if we don't give our staff the tools they need to succeed.

Got any hard evidence to prove it?

Rocco acting insubordinate on the way out I would say qualifies as classless. At that point there was no reckoning. Wouldn't of blamed KG if he pulled a Bo Schembechler and canned him after that "vision" press conference. Personally know Rocco and think highly of his coaching abilities but he looks like Benedict Arnold compared to Mike London how he left.

Notice how Gill had the class to wish Rocco well in his press conference? Meanwhile Rocco is throwing our admin under the bus providing only one side of the story on the way out the door all while filming a promo shoot with a blue and gold tie for his next school.

Rocco is gone and not coming back. While Rocco was playing this crap out through the media Gill was doing his job and securing our next head coach who is one HELL of a coach and was a major part of national championship team here. Can't say that about Rocco.

Time to move on....

Gill is a pushover and just says what he needs to say and tries not to hurt anyone's feelings, of course he wished Rocco well. Rocco said what he believes to be true and is true of the program. He loves those kids and hates to see the administration not care about giving them what they need to succeed. He tried to stand up for what's right and when he realized he wasn't going to win he left and I would've too if I was in his position. I won't even give Gill credit for hiring Huesman and I am yet to be sold on Huesman as a coach.

Tired of reading your same old crap. I'm hitting the ignore button but before I do I'll suggest that you take your Rocco worship to the Chickens board. Rocco is yesterday's news. Can't wait to stick it to him on the football field where it will hurt the most. Go away.

Cmon VT...I asked for proof and evidence not how you feel. Put up or shutup. Feels does not equal reals. None of us were flies on the wall in those conversations and we only ever heard one side of the story played through the media and of course promptly overreacted before gathering all the facts.

So Rocco gave up on his kids when he didn't get EVERYTHING he wanted?....He must of really loved them if he was willing to go to a conference rival and trash the school on the way out. While you have Kevin Johnson sacrificing a year of his eligibility to keep this team going you have this dude talking to Delaware, a conference rival none the less.

If you need convincing that Huesman is a good coach and will perform well here then you need to reevaluate what you look for in a successful coach. Guess how many playoff appearances Lord Rocco had before he got here with all the resources in the world at Jesus University in a crap conference? 0. I believe Huesman has had what 3-4 and a couple NFL players to boot? He also has some coaching coattails in Will Healy at Austin Peay. Rocco needed Richmond more then we needed him because we were in a relevant conference. Rocco did not when he arrived here.

Continuing the them of being real, we were not reeling when Rocco came here in terms of talent. We just needed a coach who uses Uber instead of drinks and drives. He deserves credit for rebuilding the program depth especially on the lines but when he came in there were still players left over from our National Title/Semifinal Team, it wasn't a Clawson like rebuild. The cupboard was not bare..

Ill take the coach that wants to be here. We won a NC before Rocco got here and we will win another one too. I will be fond of Rocco because we at least beat UVA in my lifetime, and for that, I am thankful. Wish him well but hes not a Spider anymore, Huesman is and he has all of my support!

It hasn't been easy and it won't be easy going forward but maybe we can recover and keep this great program we have rolling. I'll keep a positive attitude and hopefull Huesman changes my mind at about this time next year. We have plenty of talent and hopefully we can keep it all going into next year. I think we can all agree that it is kind of scary that we may have another monster on the rise in UD with the way that jmu is already dominating the league. The only reason I doubt Huesman is because I don't think the SoCon is a very good league and to be honest he didn't do too much in the playoffs once he got there. I really hope he proves me wrong.
