Assistant Coaches

Legg was on the UR staff when Huesman was the defensive coor . There was no doubt Legg was going to stay when Huesman was hired.

From what i hear, we are.
Trying to keep him? I've heard he's told people he's leaving, but that was right after Danny's announcement. What makes you think this? This would be a huge win for the program and the players. Any idea when a decision will be made?

Lots of misinformation floating around out there and I may be a source of some of it, but I understand we are still trying to keep Fontel here.

As of this AM....(from what I can see) these are the publicly confirmed staff changes
Former UTC coaches that have come over:
Russ Huesman -HC
Jeff Durden, Adam Braithwaite. (OC /D.C.)
Adam Ross, Carey Bailey Rod west - O &D line and secondary

Confirmed left from from staff:
Danny Rocco , John Garett, Carl Kotz and Blaine McCorkle
Manny Rojas posted he went to Delaware but shortly afterward had taken that down.

Nothing about Mines, Woods, Polin, Legg, Belin, Sintim or Cosh?
Nothing formally although Cosh leaving is assumed
Odds are mines and sintim go with Danny ... hope not but odds are they will
Woods and legg and belin I don't know but belin ussualy follows Danny

I hope they bring acouple younger guys to balance mines and sintim leaving
If they keep woods and legg it make it very senior staff in terms of experience and age

Agreed. Ross and West both appear to be young guys.

If my calculus is correct, we are needing a QB coach, a WR coach and a LB coach at this point.

Probably another D coach who works with lbs and some of the d line guys too, sintim type position
Also operations guy to replace Carl
I'll look up the UTC strength coach. I really liked coach Stewart too bad he is leaving. Hope they bring their equipment guy too

mines has multiple choices and would not surprise me to see him w/ garrett as the OC .he certainly knows the system. carl K is no loss. in the 3 time I spoke w/ him, he acted that he' s rushed/busy and had no time

I really like Sparky Woods and I am really grateful that we are able to keep him. I think that he will be a huge asset.
I would also love for us to find some way to keep Fontel Mines as well. He would probably do very well as an OC for Garrett, and I wish him the best, but he is also great with the recruits and players on a personal level. He is from Richmond so that may work to our advantage in keeping him at UR, though I would like to see him move up in the ranks.

Legg is a good guy, but he has struggled with Special Teams (except with respect to Trau's great performance). I am not sure whether the problem is on him or on the person who decides the personnel he can use. Either way, I hope that Russ is aware of our problem and takes the necessary steps to correct the deficiencies. I understand that he had a similar problem with Special Teams at UTC.

I know we will have some significant losses due to graduation, but Russ is inheriting a great group of talented kids, approximately 48-50 who were freshmen or sophomores this past year, and a ton of talent who will be seniors. With both Kyle, KJ, our WRs, TEs, and with Collins, Goodall, and Thompson at running back, we should have a potent offense again next year if we can replace the losses on our OL.

I agree with you. DR was old school and gave seniors preference in playing time. There are a lot of underclassmam ready to step in and I think next years team will be better , Coach Huesman your walking into a great situation, tweak don't change !

Do you know the name of the new strength coach? All the websites haven't updated and still showing Chris

I have no confirmation on this other than hearing "Russ was bringing his guy". Scott Brincks seems to be the name of the UTC strength coach.

Regarding Legg, he does have good recruiting connections in VA. Keeping Sparky and Legg herr definitely maximizes our chances of keeping the 2017 class in tact.

Before passing judgement on Carl Kotz you should talk to the players first. You felt he was rushed , that may be because he was. He was the administrative assistant, pro liason, Compliance liason, budget manager, fed the players, travel coordinator, etc. Most other programs have four people doing the jobs he did alone. Also, word has it that Mines and Sintim are both gone to Delaware.

Only good things to be said about Carl! Sad to see him going. Very well liked and respected by those who count.. the team

The offensive coordinator is almost always the QB coach. Streeter was, Fisher was, Garrett was, etc.

Belin is looking for a job he was not invited to UD and Richmond has a new one. Great Coach I hope everything works out for him. Most of the supporting cast took jobs doubling their current salary at UD.

I see some potential plus and some potential minus -- the real key IMHO is they are all qualified and they have the same vision of how to run the team

What are your thoughts so far on the staff?
. I know it's early but so far I gotta say more impressed with what we had versus what we are getting

I think your initial reaction is probably fair. Still having Sparky here is the big coup. Durden and Braithwaite are both solid coordinators. Let's see how it rounds out over the next week or two.

Not a great staff so far and I think most on here would agree. We've lost some key assistants and potentially could lose more like Coach Mines. We have to keep Coach Mines, it will be a massive hit in recruiting if we do. Bringing a guy from VMI doesn't sound great either because they don't win over there and this guy doesn't know how to coach winning football. Also I have not heard good things about Durden from his days at jmu.

VT -- take a deep breath. Most coaches will tell you that due to the issues at VMI, if you can coach there you can coach almost anywhere. Russ is very knowledgeable, has great contacts throughout the profession, he will get a great staff. I think you may listen to your JMU friends to much.
