ALMOST NAMED STORM HARVEY

UR press release...no decision yet.
IMHO, they are going to cancel the game. Hope I am wrong, but here's why:
If they were going to come to Richmond, they should have made the decision already. Flight cancellations and airport closures make the trip difficult, at this point.
If they were to play somewhere else in Texas, it still places personnel in harms way. Travel on the ground could be problematic.
If they were to move it to Thursday, Houston will still be recovering, and the game will be in the midst of a natural disaster.
If they were to move it to next Saturday, they are going to have the same problems as above.

Game has got to be cancelled or changed. Latest says Houston may be having flooding through Wednesday. Cannot risk lives and health when state of disaster already declared. Fans will never be allowed to travel to Huntsville and lodging will be most difficult.

Sounds like they have to cancel it. Even if they played it here, they will have to travel back there on Monday or Tuesday.

Admittedly, I haven't been paying attention to all the latest weather reports, but Huntsville is another 70 miles inland from Houston. This isn't as though it's Richmond and Glen Allen. Weather.com has Huntsville, TX getting 2-3 inches of rain on Sunday.

Agree 05, but apparently travel from Houston due to flooding will be heavily restricted if not impossible. Inland flooding is what have "experts" concerned.

Travel from Houston may not be necessary for game logistics, although if people are evacuating coastal areas, Huntsville could still have some impacts from that.

The only two options should be to cancel this game or move it over here. The risk is too big to have our team headed down there. I was just listening to the Greg Burton show on 950 and they said that the equipment truck has to head out either tonight or tomorrow morning.

In my opinion the storm is too big a risk and the team should not go down there. I don't want the game cancelled though as I think if a decision is made tonight we could move the game up here. Moving the game here is the best option, give Sam Houston their money and promise a return game their next year. We could even let them wear their home jerseys to make them feel more at home.

Statement on Richmond, Sam Houston State Football Game

Release: 08/24/2017

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – With impending inclement weather due to Hurricane Harvey headed for the Texas Gulf Coast and other parts of Southeast Texas, officials from both Sam Houston State and Richmond are considering all factors before coming to a decision regarding Sunday's scheduled football season opener for both teams.

As of reports Thursday afternoon, Harvey could be as large as a Category 3 hurricane when it makes predicted landfall this weekend. Officials from both schools are cognizant of the conditions and are working toward making a decision about the game that is in the best interest of both the teams, fans and game personnel.

"Obviously it is a very fluid situation that we are dealing with, and we will continue to monitor the storm before making a final decision regarding Sunday," Sam Houston Athletics Director Bobby Williams said. "The safety of both teams, personnel and fans are of the utmost importance and we expect to make a decision soon that is in the best interest of all involved."

"We will continue to work hand-in-hand with Sam Houston to ensure we make the best decision for both sides," Richmond Interim Athletic Director David Walsh added. "The safety of our student-athletes and staff is our top priority"

Currently the game between the No. 3 Bearkats and the No. 7 Spiders is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sunday and will be aired live on ESPNU as the lone college football game played in the nation that evening.

not just the teams, fans, etc., it is also the community and the lodging as some from houston might drive there to get out of flooded homes, etc. and find all hotels/motels, taken by fans attending a sporting event. again, it could be sunny and nice on sunday there, doubtful but who knows but with the storm expected to reach a cat 3, maybe even a 4, this game should go away and the decision should be made today.

If it gets as bad as projected just do what the SEC schools did. Postpone the game and have it moved up here for play on Thursday or Saturday next week. Get a local HS to play SHSU fight song and let them be the home team. All proceeds of the game go to relief fund. Hopefully it's not as bad as they say, 3 feet of rain is nuts.

Think we should get some barbecue and Shiner beer to make them feel comfortable.

I'd settle for a good game in reasonable conditions (wherever that happens to be).

Assume they have an open week next week too since the game was originally scheduled for Thurs? Just postpone until next week - location TBD (or place or theirs depending on severity) and put another game on the future schedule between us and them.

Our next game is 9/9, I believe theirs in 9/7.

Don't let rescheduling this game drag us into a mess with Colgate. Thay game is going to be a doozy up on NY on 9/9.

I would keep an open mind toward Thursday the 31st at Sammy but any later that that is going to cause a short week and lots of travel.

7-3 is a playoff bid.

It means we're on for Sunday unless charter is unable to land at CLL or IAH.
I would add if the game can be played safely, the latest I've heard we better play the game and get on the plane and leave that night.

The reports I'm reading on this storm, what's going on here is pretty stupid, quite honestly. Walsh need to turn around the equipment truck and call Sammy and tell them to be safe and let them know that we'll be in touch with them on Monday. Too much risk for too little reward here.

I think that is normal procedure for all road games -- play game and fly/bus back to RVa immediately after?

Game at 6pm CST, over at 9pm. Team on buses for college station by 9:45ish. In the air by 11:30. Another big issue is getting the equipment truck out of there after the game.

The original plan called for UR plane to leave at 3pm ET Saturday.
If so,there's plenty of time to monitor impacts of Mr Harvey down there to still have go/no go decision.

There is no way they are playing this game on Sunday. I would think state and local authorities down in Texas will tell Sam Houston State that they need to postpone the game and that is how this will go. Hopefully, since we both have open dates next weekend, the game get played then.

97, finally something we agree on!

the problem is Harvey moves back over Houston Wednesday creating same scenario. they are obviously looking at thur 31st as shsu plays the following thur. don't think the ncaa would allow 5 day break if game was sat. perhaps 32 count can research this.......was at campus at 9am equipment truck was still in parking lot
