A-10 Standings

I disagree about Bona. If they finish really strong including a win over URI, they will have a solid RPI plus wins over Maryland and Syracuse.

I don’t think they will make it as an at-large, but they do still have a chance.

I see, Lambs by 12, possibly EC Matthews injured and then VCU cuts through A10 tourney like hot knife through butter.

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!
Unfortunately I could very easily see vcu winning the a10 tournament. To be honest they would be my pick to win it.

VCU looked good with more energy and in first half shot 3 well.
URI is relentless and has quick hands. Not big but rebound strongly.
Lot of outside weapons and ability to drive. There is reason they are
undefeated. A

Rhody head and shoulders above everyone else this year. They’re going to need to tank in DC to do the league a favor and get another team in the dance

Yes they are. Just watched the Rhody beat down of VDU. They just keep bringing big players off the bench.

Trap Game? We have had a past record of stubbing our foot in a big way against these guys. And, for the first time in a while I am sensing a "trap game" tomorrow. Is there ANY chance we could be looking beyond our next opponent to the VCU game? If so, watch out. Our guys have to be "laser-focused" on only the present moment, and the present opponent, or we all know what can very easily happen. I hope our guys are mature enough (despite their young years) to NEVER look ahead. It can be a tough lesson to learn and I hope we don't have to learn it the hard way tomorrow... We need to have our heads where they have been over the past couple of weeks, which is focused on the players on the floor today, and beating them, one way or another.

What Strategy might work best? The best strategy in this game seems to me to be to pound it inside to Grant, and give him 20 shots (not 15), all from close range. If he is feeling good, we should be able to bank 20-30 points from this approach. If we can get him the ball, in the right position, and if he can "read" the single or double coverage, and pass it out to the open man when he is doubled, I like our chances to keep things rolling and pick up the W. If we settle for 3-point shots on our first few possessions, and don't use Buck and Nick at the high-post to feed the ball to Grant inside (which has worked like a charm), I will be less optimistic about how this game will go.

I agree with you 100% Spideroldie, if we continue to focus on what has gotten us this five game winning streak, second place standing, then we could be well on our way to reversing our trend over GooMoo from the last several years. Restoring order is about to take place in the afternoon. Here's to a firmer grip on second place...Go Spiders!!!

For separation purposes in the standings, I'm rooting for UMASS over Dayton, GW over Davidson, Fordham over St Louis, La Salle over St. Joes, and Duquesne and St. Bonaventure either one (though Duquesne would be better because we have the tiebreaker against them)

This of course, is in addition to a Spider win!!

Rhody barely beats Duquesne at home, barely beats UMass on the road, then goes to VCU and dominates. Tells you all you need to know about VCU. Let's beat Mason tomorrow and then finish VCU on Wednesday. We' will essentially be three games ahead of them if that happens.
URI dominates?....not from what I saw. It was a competitive game and VCU looked entirely different than when we played them, odd?

Agree this was a more aggressive VCU team that played strong D but URI was quick enough to handle press

From what I saw, both teams play better the faster they go. Slow either one down, and it gets interesting...

My summary is that Fordham is the only visiting team I’m rooting for...

URI 11-0
Davidson 7-3

SBU, RPI, UR 6-4

SLU, Duquesne 6-5

I'd be fine with a Final Standings going into DC of:

1 URI
2 Davidson
3 Duquesne (longshot)
4 SBU
5 RPI
6 UR

This is 1 year that I'd be ok with RPI one spot ahead of us but only if it is #5 & #6...

But first things first, let's give both teams a shove in the right direction with a win Wednesday.

Pretty sure this is wrong. Tie breaker for the 6-4 teams should be record against URI, then record against Davidson. We win the tie-breakers and should be in 3rd.

They are skipping any 0-0 tiebreakers. So since all 3 6-4 teams haven't played URI that tiebreaker is skipped.
It will work itself out as weeks go by...

*based on 2-0 record vs teams 6-5 [SBU hasn't played UR or VCU so head to head is invalid, UR hasn't played URI, VCU hasn't played Davidson]
** based on 1-0 record vs teams 6-5 [Richmond 1-1]

Jaylen Adams 44 points, 10 threes tonight for the Bonnies. Hopefully we have a good game plan for him this weekend.

Jaylen Adams may be another guy that Nathan Cayo could shut down like he did with Tillman in the last 7 minutes tonight.

Unless, of course, we do not believe that Nathan is a "shut-down" defender yet. I believe he is earning the title, and reminds me more of Tony Dobbins every single day... Would we put Tony on Jaylen? Probably so, if we had a defense that allowed one guy to shadow one guy... Like maybe in a "man" defense??? I wonder what might happen if we tried that defense for more than the last 7 minutes or so......

Don't look now - but we are in the driver seat to 2nd place finish in the A10. We have swept Davidson and VCU, and with Davidson ahead us by a game but with games vs URI (twice) and then VCU, and at Bonnies and at Duquesne - I see them losing a few down the stretch. We need to beat the Bonnies but then can probably lose 2 other games the rest of the way. If that holds true - we may finish 2nd in the A10, but with an overall losing record.

Maybe Mooney has found a new way to give us hope. Dump and tank in the OOC, then win in the A10 and get everyone's hopes up for next year. Might also result in an 1-2 year extension on his contract.

Next 2 games @ St. Bonnies and @ URI will tell the tale on this team. In a normal A-10 year, you have many really tough conference games, but this year, there are just 2, these 2.. If we can just grab one of these games, it will say a lot about this team and our potential for a run in the A-10 tournament.

The crazy thing is that even if we lose both of the next two games, we probably still finish in the top 4 if we go 4-1 or 5-0 the rest of the way (and we should be favored in 4 of those 5 games).

Even crazier, we likely finish top 4 with only 10 wins. We can go 3-4 over the last stretch of conference play and still get the double bye.

every conference game is tough.

This is a down year for the A-10. There is a whole bunch of mediocre teams in the conference this year.
There are 2 league teams with RPI's below 100, URI and St. Bonnie.

In a normal year, you would probably have 5-6 teams with sub 100 RPI's in conference. We've fattened up beating a bunch of teams that our mediocre just like us. So, going up and beating an actual legit team on the road will say a lot about this team. If we go up and our non-competitive against those 2 teams, that will likewise say a lot about us.

VCU is not even NIT worthy right now, so as excited as I am about beating them twice, this isn't like beating a VCU team of the past 7 years.

True. But we've had better teams in the last 7 years and not beaten them. Things are changing.

Not to look past anybody.....and agree "on paper" Bonnies and Rhody toughest...but for us the "toughest" to beat may be the Goo Moos..................

I agree with you, but in any of the last 7 years the best any of those teams would have done on this road trip is 1-1. Our youngsters will have show a lot of grit to get up after that exhausting win last night.
