'24-'25 Spiders Friends and Family

Spiderman, I am hoping these two come out of the redshirt year and are good, but why did they redshirt this year if they are good?

Our team is not good right now.
This is the million dollar question I ask every day. I watch them both in warm-ups and both clearly look the part. Very athletic, major hops, college ready bodies. And then why are they sitting on the bench, while we run out AP, Roche, Tanner at the wings who give us essentially nothing most nights.

both are wing players who probably expected roles early, competing mainly with Tanner, Roche and Noyes.

then we add Dusan and AP ... likely each at a pretty high NIL cost. both are probably 3 or 4 years older than McGlothin and JRob. expectation in the program (correctly) was that Ducan and AP would play a lot. Roche would play. there was the Tanner summer hype. and there was a lot of talk (incorrectly) that we'd play 2 of the 3 bigs together some. so if expectations were correct about Dusan and AP and Roche and Tanner and the 2nd big, there wouldn't be a lot of time for the freshmen.

so we gave them the option. do you want to compete with 5 other guys for 2 spots, plus each other, for minutes this year. or do you want to redshirt, work on skills, lift, learn our system, get acclimated to school, still get paid, and still have 4 years of eligibility left?

personally I'd redshirt all day given the offer. I'll take 5 years of free college plus NIL in a heartbeat. bigger question is why did we offer the redshirt? we've debated this before. there's very little reason to offer a redshirt anymore. if you're hoping to benefit from that 5th year, odds are we won't. but Golden and Gilyard stayed so I guess it's possible.
my theory (and hope) as well

And they are going up against these guys in practice. If they aren't consistently beating Tanner, AP, Dusan than I'm not too optimistic. Because every team we play, consistently beats these guys on the court, particularly on the offensive side of things. Dusan at least can put the ball in the basket, which is a step up from our other wings.

one other point ... we had the Collin Tanner example to point to from just the prior year.
we offered him a redshirt. he declined it. he played 25 minutes all year. a wasted year of eligibility. could have been lined up to get a free masters degree. instead played 25 minutes.

Mooney's job is to win games. Not run a degree mill for all of his recruiting misses.

The fact that they went all summer thinking and telling us we had one of the best shooting team we have ever assembled, so much so that we had to redshirt our two "big" freshman recuits because their is no way they could get much time with all of the talent on the team.

They told us that, they told their NIL guys that, they told PQ and Hardt that. Why would anyone trust them ever again. Either they were lying or as Section 9 speculates they are just really bad talent evaluators. In neither situation, do you want this group running your MBB program.

Well if the redshirts and freshman are as good as u think then he will be gone anyway, or on the bench so the redshirt is a moot point. All it would have done is have him hang around another year. He looks ok on offense but hard to argue that he is not one of the worst defenders in the a10. Though I know in moons world that doesn't matter.

Tanner just has very little flexibility. He just seems to play really stiff out there. It is most apparent on defense.

maybe Moon has a bonus for guys staying 5 years & getting a masters degree. Best agent ever. he kind of sucks at MTEs but he's good getting over on the UR admin.

reminds me years ago someone once told me well Mooney graduates his players. I was like are you familiar with Richmond? That's a cultural thing built into school long b4 Mooney. U stay u graduate.

Hey my concern is who will go in the portal, even those redshirting? I can see Beagle
going since he is now reduced to single digit minutes. Tanner is playing due to injuries,
and is showing some improvement, but with AP back next year, what will be the case. Also
AP I don't think likes the disciplined offensive style of Mooney, so he may be seeking a more
wide open team. Solis still has a way to go but has his moments and still needs to gain strength.
Walz as a freshman came in pretty well built and that has helped him. Based on last couple of weeks
I can see Walz being a double digit scorer/rebounder a lot next year. Tyne is not the sharpest knife in the kitchen, but his shooting has gotten better. He is just not a great distributor of the ball.

My concern is what players are not going in the portal. Maybe keep Walz and Soulis but everyone else, bye.

Two comments:

1. I hope they didn’t feel they were competing against Noyes considering he was no longer with the program. That would be awkward.
2. Can we go ahead and agree that no coaching staff should be intentionally redshirting anyone when they don’t know what they have. We had zero proven commodities at the Forward spots. This seems like a really basic concept.

1) agreed. Noyes wasn't a factor when they decided to redshirt.
2) agreed, but I don't think we "decided" to redshirt them. think they were presented the opportunity and they took it.

Dusan was proven. Roche has been good. AP has obviously struggled. Tanner didn't make the jump Mooney was expecting. and we never tried the 2 big lineup.

I still think our bigger problem this year has been at guard. Tyne is coming on now, but it was a really slow start. BA started very slowly too. GW3 has been non-existent. and Hunt got hurt.

No doubt that the guard spots are what ails us by and large, total agreement.

I’d dither on Dusan being proven. Volume scorer on a bad Dartmouth team. New league new coach new system new teammates…you can’t say he’s a proven commodity. Roche has been good? By what measure? Averaging 6.6ppg ain't gonna cut it. None of the forwards were proven players and there’s zero reason to redshirt a guy until you’re locked in on starters after a number of games have shown this out.

Nelson came here with two state titles at two different schools and as a leader of one of the best HS teams in the country. Doubt next year's recruit is better in HS than Nelson was. So I'm withholding judgment on how great he'll be.

if we didn't think Dusan was a great get then we don't target him and throw NIL at him as a 5th year guy.

Roche's eFG% is by far the best on the team. agreed 6.6 ppg isn't special. he can't get enough shots. but I want efficient scorers.

and I'm not justifying offering these 2 the redshirt. I'd rather the compete and earn time. we thought we'd be better than this. we didn't see a 20 loss season where we might pivot and play the freshmen a lot.

but I don't blame the freshmen for taking the offer. and I don't think it rules out that they can be really good.

btw is this speculation? possible...but I don't remember anyone speaking to that. we should expect a couple of our #nextbestclass will redshirt next season. Most likely Harper or Richardson. But perhaps Argabright if we bring in a transfer PG.

I remember Tanner being offered the redshirt and deciding to play. others took the shirt.

depends on the roster after attrition and additions, but unless GW3 shows a lot this last month I'd think there are a lot of minutes available at guard. .

GW3 is probably done for the season. The little bit Moon allowed him to play we really don't know what his skill is. Other than DH, he sat behind guards that were for the most part ineffective when GW3 was healthy enough to play.

right now our backcourt next year is Tyne, GW3, and freshmen.
plus Tanner if we use him at guard ... which I think we'll have to.
