2025 Portal Tracker

I assume their new assistant gm is hammering the portal as we speak for replacements ...
Yep, you would think a call from Steph (and some money of course :)) would talk well to portal recruits. So far its a net negative - so either they aren't as impressed with junior, or Davidson did not "compete" for them, or they want to play in power conference.

yah the Bailey transferred shocked me - may be completing wrong but sort of assumed being from Cambridge, MA his family has money or perhaps has a dad Harvard prof .. I can't seem him starring on a P5 team and just would have thought he would have wanted to finish out at Davidson and finish off a senior year - maybe his initial intention since his news came later than some was to stay and then he realized he would be playing with effectively a new group of players anyway. Hating more and more the one and done transfer era model.

That's a tough read. Do they know (or care?) how many non-P5 fans are on the verge of just checking out
It is really tough to see college basketball be monetized in the way it has. It is just one big money grab for everyone in involved, with no rules or regulations. Transfer as much as you want, go to 4 different schools in 4 years, no one cares about the sport or frankly the players playing it.

It is a completely unlevel playing field at this point, your team changes nearly completely almost every year, and the portal has created this "me first and me only" mentality which is the anti-thesis of a team sport like basketball. I hate everything about it.

this is speed dating. have to move fast, and it's a numbers game.

there's already 1,300 in the portal and we may hit 2,000. there are certainly way over 100 that would be interesting to us.
my understanding is the process is something like this. every kid that hits the portal gets a look from someone on the staff at stats, team and conference level, high school ranking, any reason we might be a fit, etc. if there's any interest at all, kid gets discussed. if still interested, an assistant makes contact to express interest and gauge reciprocal interest.

many of the kids we'll see lists from only get to this level.

internally we're prioritizing. the head coach soon makes contact with the top guys we really are hoping for. the fall back options are still talking to assistants. HC offers a visit. if a kid if offfered and accepts a visit (like Duggan), he's clearly a priority recruit to us. but we're not just talking to that guy. if we need a PG, we're talking to a bunch of PG's and the head coach is talking to a couple trying to get visits. after a visit, kid is told we want him ... but we have to fill the spot. can't hold it long. another guy is coming on a visit for the same spot soon.

the recruits know what kind of priority they are based on all this too. if the head coach isn't calling, they know they're behind a couple guys. some are fine waiting for their dream spot. others want to go where they're really wanted.
It's really gotten to the point where you don't want the transfer prospect to leave the visit without committing. Once that guy leaves campus without committing any school can swoop in with a high offer. That's not saying that some kids will just love UR but it's a brutally competitive market.

Curt Lewis, who got a medical redshirt at ETSU this season due to a groin injury after appearing in 8 games. Played the year before at Mizzou and two years before that at EKU.

This is a nice pickup for Davidson...watch a lot of Wake basketball b/c my brother went there, and Friedrichsen can really shoot it. Should be a great fit in their system and a solid replacement for Bobby Buckets.

In the past even an average player would be warmly welcomed back and remembered fondly by a fanbase that he played in front of for his entire career. Now with all the 1-2 year rentals on the market unless you did or achieved something especially remarkable the average fan will be like "who the hell is that guy" when your name is brought up many years down the road. But hey at least you guys got paid 🤷‍♂️

The portal giveth and the portal taketh away...two of those five guys were well-traveled before landing at Robert Morris.

Kam Woods is searching for his 6th school...COVID year at Troy, then a JUCO year, then NC A&T, then NC State, then Robert Morris. DJ Smith played two at Little Rock, apparently got a medical redshirt after playing in 8 games for Bowling Green, then Robert Morris.

Big part nowadays is chasing the Benjamins.

the vast majority of college basketball players won't make money playing professionally. they'll go out and get jobs. and while UR and many others do graduate guys who go on to make nice livings, a ton college basketball players won't get desirable jobs. this NIL money can be life changing.

we complain an awful lot as fans that this isn't in our best interest. but I don't blame a kid in today's environment for finding a place that financially values him.

love the highlights. wonder if he has 2 years.
and wonder about the plan ... unless one of our 3 bigs is leaving.

You can never have too many bigs so that if we pick up another, then 3 sitting on the pine sharing available mins. Unless there is some really impactful potential out there for another big (assuming all of our existing 3 remain), we should concentrate on other holes that need to be filled.

I wanted to check in and see how many spots we have available to fill. I was hoping a lot, but am worried we only have two. I could have missed some news on transfers, but I think I only saw that GW3 and Weaver are transferring.

The new rules state we get 15 roster spots, which includes walk ons. What is the status on them? Are Graham and K. Mooney returning? If so, wouldn't that put us at 13, leaving on 2 spots left? I was really hoping more of our guys would transfer out this off season.

you didn't miss anything. just GW3 and Weaver. no word on Graham or Mooney.
nobody played well enough to move up a level. nobody wants to move down.

Thx Sman. Good point on the moving up/down comment. I think we have plenty of candidates who should move down, but maybe aren't because they feel if they got minutes this past season, they will next season. The problem with that is if a few of them get good minutes next season, we will likely struggle again.

I don't want to be too negative here, but I seriously don't see any big concerns if we lost everyone from this year's team. With bigs being much harder to find, I would probably say Walz would be number one on my guys to return. After that, maybe AP, but I could be reaching there. I would say no to Tyne and Beagle. I could see having Soulis here because he could get bigger and better with experience. Tanner I'm not sure about, but maybe he could make a leap in year 3. Just hard to count on that. So, best case would be Tyne and Beagle transfer, and if the other 4 stay, at least 3 are reserves next year, with maybe Walz starting with 4 new guys.

No matter how many spots we have, the number 1 guy we have to land is a proven guard who can shoot the 3.

A few of us regulars on the board are also considering transferring - somewhat joking - somewhat not -- about as down on the game in general as I have ever been.

Pretty much the way I feel. No offense to any current player, but we could start with 15 new ones and I'd probably be more excited.

What a relief to see you posting again, some of us were starting to get worried that the oxygen tanks in the bunker had gone out.
