2019 - Win or else for Huesman

Rocco build a straw house and threw a match on it. Huesman hasn’t been able to put out the fire. I just hope that he can rebuild it or get out of the way for someone else to.
A straw house that went to the semi-finals just a few years ago??? lol. This team is light years from a playoff appearance let alone going deep in the playoffs.

I've been quiet for a few weeks but just thought I'd add my 2 cents real quick. As players we love the game and dont want to lose, the nature of competition. None of these seniors are "quitting" while they're out there or arent trying. Theres literally times where the guys dont get the defensive call or they're running the most basic of concepts with teams not having to respect the run because we don't trust our RBs. One of the many reasons you guys have heard that the team doesnt like huesman, is because since he stepped on this campus he belittled and disrespected his players and coaching staff. A lot like what I've been reading from UMD. We were trying to adjust to everything that he was trying to change in the program but we knew if we made one mistake, we'd be coming over to the sideline and get ridiculed. Caused some us to play more tentative, than normal. You can say that, that is soft and we cant take critiscm, but if you heard some of the things he'd say you wouldn't want your son being talked to that way. That's my 2 cents, time to go incognito again.

I think the view of a player does mean something. I’ve watched this team all season and there is talent. The team looks unmotivated to me and I see no rallying around a beleaguered coach as you see at say William & Mary for Laycock. In his pressers, Huesman has a loser’s attitude full of woe and doom and resignation to poor performance. How many times do we have to hear, “Well, we were out-coached.” Maybe that will change, but I’d never wanna play for a guy like that.

What comes through to me when I listen to him is that he doesn't think he was out-coached at all. When I listen to him he always sounds to me like he's totally blaming the players. It almost comes off as "poor me - - i did everything I could and these guys just keep screwing it up for me." I certainly don't have the sense that he feels like he's in the bunker with the kids and they are all in it together and they will all triumph over it together etc. If the players "hear" it the same way I do, I wouldn't want to play for him either.

By the way, my deepest concern isn't the coach. Its the previous coach - - or rather something he said. Danny's stated reason for leaving (all speculation aside) was that he didn't think UR was committed enough to continue to compete at the top rung of FCS football. What if he was right?

That's my concern. Its not just Huesman, its deeper than that. And we are now seeing the longer term effects of some of what Danny was concerned about. In which case its going to take more than another coach and more than a little bit of time to make it right.

Good luck to the disenfranchised, the downtrodden, the disenchanted.
Clean out the Rocco recruits who don’t want to play for Russ et al.
I could give 2 craps what eagle says or “thinks” about anything.
Start from scratch.I’m ok with that.Lets get kids that want to go to UR
and play for Russ.Let the exiters get a job somewhere or transfer.Who cares.Good luck.Grow up.

I feel like that's been said for 25 years though. Certainly I think our competition tries or has used that narrative against us. Now we weren't fully funded on ships for a while, then the whole Cooper Patriot League thing. so some our own doing. But those were rectified. And then we've had our best run of football over those 25 years, some dips of course. I lean to the coach. Think it makes quite a lot of the difference. Plus the top rung of FCS has declined. We won national championship 10 years ago when it was harder. Some of the best teams have left. Hard for me to believe we aren't spending or committed enough when I look at most of rest of FCS. Yes a few exceptions. But I could be wrong. Not dismissing what you say. Plenty of others on here are more UR insiders and would have better pulse. Just my take. Personally I feel Rocco's comments centered on recruiting. I don't think so much spending & faciilties, salary pool etc. Possibly some COA I don't know. Recruiting was my take. And he probably has a point there. I've always been of the opinion we can relax standards some more than we already do for student athletes esp bball and football.

I don’t buy what Eagle is saying. You’re not a coach, and head coach, for as many years as RH
has been, and then become this accusatory task master.
If Eagle is a player on the team, he is one that has an axe to grind for being a benched

Eagle's from JMU

I was able to catch the show today. Yarbrough is a very impressive young man. Played all 3 positions on the OL and he’s going to have an opportunity to play football professionally.

FWIW, Coach Huesman signed off by saying that this team and program are going to be good next year. He took personal responsibility for this season and vowed to get us back to winning championships. Now if we struggle again next year that was just “coach speak” but I appreciated hearing that nonetheless.

Russ says he expects a signing class of 16 high schoolers and 3-4 transfers for a total class of 19-20.

He expects to sign 12-14 high schoolers in December with the remainder coming in the February timeframe.

We have 11 verbals at this time but we may be vulnerable with Charlotte Catholic player receiving a PWO from UNC,

Our transfer results this season did not pan out whatsoever nor the Tulane transfer in 2017.

Brissett was mentioned as a possible returnee because of his injury “redshirt” season.I’m not convinced he’s returning.

Just a point of reference...former UR assistant Mike Elko is the DC at Texas A&M that gave up 72 points in a winning effort

Interceptions derailed Spiders last season. Coach Russ Huesman guarantees history will not repeat.

JOHN O'CONNOR·1 hour ago

Some came on tipped balls. Some were caused by poor pass protection, or an incorrectly run route, or an overthrow. And there were many other factors.

The "how" doesn't matter as much to University of Richmond coach Russ Huesman as the "how many?"

Spiders quarterbacks threw 18 interceptions in 11 games last season. When UR begins spring practice on March 1, aerial turnovers will be the central issue Richmond will address.

Huesman said he gave offensive coordinator Jeff Durden a two-word directive as the UR staff began preparing for spring ball: "Fix it."

Subpar decision-making by quarterbacks led the list of reasons for interceptions, in Huesman's estimation.

Add nine fumbles lost and the Spiders (4-7, 2-6 CAA) committed 27 turnovers. Their turnover margin of minus-9 ranked No. 107 among 124 FCS teams.

"If I can make one guarantee to you, we're going to cut that," Huesman said. "One is going to be too many this year."

Huesman was the defensive coordinator for the 2008 Richmond team that won the FCS championship. Those Spiders completed a 13-3 season with a turnover margin of plus-24.

"That's why you win a national championship. You don't win championships without playing great defense and hanging on to the football," Huesman said. "Two things will happen [this] year. We'll play great defense and we will not turn the ball over."

Only one FCS team among the division's 124 threw more interceptions than Richmond, and that was VMI (19). The Keydets, who went 1-10, averaged 53 pass attempts, the most in FBS or FCS. The Spiders averaged 33 pass attempts.

Kevin Johnson, who began the season as starting quarterback and resurfaced as the backup, threw eight interceptions in seven games. Joe Mancuso became the starter after backing up Johnson, and Mancuso threw 10 in nine games.

By the end of the season, Reid Chenault started. He threw none in four games he played (64 pass attempts).

Johnson transferred from Richmond. Mancuso and Chenault return this year as juniors. It seems probable that the Spiders will try to bring in a transfer quarterback before summer practice begins.

"Most people in [the CAA] are one or two players away from winning the championship, and one or two players away from being at the bottom," Huesman said. "That's what this league is all about."

Another emphasis for Richmond this spring is remaining healthy. The Spiders finished the 2018 season with eight players who started every game. Only three played offense, each a lineman.

"We're going to have to be careful this spring, obviously, how much hitting we do, how much tackling we do," said Huesman, who's in his third year as Spiders coach. "You've got to be smart in the contact that you have, the rest that you're giving.

"We've had just about everything happen ... a hip, a shoulder, a knee, a hamstring. You name it and we kind of had it. If it was one thing specifically, you might be able to say 'OK, what's going on here?' But it's just been kind of a wide range of everything that occurred."

The Spiders will play their spring game April 6.
