2018-2019 Starting Lineup

Spiderman, I know you are not talking about me being negative, go back the last week and I am being positive, with only a few negative posts, until are usual one sided posters attacked. Hardt is a successful AD? What about football at Bucknell, I believe 3 straight losing seasons. The more posters like you try to encourage Hardt that we are turning the corner, the more emboldened PQ and Hardt are for the status quo. Keep up your rants, you are just making this board and our program worse. Kudos!
interesting theory, but I don't have any effect on emboldening PQ or Hardt. you value posts here way too much.
my posts do nothing to make our program worse or better. as yours do nothing to make it worse or better.
now whether my rants make the board worse ... that's certainly a possibility.

How do you know post on here do not influence. We have heard Mooney make note of them.

ok, so I stand by what I said and I'm still amazed you feel otherwise.

like any coach, or anybody really, he'll take input from people he respects. someone who knows what he's talking about and actually speaks to him. not some anonymous guy on a keyboard. not you and not me.

This is huge talk from Mooney, whom as mentioned by others, doesn't normally come out with that kind of praise for a freshman who has never seen the floor. If Wojcik has gained that kind of "coaches confidence" this early on that is a BIG sign that he will have much success.

And, of course, the more a freshman gets to play (especially in meaningful situations) the faster that they will develop. It sure seems that Mooney likes his savvy (which is the intangible that coaches kids often bring to the table) since he is already talking about expecting significant contributions.

Encouraged by the size of Sal. He looks taller AND a bit more bulky than I was expecting. Haven't seen him play so I can't comment on that, but I like his length. Long, lanky arms and big hands can provide advantages. And though it is completely unscientific, to me he has the look of a player who may not be fully grown yet. Time will tell.

It is going to be very interesting to see the starting lineup for our first game. I'm much more optimistic about the team IF Sal and Woj can beat out the incumbent bench for the final two starting spots. No more being woefully undersized like last year.

that would be exciting/interesting. I'm guess Nathan holds off Sal, at least to start, only because in the little video clips Nathan has looked very good. we'll see as the year progresses.

very interested in Wojcik & Andre at the 2 though. I know JJ is tough and a leader, and we need both of those things. but Wojcik looks like a far superior shooter, and Andre a far superior ball handler. we have options there. we'll see who's ready.

How about three 3 man rotations?
Grant, Nathan, Sal (2 spots)
Nick, Julius, Noah (1 spot)
Jacob, Jake, Andre (2 spots)

That would leave Tomas, Bryce and Matt...

I think Cayo will have to play a lot b/c he's the best defender of the bunch. He's not a good outside shooter, so maybe Jake slides in at the 2 to give you 4 other guys on the court who can hit a 3.

I'm sure some of you will recall that Mooney really hyped Duinker as a freshman, stating he should challenge for ROY. That did not quite work out. Mooney was very high on Nick and Buck too, on the flip side - and both had nice freshman years - with Buck as ROY.

It will be very interesting to see how Woj and Sal turn out this year, obviously huge determinants in our success or lack there of.
I think you need to have 3 A10 level starter/solid reserve players from the group of Woj/Gustavson/Yates/Cayo/Sal in order to have a decent season. Verbinskis is a total wild card, especially with the injury now. I haven't heard Ulla mention Scheider in forever, so assuming he is well behind the Gus/Woj/Julius group and will not see minutes.

that probably makes the most sense for balance, playing Wojcik at the 2 when Cayo's on the floor and playing Julius/Andre when Sal's on the floor.
unless you want an all-defensive lineup and an all-offensive lineup.

#12. Richmond

Embattled Spiders head coach Joe Mooney has to find a way to win some games this year. I’m less optimistic than many with the departures of key cogs De’Monte Buckingham and Khwan Fore. A Grant Golden/Nick Sherod/Jacob Gilyard core is strong, but Richmond won’t have much depth or talent beyond that group. A finish in the bottom 4 may seal Mooney’s fate, but the Spiders have come out of nowhere before and with all the uncertainty in this conference, it wouldn’t surprise me if they did it again.

I sure hope Coach Joe can put it all together this year...

this is the kind of ranking I expected a lot of this year. most look at how you did last year, who you lost, and who you added. simple math and done in 10 minutes per team.

I haven't bought "Blue Ribbon" in a while, but love their stuff. if they rank us 12th I'll be a little concerned. they actually put a lot of work into their projections.

back to the lineup ... I assume the RTD was given guidance today.
they list Gilyard, JJ, Sherod, Cayo and Golden as starters.
the others expected "to blend into the rotation" are Yates, Wojcik, Sal, and Andre.

I don't have the article, but the headline basically backs up my fear for Grant. Like TJ, will he have to defer on defense and play timid? He is our biggest stud athletically and if he is playing defense with one hand behind his back, with Dilly, JJ, and Sherod on the perimeter. I am more worried about our defense vs our offense this year. Cayo looks like he can be a very good defender but had a very high foul rate. What is our identity on defense? Not sure we have one.

not timid, but yes he's too valuable offensively to take stupid fouls. and he recognizes he has to keep his head and not get technicals.

article mentions he's 265 and no other scholarshipped player is over 210 except Sherod at 230. should Nick be 230? he's certainly not fat. TJ wasn't fat either as a junior but he came back ripped and much quicker as a senior. I'd love to see Nick make that same transformation. I'd like to see him at 220.

Nick is just right at 230; he is a force underneath, especially on offense.

Well, unfortunately we have seen that if Grant just plays good defense, idiot refs will call him for fouls that are not earned. I remember TJ basically having to back off of plays. Hopefully Grant can find the balance and Cayo and Sal are solid.

Been saying this all offseason but if JJ is our starter at the 2, that is not a good sign at all. I realize all these guys are new but beating out JJ for the starting spot is not a high bar.

my guess is it's always been JJ's job to lose. he's the guy unless he's playing poorly or a newcomer is clearly better. still time for that to happen.

I would modify this to say that if JJ is our starter at the 2 more than (XX) games into the season, then that's not a good sign.

Realistically, CM will start a senior as he should, until such time as a better option becomes evident.

Agree that he tends to lean that way, and that Mooney will likely start the upperclassman. But, the team will be less effective if JJ is occupying too large of a role. He can help with 10-minutes or so of all-in hustle and grit from the bench.

Sherod and Jacob both started game 1 as freshman. Buck, if I recall, it didn't take him too long (less than 5 games) to be named a starter. I like JJ's role as a 7th-8th man off the bench giving us hustle and intensity. He is simply not starter's material. I hope either Jake or Andre take this starting spot by December at the latest. We need one of those guys to be good from the get go. Mooney really needs that.

Grant just checked in at #10 on the A-10 countdown of Top players. That is a bit low in my estimation, probably would have had him around 5. But I think this puts to rest whether Sherod is going to be ranked in the Top 25.

Hmmm, I am guessing this A-10 countdown does not realize that Nick led the Spiders in scoring in A10 games (17.6 ppg) also averaged 6 rebounds per and shot about 42% from 3. Keep sleeping on him suckers.

Luv Nick and glad he is a Spider, but if he wants to play in pros he has things he needs to work on

So do hundreds of other really good college players. There are plenty of conference player of the years that do not make the NBA. I will take Nick and his likely close to 20 ppg this year on my college team just the way he is.

Exactly. And he was a top ten returning scorer in the A-10. How that and what you mentioned above would not mean top 25 player this year is beyond ridiculous. If he is not on the list, those that made the list will look awfully foolish after Nick scores close to 20 ppg and leads us to several wins.
