Silas Barksdale - 2025 Offer

And I have no idea if this applies to Barksdale or any other of their current players, but it's also true that it's easier to get into VCU than Richmond academically
Kneepad, 80's has confirmed loosening of academic standards. I do believe this to be proven out, not that I am aware of any individual player's academic situation - however I have not heard of this issue cropping up recently - which we did hear a few times with specific players earlier in Moon's regime. It does seem in this NIL/Portal era that academics are very rarely ever cited in any school or league - its basically $$$$ now.

As SF will tell you, I was probably irrationally exuberant on Soulis last season. I still think he can be a wild card this season. He lost a year last season - but I do still see him as a high ceiling guy. To Sman's point - if we were to go with two bigs - I believe Soulis is best suited as a more athletic 4 - that could get out to shooters on the perimeter and potentially be a match up problem on the offensive end. Problem for him is that it would seem Dusan is more proven, and maybe even Glou slides into the stretch 4 for some minutes, though I hope he has enough ball skills to be more of a wing.

Silas Barksdale - 2025 Offer

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But that doesn’t answer what VCU has to get good recruits chose them over schools like Butler and Miami, and other schools on his list.
Some people like a city campus, a larger school community than 3800 people, different majors/academic focus, etc. Some players probably look at the brand and realize they have a better recent history than we do of making the tournament and better name cache. Right now that's a fact until we change it.

And I have no idea if this applies to Barksdale or any other of their current players, but it's also true that it's easier to get into VCU than Richmond academically. Again, Barksdale could be a great student who could get in anywhere, but I imagine that is a factor in some cases.

Found this in an article about his HS going undefeated last year while winning state championship. Wonder if he can talk his cornerback buddy into coming along.

The Firebirds also return wide receiver Donovan Higgins and cornerback Joshua Sims, both seniors. Higgins has offers from Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Memphis, Indiana and Arkansas State. Sims has a slew of offers from schools like Louisville, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Duke and Indiana.

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Prologue - Wofford

I'm really looking forward to seeing the Spiders Saturday at The Brick House...Coach Huesman said several times since the loss to UVA that it's sometimes hard to draw conclusions from an FCS v. BCS game...I wasn't surprised Virginia won the game, but was surprised we weren't more competitive, particularly early in the game when it was decided...

Huesman says he expects the Terriers will be a big test for the Spiders...I agree with some who believe Wofford may be better than their predicted 8th place finish in the nine team SOCON...it may be a competitive game and should be one that fans can draw FCS conclusions from...

like Coach Huesman, I'm hoping we tackle better if the Terriers are able to get in space...that we use our talented and experienced skill position players to generate a more explosive offensive game...

the Spiders are favored by about 2 TDs in this one...if we play up to preseason expectations we should be favored similarly in many of our games...Wofford should be a good test which challenges our ability to play with energy, excitement, and emotion, intangibles that Huesman was disappointed in at Virginia...

solid execution and a convincing win over the Terriers would erase some of the memories of last season's early stumbles and allow fans to conclude that this team can play up to its strong preseason expectations...when I walk out of The Brick House Saturday evening I want to be energized and excited about the season ahead!

enjoy the Prologue!

Go Spiders!

So, my point was how hard it is to actually know what to expect. I am probably not under or over estimating because I have literally said its guess work and I have no real expectations, good or bad. What we have to work with are some stats (from leagues we know little about) maybe a few videoclips and maybe ( but doubt it) someone saw a game or two. Not nearly enough to create realistic expectations - - good or bad. We have a LOT of questions this year. A lot. The transfers at the center of it. But also questions about the returnees too. And outside of Hunt. not a lot of known. Even Hunt has the question about can he step up and be even more than he was last year.

We had a lot of questions last year (though not as many as this year) and they all got answered pretty positively. King stepped way up. DJII made a big jump (both on offense and defense) once finally healthy. We emerged as an excellent defensive team as others (Harris, Tyne, Hunt) all answered some questions on the upside. That kind of thing could happen again no doubt. I don't know that I see it being done the same way because I don't think I see a path to being the same level defensively (unless I guess if Robinson and Romoglu emerge as defensive studs) but I do see a possible pass to being better on offense where we weren't as good last year. as we have been historically.

Lots of questions will have to answered positively though to get back to where we were last year overall. Time will tell! But any expectations (good or bad) are probably better described as hopes and fears than expectations. I have plenty of hopes and fears - - not too many expectations (except that our schedule sucks so bad, its almost impossible for us to be an at-large)!
Sorry, didn't mean to criticize, just want to correct what you said. The 3 players mentioned all played very well at their previous school and were one of the top players on the team. I think Beagle has potential to make one of the all conference teams. He is a rebounding machine.

Agree with this. We have the potential to have our best tandem at center in a long time. As you note, Beagle was the AEC rookie of the year, best freshman in an entire conference, means he can play. And yes, Walz is a full grown man. Quinn, Golden, TJ were all finesse/skill guys at the center position. Yes, they could do more skill wise than Walz but they also lacked his physically imposing presence. Should make for a nice contrast between him and Beagle. And will be interesting if Mooney plays them on the court together. Mooney has generally avoided it, despite the urging from this board, and the few times he has tried it, the results have been meh at best.
Mooney said a few month ago he might play both, although that might change based on how everyone develops.

I think you are way under estimating the quality of the transfers "(Beagle, White, Nescovic) who were solid (but not spectacular)" and quality of the team. All 3 of the guys you mentioned as "not spectacular" are potential starters, although they will have difficult competition at each position. I am very high on this team.

Silas Barksdale - 2025 Offer

I'm all for a strong VCU. We need to raise up to that level on a year over year basis. One of the really biggest disappointments in the Mooney ERA. We went to S16, VCU went to F4 with Shaka. Many coaching changes later we have been very seldom NCAA team, and they have established as one of the very top mid majors. We have had a TON of excuses not to get there (the Leafy campus crowd can list them), and this heinous schedule is the latest for excuse mongering.
Well said. I dislike VCU immensely as our rival. But I'd admire their program and their commitment to excellence and not taking any excuses for anything less.
