NCAAB Betting 24-25

3-0 Evening brings me to 6-4. Though would have been glad to take the L on the Aztecs game if they could have won, but with top scorer out and hobbled starter did not see them having the offense to hang with Gonzaga. It's funny, they have similar freshman class in a big guard/wing and a very athletic, yet developing skill big forward (also a little undersized). They have been getting good time, and are in a four game gauntlet that will get those freshman some great experience. Wish our freshman would be un shirted and get some run. Not sure how in this environment you red shirt.
Have to wonder if continue to stink, if the decision to redshirt isn't changed.

Opening Night Lineup - Just for fun

I'm hopeful AP can be great but I can't move him into the starting lineup when he's shooting 18% from 3, 20% from 2, and 50% from the line! plus the dumb technical. let him have a great game off the bench first please. it'll happen.

I'm not as down on Tanner as some of you. he should be more aggressive shooting from outside. he needs to listen to the analytics and stop with the midrange pullups. but I disagree with the talk that his defense is so bad. he's defending. plus he and Roche are the only 2 guys hitting a respectable percentage from 3.

OOC Grade is in!!! No surprise, it's an F

I will say, I have always felt that one indicator of a great program/coach at the mid-major level is how often its coaches move up to the higher level. Its certainly not the only factor, but it is a sign of success in my opinion. For instance, VCU has had Shaka, Will Wade, and Mike Rhoades all come and go to higher level programs in the past 10-15 years. Typically the coaches that have stayed at one program have had tremendous national level success like Coach K, Roy Williams, Boheim, Mark Few. Mooney is certainly not in that category. But there is a category below that where guys like McKillop and Mark Schmidt from the A10 are in, where I think UR administration feels Mooney falls into. When we think of other coaches at UR like Roussell for women basketball, Chemotti for men's lacrosse, or even Allison Kwolek who left WLax to be coach at Clemson, their names will likely be at least mentioned as an option to fill coaching positions vacancies at bigger name programs every year.
Yeah, and not 1 higher level program has even inquired about Mooney for the good part of the last decade. Wonder why???

Mens 2024 - 2025 Polls/Rankings/Awards

I do think we are capable of shooting better than 26% from 3 but at some point we have to accept that maybe it won’t be that much better and that this is the norm this year. The way we shoot in practice/scrimmages is not the same as an actual game. As a team, we need to be more dynamic in our scoring than hinging on the 3 ball to win us games. It has not so far and against weaker competition too.

The official Richmond Women's Top 25 thread

2 stinkin' votes in the AP poll.

Shoutout to Mitchell Northam of WUNC for being a certified ball knower and putting us at #25. He used to cover HS sports on the Eastern Shore of MD where I grew up.

Charlotte Game (and travel) thread - Wed 11/13 7pm ESPN+

TJ has a reflection on Mooney in the latest edition of the alumni magazine...the first Richmond game he ever watched was the Mooney Meltdown™ against Charlotte. 😂

This quote, "My first impression of Mooney was this guy really wants to win" from TJ is kind of stunning. TJ probably doesn't know of the rest of the story around the game with Charlotte. Mooney apologizing for this passion the next day and then completely changing his sideline demeanor after that game from a coach that coached with passion to one that we have today.

I think Mooney learned probably the most valuable lesson he ever learned about the state of UR athletics that day. In that, if you wanna coach here for a long time, you need to present and project as this buttoned up/polished intellectual looking guy, who is above the fray of showing "sophomoric" emotion in a sports ball game. W are Ivy league wannabes and the Ivy's don't care that much about competitive athletics nor can we.

Let me explain the difference. U neglect to mention Dayton was a 1 seed and a national title contender in Covid year. That’s a pretty damn big deal. Also just 1 down year his first season & UD looks to be in mix again this season. Mooney has down years 40% of his tenure. 40%! But lastly and more importantly if Grant ncaa rate doesn’t improve he’ll be canned. I mean he’s better than Moon has been already but u think he’ll get 24 years without stepping it up a bit more? No way. They’ll move on to next guy, crazy thought.

And Odom had 4 returning players last season. 4. Arguably better season than us. No a10 reg season title but still split w us, better metrics, went to A10 title game & won 2 NIT games. We flamed out and started our d1 winless streak of currently 6 since our victory lap net cutting. And now vcu a possible top 25 team. He had to “rebuild” but no excuses that it takes a long time and u need 3 years + to learn a system. Just gets it done. Part of the culture.

Who is your next target…Tony Bennett?

This guy is a comedian. Thinks it's some huge enlightened point that the VCU coach in year one with a complete and total rebuild had a comparable season to Moonie's NINETEENTH season. Then if you actually stop and think about it, would we have preferred to win the A10 regular season title or gone to the A10 tournament title game? Would we have preferred to get blown out in the first round of the NIT or win a couple games there. So who really had the better season, the first year guy or the 19th year guy? Madness. Sick of the damn excuses.

As good as Dayton has been, Grant has 1 regular season title, no tourney titles, and 1 NCAA bid ( 2 without covid) in 7 years. Odom didn't do any of these last year, Mooney did, but Odom still got all the praise and Mooney got criticized. It is what it is on here.

Get ready for 2 ton 3 years of mooniocrity. If the sun and moon (pun intended) align in year three or four we will be decent. Dji and Bigs aren't walking through that door. And moon is not setting any expectations.

Has anyone been able to observe Mooney's demeanor on the sideline? Last season when we had players he was back to early years Mooney, on the refs, on the players, locked in from minute 1. Guessing this year he will be back to defeated Mooney sideline demeanor.
