Opening Night Lineup - Just for fun

I've held off on being too critical, but I agree in thinking that we have about 2.5 guys who are currently A10 caliber on this roster. I think we might look back and view this as the least talented Richmond roster in the last decade. If this season continues as poorly as it has started off, I think we're going to be looking at a lot of roster turnover and the need to add another 4-5 guys from the portal. Not a spot you want to be in when the portal is going to be about 20% smaller than the last few years.

Giving my completely honest assessment from what I have seen the past 4 games, I think we only have 2 A10 caliber level players on this roster right now. Hunt, who is an A10 level starter, and Beagle who is an A10 level role player. It's a small sample size of 4 games, but that is how I see things are right now. So might as well try something different in terms of player rotations, different line-ups during the game, and see if that helps bring out player abilities more.
Dusan too.

Yep, Tanner is giving me some Noyes vibes too. You can't play 37 minutes in a game and score 2 points.
Yes, agree with both here. I was thinking the same - he is Noyes all over again. Not looking for his offense at all, except when he has to and it ends bad. If he is the shooter we heard about preseason, he needs to be shot ready. Classic guy that is just looking for the next pass as soon as the ball hits his hands.

I am in the camp that we should try something different in terms of line-ups. I get that our coaching staff sees these guys every day in practice, but there is a difference in how players perform in real game situations vs. practice. A player can make a bunch of 3's in practice all they want, but if they aren't producing even remotely close to that level during the game then it doesn't really matter what they did in practice, and we should give another person an opportunity to see what they can do.

I also think Tanner's defense has been fine ( he had 5 steals last game and has not been getting beat much), but his offense has been non existent. He has to impact the game more if he is gonna get the minutes he is getting. Against D1 teams, he is 2-13 ( 1-5 from 3). He played 37 minutes last game, scored 2 points and didn't even get to the line. And that is against Bucknell and not even one of the better A-10 teams. I would love for him to find something and turn things around, but it looks like we have another Noyes here.

I'm hopeful AP can be great but I can't move him into the starting lineup when he's shooting 18% from 3, 20% from 2, and 50% from the line! plus the dumb technical. let him have a great game off the bench first please. it'll happen.

I'm not as down on Tanner as some of you. he should be more aggressive shooting from outside. he needs to listen to the analytics and stop with the midrange pullups. but I disagree with the talk that his defense is so bad. he's defending. plus he and Roche are the only 2 guys hitting a respectable percentage from 3.

The official Richmond Women's Top 25 thread

The other piece that makes coaching changes much easier now with the portal is you can take your players with you. Look at the VA Tech coach who went to Kentucky, took 3 players with him to Kentucky, including the best player - Georgia Amoore.

So not only can coaches leave and not feel AS bad for leaving some kids behind, they can take them with them to their new school and get a little head start implementing their system. Roussell in theory could take Doogan and Ulstrom as two key pieces to get started (and others as well).

NCAAB Betting 24-25

3-0 Evening brings me to 6-4. Though would have been glad to take the L on the Aztecs game if they could have won, but with top scorer out and hobbled starter did not see them having the offense to hang with Gonzaga. It's funny, they have similar freshman class in a big guard/wing and a very athletic, yet developing skill big forward (also a little undersized). They have been getting good time, and are in a four game gauntlet that will get those freshman some great experience. Wish our freshman would be un shirted and get some run. Not sure how in this environment you red shirt.
Have to wonder if continue to stink, if the decision to redshirt isn't changed.

OOC Grade is in!!! No surprise, it's an F

I will say, I have always felt that one indicator of a great program/coach at the mid-major level is how often its coaches move up to the higher level. Its certainly not the only factor, but it is a sign of success in my opinion. For instance, VCU has had Shaka, Will Wade, and Mike Rhoades all come and go to higher level programs in the past 10-15 years. Typically the coaches that have stayed at one program have had tremendous national level success like Coach K, Roy Williams, Boheim, Mark Few. Mooney is certainly not in that category. But there is a category below that where guys like McKillop and Mark Schmidt from the A10 are in, where I think UR administration feels Mooney falls into. When we think of other coaches at UR like Roussell for women basketball, Chemotti for men's lacrosse, or even Allison Kwolek who left WLax to be coach at Clemson, their names will likely be at least mentioned as an option to fill coaching positions vacancies at bigger name programs every year.
Yeah, and not 1 higher level program has even inquired about Mooney for the good part of the last decade. Wonder why???

Mens 2024 - 2025 Polls/Rankings/Awards

I do think we are capable of shooting better than 26% from 3 but at some point we have to accept that maybe it won’t be that much better and that this is the norm this year. The way we shoot in practice/scrimmages is not the same as an actual game. As a team, we need to be more dynamic in our scoring than hinging on the 3 ball to win us games. It has not so far and against weaker competition too.
