2024 FCS Playoffs: First-Round Predictions

The chase for the 2024 FCS national championship begins this weekend in the first round of the 24-team bracket.

Lehigh at #9 Richmond

Richmond is rolling into the playoffs, winning 10 straight after an 0-2 start and a questionable FCS loss to Wofford. The Spiders had a strong argument for a first-round bye. Despite not owning any currently-ranked wins, Richmond gave Delaware its first loss of the season (28-9) in mid-October, and it beat playoff-hopeful William & Mary 27-0 last week.

Lehigh earned the Patriot League auto-bid, finishing 8-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play, winning five consecutive games entering postseason play. Mike DeNucci continues to be a standout on the defense and looks to be a three-time All-Conference player. He has 80 tackles, 10 TFLs, and 5.5 sacks this season. Offensively, Lehigh likes to get things rolling on the ground. The Mountain Hawks are enjoying the two-headed youngster monster of Luke Yoder (sophomore, 888 yards, 10 TDs) and Jaden Green (freshman, 693 yards, 9 TDs).

It’ll be tough sledding against this Richmond defense, though. The Spiders allow just 127.4 rushing yards per game, and they rank No. 21 in FCS rush defense on PFF. Jeremiah Grant is as good as it gets on the d-line in the FCS, totaling 45 tackles, 16.5 TFLs, 12.5 sacks, and six quarterback hurries.

On offense, the Spiders aren’t lighting up the scoreboard, scoring an OK 28.1 points per game. But the balance and talent are there. Zach Palmer-Smith has rushed for 1,275 yards and 13 touchdowns. Camden Coleman has 1,832 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Nick DeGennaro is one of the top FCS wide receivers beyond his number (40 catches, 576 yards, 4 TDs), but he has missed the last couple of games.

Richmond could be a dangerous squad in the bracket, and it starts with a convincing first-round win.

TY. makes sense. I screwed up the cycle. Tho in some way it feels like Moon wants to wipe this cycle & start anew with the redshirts & the local VA boys coming in next year. Because next year at year 4 doesn’t look good when it should be strong by year 4. Losing our best player & 2 best shooters off a current bad shooting team.

it's not a new cycle. It's year 3 of the current 4-5 year cycle following the cycle that ended with Grant, Sherod et al graduation (it started with them, and was extended 1 year bc of the covid extensions they got.). If we are resetting expectations just two years after resetting expectations, it means they think that maybe in year 6 we'll be competitive for NCAAs.

This cycle is:
Losing record (no postseason)
Winning record (NIT) - 1 year wonder of Jordan King.
Currently losing record (I'll be shocked if we end up in postseason in any way.)

Beagle solid box out. But the la tech player goes to the side of him. I don’t think he even touched Beagle maybe grazed him at most & there was then a clear jersey pull by Beagle. A no call in that situation is definitely best. But if any foul was going to be called it was on us it wasn’t over the back either.

The announcer before the 1st FT saying shooter “fending off the loud & rowdy Richmond fans”…what? Lmao.

I didn’t realize 2.4 secs left that’s too many to take a T down 1 with ball.

U can see how upset DLo was with coach after the T like how the heck did he just do that.

Announcer comparing Moon to Hurley the night b4. Good call mr. spider. Impeccable timing!

Mooney postgame heads toward the refs exit not our locker room. U can see rest of team going to opposite exit to locker room. A few players/staff sprinted after Moon. Wonder if there was a confrontation with refs postgame. Unknown but felt like it. I assume Moon didn’t assault anyone tho.

Maybe the hand cupping F bombs will now be on the way back. When I saw Moon lit into Darien Brothers during an A10 tourney in AC w massive hand cup bombing I knew were going to win.

Not preservation of contract he doesn’t need that here at UR not when we have our admin, and u fall into same category, that believe we had to reward Mooney performance with yet another extension when he already had 3 years left & was coming off a losing season followed by a NIT season where we crapped the bed with a 3 game losing streak.

But Moon comments preseason about guys will now be staying 4 & 5 years at 1 place - without evidence just his feeling - was a way to say we r restarting the build phase that he needs time for guys to get old & be in his system a long time. Think that is part of what 23 is getting at. New cycle for Moon that Brooklyn has mentioned too. Always new cycles that r not very prevalent in mindsets elsewhere. For a 20 year coach some of us thought we’d be past that. And not expect season 8 out of 20 being a down year. The 40% down to catch lightning in a bottle years out. And many think it’s great being a leafy campus and all.

I don't know. I think it is likely he did not think we are an NCAA team this year (which mid majors like VCU, St. Mary's, SDSU expect every year), or else it would be all hands on deck. Hell, Sec9 was so impressed in the NIL event he thought Jrob might challenge for a starter spot. He brings something to the team that the other guys do not, whereas guys like Tanner, Graham, Glou, Roche are all very one dimensional so far. Take SDSU for example, they have two true freshman - similar to our two - a bit raw and not expected to be polished - BUT they are able to defend and play physical - and they are getting time and also contributing in the areas of defense and rebounding. Mooney has proven time over time (THINK match up zone that started out good then got ABSOLUTELY smoke for 3-4 years before adapting) that he gets stuck on incorrect Mooney think basketball ideas. So yes, maybe not specifically trying to long game us, but he knows he's not going anywhere and he THINKS - incorrectly - that he has this new paradigm figured out - that is absolutely wrong.

We care a lot," said Walz. "We've got talented players. and I'm excited to see what the rest of these 30 or so games look like for us. He is spot on about the toughness and grittiness of this team. I also like when he says 30 or so games - because right now, the Spiders have 24 games left - which means Walz is counting on a run in the A10 tourney, and then the NCAA tourney to get to those 30 or so games - he is positive thinking and knows this team can do it. And not to mention - this will go down as a good loss on our resume - I would not be surprised if LA Tech loses less than 5 games this entire year. I also love Mooney going all out Dan Hurley at the end and getting a technical. Did it cost us the game - probably not, but it shows the fight and passion, and shows how deep the competitiveness goes with this team.

Still can't shoot. Giving leads away. Can't rebound at the end of the game. Blame the refs. What other excuses can we come up with for this game? This had the chance to be a sneaky win for us - because I bet from a numbers perspective, LA Tech ends up under 100 in the NET. Given our terrible Schedule - that is saying something. I hope the guys are enjoying some sunshine down in Florida. Thats about the only positive coming from this

Jasiah Williams is doing great at Stony Brook. All have played at UR. They have also all transferred from UR. Unfortunately, transfers are bound to happen in this NIL era, but I hope we do the best job we can in retaining our best talents.

This is the new era. You can take bigger chances and land kids that will star for a year or two than transfer. Our staff has done an excellent job embracing the change and finding the best possible talent available. Anyone coaching like it’s 1990s or 2010s is antiquated. Although the same concepts of doing right by players will never go out of style. HS coaches know where to funnel kids to programs that take care of players.

Fell behind early, but claw back to get a halftime lead, then lose it in the 2nd half, only to have the game come down to a last second foul call by the refs. This team never quits, never stops fighting, and never stops competing. DLO was amazing. He was doing everything. 26 points in 37 minutes on 10-16 shooting, what more can ask from the guy. I’m all for trying something different, but there are guys on our roster like GW3 and B. Artis who haven’t gotten meaningful minutes (B. Artis has had injuries). I think we should give them more of a chance or try different rotation line-ups first. Also, who would they take minutes from? Glou, Nescovic, Roche, and Tanner would be their competition at those positions. Not to mention Graham who has gotten a few minutes here and there. We know Mooney is only going to tighten the rotation more as the season goes on.
