Mens: 5-0 LA Tech in Gulf Coast Classic : 11/26 Tues 3pm - Flo again

Did Roche really only get 3 shots up the entire game?

The System strikes again.
He was only really open on one of them too. They had a guy up in his grill every time he got the ball. Lots of guys were jacking up contested 3’s early in the shot clock. Mooney was visibly frustrated and the bad shot selection prompted multiple subs down the stretch. Neskovic in particular was a real negative

You play in a D grade MTE, you get the refs who work 10 games a year.

Please note it was the responsibility of the host school, Florida Tech, to secure the refs.

I can tell u for a fact, because I was I involved in the periphery, that this was not going to be a problem with Florida Southwestern State College

We need a big man coach bad! Walz plays like he is so physically sore vs Beagle who is a spinning dervish with
little toughness. On the bad call at end the guy went over his back, but Beagle fell backwards grabbing the guys hip.
If Beagle had simply stood upright the call would have gone the other way. They had big guards and focused on attacking
Tyne. Dusan is only big man that really attacks the lane. AP is rebounding machine but on offense stays outside and never uses
his athleticism and height to attack lane. Roche appeared a one hit wonder. We had moments and did not give up, but we take way too many 3s and refuse to attack the lane consistently. Tyne had good moments, but he is still out of control much of the time.

Lose to Marist.

Moon t’d up at end of game and has to be restrained.

There really is a glitch in the Matrix. It’s like a sitcom clip show of lowlights from the Moon era.

I’m trying to think of others we can expect.

If someone gets this video they should win the Pulitzer. idk if u can get a Pulitzer for camera work. so maybe the Oscar for cinematography.

I can help you guys out.

LA Tech gets the ball with about 50 seconds left. We almost steal it so they call a TO with 27.4 left and 5 on the shot clock.

They miss a 3 but get the rebound. Difference between game and shot clock is less than 1 second.

Then they wind clock and end up missing an open jumper from the elbow with 2.4 left. Referee calls a foul (even on replay I’m not seeing anything) on the rebound and LA Tech gets 2 free throws.

They miss the first and make the second. Mooney is screaming for time out (you can hear it on the broadcast) and refs refuse to grant it. They finally begrudgingly give it to him. He says something typically heard from a VCU fan and gets T’d up.

Guy makes both free throws. Down 3 Hunt throws up a half court shot that barely makes it to the free throw line.
Maybe the most egregious part about this is we NEVER got the timeout. The refs called the technical and maybe they said they “granted” the timeout, but we were given no time to huddle or scheme anything (not that it would have mattered)

As someone who watched the game, it was not the right call. Beagle was boxing out with good position and fell over after LA Tech guy went over the back. He’s grabbing jersey because he’s falling over

Lot's to work on, but believe we did make progress today.
I agree if team was playing better with expected wins against Marist and Bucknell progress would be more the word after a close loss against a favored La tech team. Like to see team 4-1 before league play starts to feel team could be moving in right direction. I wouldn't bet on it, but let's first play it out. 👍

Sounds like a bullshit call, but still never should have been that close
Agreed. Blaming the game on one play, granted - a big play - is never the answer. Blame it on poor shooting - again. We shot 6-29 from 3. Blame it on our best shooter and scorer the past 2-3 games (Roche) only getting 3 shots. Blame it lack of rebounding down the stretch, etc. Yes - the call was bad. The technical didn't help at all. But should we have been in this position being up 8 at halftime?

This season has been rough, and there's lots to grouse about with respect to Mooney. But I don't mind the Technical. We need our guys to show maximum effort and heart. Having the Coach fired up is a good thing in the long run.

I love the fire but it was not the time for the tech, we still had a chance to steal that win, oh well!

Mooney needs to carry this over into practice - this fire. Rip the damn shirts off McGlothin and JRob, and let them "run with the 1's for the next several practices". Let's see if we can light some fire on the butt's of this corpse and breathe some life.

Two reviews - here we go.

Positive
This team is tough and might be the best team at competing on a nightly basis that Mooney has ever had. Fell behind early, but claw back to get a halftime lead, then lose it in the 2nd half, only to have the game come down to a last second foul call by the refs. This team never quits, never stops fighting, and never stops competing. DLO was amazing. He was doing everything. 26 points in 37 minutes on 10-16 shooting, what more can ask from the guy. Sure - shooting continues to be an issue - but I have to believe the coaches who see these guys everyday, this team can shoot and eventually - those shots will fall and we will be unstoppable. We got good production and toughness off the bench from Walz and Neskovic. I think the shots didn't fall for us and we just ran out of gas. But what I really like is the attitude of this team. Walz especially. His quote from the game this morning got me fired up for this team and season. He said the following on Richmondspiders.com "We're a tough team. We're a gritty team. We care a lot," said Walz. "We've got talented players. and I'm excited to see what the rest of these 30 or so games look like for us. He is spot on about the toughness and grittiness of this team. I also like when he says 30 or so games - because right now, the Spiders have 24 games left - which means Walz is counting on a run in the A10 tourney, and then the NCAA tourney to get to those 30 or so games - he is positive thinking and knows this team can do it. And not to mention - this will go down as a good loss on our resume - I would not be surprised if LA Tech loses less than 5 games this entire year. I also love Mooney going all out Dan Hurley at the end and getting a technical. Did it cost us the game - probably not, but it shows the fight and passion, and shows how deep the competitiveness goes with this team.

Negative
Still can't shoot. Giving leads away. Can't rebound at the end of the game. Blame the refs. What other excuses can we come up with for this game? This had the chance to be a sneaky win for us - because I bet from a numbers perspective, LA Tech ends up under 100 in the NET. Given our terrible Schedule - that is saying something. I hope the guys are enjoying some sunshine down in Florida. Thats about the only positive coming from this tourney.

are you conflating tough with trying….this isn’t the UFC. Basketball requires skills we seem to be lacking in that area, .

end of game mooney shenanigans around the 40 min mark. Happy Turkey Week

Thx for sharing. A few comments after watching the end…

Beagle solid box out. But the la tech player goes to the side of him. I don’t think he even touched Beagle maybe grazed him at most & there was then a clear jersey pull by Beagle. A no call in that situation is definitely best. But if any foul was going to be called it was on us it wasn’t over the back either.

The announcer before the 1st FT saying shooter “fending off the loud & rowdy Richmond fans”…what? Lmao.

I didn’t realize 2.4 secs left that’s too many to take a T down 1 with ball.

U can see how upset DLo was with coach after the T like how the heck did he just do that.

Announcer comparing Moon to Hurley the night b4. Good call mr. spider. Impeccable timing!

Mooney postgame heads toward the refs exit not our locker room. U can see rest of team going to opposite exit to locker room. A few players/staff sprinted after Moon. Wonder if there was a confrontation with refs postgame. Unknown but felt like it. I assume Moon didn’t assault anyone tho.

Maybe the hand cupping F bombs will now be on the way back. When I saw Moon lit into Darien Brothers during an A10 tourney in AC w massive hand cup bombing I knew were going to win.

End of game reminded me of Tarrant wisdom - ref should not determine outcome of game. No call appropriate. Other item with Mooney losing it: did his heart condition corrected by surgery make him more susceptible to future heart issues? Do not know the answer. If the answer is "yes" that kind of mental meltdown could be dangerous to his health.

Thanks for posting. For anyone wanting to see, forward to the 42:10 min of the video. Several observations/comments:

Looked like a clean block out from Beagle. His hand was holding the guy’s jersey but nothing egregious that warrants a foul. If anything could’ve been an over-the-back foul on LA Tech, but honestly a no call was likely the best.

Interestingly, the technical didn’t come right after the foul call. Looks to have been when Mooney wanted to call the timeout. He was very visibly upset. Curious what was said.

No way there was 400 people in the crowd. Looked around 50.

Is everyone excited to see the first NET next week like I am? /s
