Secret Scrimmage vs ECU 90-90

You heard the man: No more discussion about this team or season until or unless you have witnessed something with your OWN EYES. Mods, shut down all offending threads, please.
In other words, please stop talking about the MBB program on the MBB message board. And if you do discuss something I don't approve of, I will tell you so in the most assholey way possible.

2024 Presidential Election

Understand many detest everything Trump, wondering if you will still take the kids or grandkids to McDonalds?
I'm a Chick-fil-A person myself, but I've got nothing against McDonalds just because they let Trump have a photo op there. I'll gladly take my grandchildren there if that's where they want to go.

Detest everything Trump? I guess you are okay with his Arnold Palmer comments and his repeated statements that he will go after his political opponents.

still to low, to much mid-west, west coast bias as of late

what does ags say?
Just info to add to the rankings on AGS that 32 posted.
Spiders only moved up one spot with a strong win while at the same time only 3 teams ahead of them lost
#1 SDSU to #3 NDSU 13-9 I believe was the final score, they exchanged spots in the poll.
#5 Nova dropped to 15
#7 Mercer dropped to 12

One of the Hen's fans that is a regular there questioned Spiders only moving up 1 spot after defeating an
undefeated team that if able to be ranked would surely have been at least top 10.
Some of the voters post the polls there and at least three did vote Spider victory as the most significant win of the week, but the NDSU victory over #1 won out on that. The Nova loss however did take top billing as most significant loss of the week.

Excepting the CAA fans there, none of them for the most part have access to Flo Sports, so they have only records of CAA teams to go by, then looking at quality wins and bad losses I would guess.

Just my opinion, but Spiders need Towson and W&M to only loss one more game each this year and Spiders need to give them those loses.

JMO, but watch Monmouth, they have pretty much the top half of CAA standings left, and they have a high-powered offense (they average 40+ per game), but not much defense. They scored 35 versus Delaware but gave up 42.

that one Noyes dunk was pretty freakin' sick though.
the dunk was the previous year. Def. his UR career highlight, along with the rest of that game at SJU.

agree that first step and speed/quickness/athleticism accounts for the ability to be a good defender - quick-twitch reflexes, essentially.

Desire and commitment to defending is the other aspect, but toughness is barely three IMO. In HS maybe you could be a good defender by being tough, but if you can't stop first step blow-bys on the perimeter as a guard or wing, you'll get exposed in a flash at the college level. JayNel didn't seem to have that defensive first step, here or at VCU and there was nowhere for him to hide. He could have been the toughest guy on the court but he wasn't stopping King last year, ever.

We have a very good football program

You only need 7 for an auto-bid and no doubt all those schools would of jumped as they had 0 ties or say in CAA football matters when it came to voting/expansion IIRC. The only downside would be travel, but that's something that could be fixed easily. Id even say let Davidson/Dayton join with no scholarships and use those as easy games while we schedule big time games like ND St, and some other MVFC/Big Sky teams.

At the end of the day, the SOCON probably was the best fit if we REALLY wanted out, though I would argue it would of made just as much sense to stay in the CAA. Whether or not it was even brought up, the fact we opted for the Patriot, without overtures/assurances from Nova/WM that they would join (Which appears to not be the case), it will go down as one of the dumbest decisions UR has ever made with regards to athletics. Remember a president lost his job for even entertaining this idea less than 20 years ago. Now we have people in the same positions telling us this is a great move.
With only 8 teams in the PL that leaves either 4 or 5 OOC games each year. Plenty of games to schedule up. I don't see how that's radically different than what you propose. Since the Cooper days scholarships and redshirts have been added by the PL. I suspect this may not be the last move we see in the next few years. The CAA will likely break up in the future. The northern schools may exit and form their own conference. Maine to Buis Creek, NC makes little sense.

We have a very good football program

I wonder if restarting A10 football was a consideration, and if so what was/is the barrier from it happening again? We have us, URI, Fordham, Duquesne as members and Dayton and Davidson if we include pioneer league. We would need to get only a few more associate members like you mention. Even if it’s a downgrade in competition from CAA, I’m sure there would’ve been less frustration from fans because we would be going back to our home league.

This program is indeed strong. The staff has done an excellent job of recruiting local and nationwide talent but with a definite focus on the local high school talent that we are able to sign. We are a competing for conference championships again on a regular basis and and have been a playoff participant the last couple of years. Tickets and parking are a bargain. The talent level is great and we are winning. All we can do is keep supporting this team and try to bring friends and family out for a fun Saturday afternoon and hope they continue to come back. Times have changed since our City Stadium Days with television and streaming of games. We also have somewhat split up our fan base with the stadium structure with two sides and three parking lots but that was the sacrifice to move on campus. Hopefully we can win out and the WM game can pack the stadium. This team deserves it. What a great display of depth and talent to beat a team moving to FBS relatively easy with all of our injuries yesterday.
“hope they continue to come back” . Of course we want fans to become regular fans. That being said, hope is not a strategy. Lots of good things about our program but the weakness is the lack of fans who regularly attend. If we are to continue to be successful we need to be intentional about building an active fan base, students, alumni and community at large.

Charlotte Game (and travel) thread - Wed 11/13 7pm ESPN+

Hope to see you there Greg. My freshman year Spider roommate in '92-93 was also from Rock Hill as his mother was an administrator at Winthrop at the time.
Same here, I was one of the basketball managers from 76 - 78. I haven’t purchased my ticket yet but when I do, I will give you my seat number for sure!

Thank you sir or mam. I do appreciate the kudos. Guessing you noticed when, again with very little visual proof, past years during our very long NCAA drought - I pointed out huge gaping holes on the roster. And was proven correct by the pudding on the court. Will say this roster has much more potential than most of those, so I am optimistic. But will say very disconcerting that I have been worried about our defense on this board for a couple of weeks, and the first scrimmage I see VISUAL STATISTICAL PROOF, it shows our defense was a turnstile. So you keep being you and let's hope it can be corrected.
Thank you for your contributions ... the more discussion and interest in Spider basketball through the good and not so good is better

Congrats to Spider23 who somehow gleaned enough information out of a stat sheet of a game--- that he didn't watch, doesn't know anyone who did and that doesn't count---to come up with 11 posts in a little over 8 hours. critiquing our offense, defense, scouting ,etc.
