Will Wade and LSU

That's the damn truth, 23. I was friends with a recruiter for VT football who told me once that when he was recruiting Percy Harvin, he realized he was not going to get him once Florida bought a house for his mom and set her up with a job down there.
If all school recruiters know this goes on, why dont they find evidence and pass it on to the ncaa? It doesnt seem like its too hard to obtain.

And finally, you think this tape is the only evidence the FBI has. Please. They have corroborating witnesses and will lean on them to catch bigger fish, such as D-1 men's basketball coaches.
The witnesses have all been convicted and sentenced already.

Every time I read one of these stories this is my thought. So the federal government is monitoring the cell phones of suspected college basketball deal makers? Just casually dropped into the article like it's no big deal. I know laws need to be followed but I also feel like there's probably better use of FBI resources.
And really, are there even “laws” as in societal laws regarding recruiting? Seems like it should be 100% the responsibility of the organization running the league. What “law” is broken by offering a kid money to attend a college, other than NCAA rules?

LSU is suspending basketball coach Will Wade indefinitely in light of a Yahoo! Sports report that he is on an FBI wiretap discussing his efforts to lure a recruit to play at LSU.

A statement released Friday by the school was attributed to LSU president F. King Alexander and athletics director Joe Alleva.

It reads: "Recent media reports regarding Coach Will Wade are without question concerning to all of us. As such, we and university officials have taken deliberate and purposeful steps to fairly assess and adequately address this situation. As we have done since media reports first surfaced months ago, we are closely coordinating with the NCAA with every step. They have our full cooperation and we will continue to report to them all facts and information on this matter.

"All of us at LSU share the obligation to protect the integrity of this institution, as such we have suspended Head Coach Will Wade indefinitely until such time as we can ensure full compliance with the NCAA, as well as institutional policies and standards. Assistant coach Tony Benford will assume the duties of interim head coach."

Wade is declining comment on the Yahoo report detailing a phone conversation recorded by the FBI in which Wade discusses his efforts to lure a recruit to the Tigers.

The report says the FBI recording is of a conversation with Christian Dawkins, who is one of several people convicted in October of conspiracy to commit wire fraud for funneling illegal payments to families of recruits to Louisville, Kansas and North Carolina State.

In the report, Wade is described expressing his frustration with an unidentified third party handling the recruitment of a player referred to only as "Smart." LSU has a freshman guard named Javonte Smart who is a former Louisiana high school player of the year.

The report also states that it is not clear if the offer Wade discusses would violate NCAA rules, or if the player and his family knew of, or accepted, the offer.

The Tigers finish up their regular season at home against Vanderbilt on Saturday with a chance to win the SEC's regular-season title.

Wade, who attended a public event Thursday, says his players have been good at blocking out distractions and focusing on basketball, and that is how he expects them to move forward.

Wade was coach at VCU for two seasons, leaving in March 2017.

I don't know Wade so I shouldn't have called him a scumbag, but his actions were scumbagish for my liking. I mean if like Wade stated he got other players deals done easier, why not just move on to the next kid?

Glad he just got suspended, he deserves it for stupidity alone. He does appear to be a good coach so imagine he will get a head coaching job eventually. Kelvin Sampson probably can give him advice on how to spend his time away from the game. :D

I responded earlier explaining the laws they are being charged with breaking.

They’re being charged with fraud.

The way I’ve heard it explained is by taking this money, and assumedly not reporting it, they are then getting an atheltic scholarship. Players don’t receive scholarship money just from the athletic department. First the athletic department gets the players money based on need (just like any other student) and then covers the rest from their own scholarship fund.

By not reporting the money taken, the players (and their families) are illegally claiming less income, receiving more need based aid then they actually qualify for. Hence, the fraud (both against the federal government and the university).

Why the fbi got involved in the first place? I don’t know, and I agree there are more important things in the world.
you are probably right but thats just stupid really. They had to really go deep to find a law that was being broken because they wanted to stick their noses into basketball recruiting, which imo and probably many others, they gave no business being involved in. And if that is the “law” as u state it applys to the parents of the recruit, for not claiming the money, not the agent offering them the money. Really shows how the usa is so consumed with “getting people” and bringing people down. Far too much law enforcement on many levels.
I will admit that Will Wade is an obvious cheater though.

angola, the infamous louisiana state pen has roped soap but if he goes to a fed house, probably not. he will have is adidas shower shoes though, most prisoners have shower shoe contracts.

I'm sure Will Wade wasn't doing this at VCU. ;) I mean, I'm sure those top ranked recruits were choosing VCU over larger BCS schools because they wanted to play in 7000 seat all aluminum high school gym. Please. It wasn't like some secret that he wasn't doing this all along. Now, there is proof though.
A 7500 seat building that always is full. Why would a recruit want that?

It’s always sold out, not always full. They have to keep the streak of a school with 30000 students selling out a 7000 seat gym. I have always found it funny how RPI is so proud of that.

Just as proud as you are with 3,500 getting announced as 6,000.

Norwood was a great guy, until he wasn’t
Will Wade was a great guy and coach, until he wasn’t
It’s amazing that they fit right in while at VCU
I am sure all is well now, VCU “compliance” has told us so

VCU selling out 7500 seats is the equivalent of us selling out 750 seats. Let's reduce capacity to 750 at the Robins Center and see how many consecutive sellouts we can have.

You already did that by over a thousand seats. I don't think VCU fans have to defend themselves or their fan base as to supporting the team and creating a great atmosphere.

And yes, if you are waiting for something damaging to the VCU program about Wade, don't hold your breath. They did an internal investigation and went beyond that with what they shared with the NCAA.

Slimeball or Scumbag were questioned as terms related to Wade, many VCU fans would defend either as accurate. The guy didn't even tell his players face to face that he was leaving. He is very good at X's and O's but it takes a lot more than that to build and sustain a winning program, especially if you are playing by the rules . ( you guys know that well)

UNC seats 21k at the Dean Dome but has about 19k students. I'll be impressed once VCU expands to 32k seats and sells out regularly.

Am I? Why don't you at least expand to 10,000 – still less than a third of your student population – and see what happens.

One of the best basketball development centers in the nation, strong likelihood of playing mutliple times in the NCAA tourney, a sports program where basketball is the main focus...the list goes on.

There just aren't enough people in RVA to pull off 21k every night, but there are enough to pull off 10k every night. That said, we are not at the Gonzaga level, but there's every indication that it is possible.

Whether we would sell out at 10,000 is debatable. If the program continues on an upward trajectory maybe we could. However, if I am following you correctly I would agree with your premise. Richmond should never sell as many seats as VCU. We have some built in advantages-30,000 plus student population to draw from, a large number of students from the area who stay in the area, and greater appeal with the public at large-some of it based on being a public university which more people can identify with. Same things apply to pep band that we have built in advantages and if your pep band suddenly became better than ours then we should really question what we are doing. Personally, I would like to see both programs doing well enough to sell out on a regular basis. As long as you are not playing us I want Richmond to do well. Good for the city, good for the A-10.
