If all school recruiters know this goes on, why dont they find evidence and pass it on to the ncaa? It doesnt seem like its too hard to obtain. That's the damn truth, 23. I was friends with a recruiter for VT football who told me once that when he was recruiting Percy Harvin, he realized he was not going to get him once Florida bought a house for his mom and set her up with a job down there.
The witnesses have all been convicted and sentenced already. And finally, you think this tape is the only evidence the FBI has. Please. They have corroborating witnesses and will lean on them to catch bigger fish, such as D-1 men's basketball coaches.
And really, are there even “laws” as in societal laws regarding recruiting? Seems like it should be 100% the responsibility of the organization running the league. What “law” is broken by offering a kid money to attend a college, other than NCAA rules?Every time I read one of these stories this is my thought. So the federal government is monitoring the cell phones of suspected college basketball deal makers? Just casually dropped into the article like it's no big deal. I know laws need to be followed but I also feel like there's probably better use of FBI resources.
That was evidence to wiretap dawkinswhy would they release all of the information they have if they don't have to? They had to have enough to convince the Judge to let them do a wiretap.
Well, ole slick Willie, just got suspended indefinitely by LSU.The witnesses have all been convicted and sentenced already.
I responded earlier explaining the laws they are being charged with breaking. And really, are there even “laws” as in societal laws regarding recruiting? Of course? Scumbag? That’s pretty harsh language for giving money to recruits.Of course it does.
How about cheater?Of course? Scumbag? That’s pretty harsh language for giving money to recruits.
I guess I define scumbag less broadly.
you are probably right but thats just stupid really. They had to really go deep to find a law that was being broken because they wanted to stick their noses into basketball recruiting, which imo and probably many others, they gave no business being involved in. And if that is the “law” as u state it applys to the parents of the recruit, for not claiming the money, not the agent offering them the money. Really shows how the usa is so consumed with “getting people” and bringing people down. Far too much law enforcement on many levels. They’re being charged with fraud.
The way I’ve heard it explained is by taking this money, and assumedly not reporting it, they are then getting an atheltic scholarship. Players don’t receive scholarship money just from the athletic department. First the athletic department gets the players money based on need (just like any other student) and then covers the rest from their own scholarship fund.
By not reporting the money taken, the players (and their families) are illegally claiming less income, receiving more need based aid then they actually qualify for. Hence, the fraud (both against the federal government and the university).
Why the fbi got involved in the first place? I don’t know, and I agree there are more important things in the world.

It wouldn't take much to have been the highlight of THIS basketball season. It would appear that these revelations about a VCU connection have been the highlight of our bb season!
A 7500 seat building that always is full. Why would a recruit want that?I'm sure Will Wade wasn't doing this at VCU. I mean, I'm sure those top ranked recruits were choosing VCU over larger BCS schools because they wanted to play in 7000 seat all aluminum high school gym. Please. It wasn't like some secret that he wasn't doing this all along. Now, there is proof though.
Why would you want to see VCU taken down? Can't wait for this response...Hopefully he takes VCU down with him. We should put a statue of him on campus if he does.
Yes, sold out. Few college buildings put butts in every seat every night. Sometimes season tix holders have other affairs to attend to.It’s always sold out, not always full.
You are gonna be even more disappointed. It would appear that these revelations about a VCU connection have been the highlight of our bb season!
With 134 straight selloutsA 7500 seat building that always is full. Why would a recruit want that?
Just as proud as you are with 3,500 getting announced as 6,000.It’s always sold out, not always full. They have to keep the streak of a school with 30000 students selling out a 7000 seat gym. I have always found it funny how RPI is so proud of that.
Yep!Norwood was a great guy, until he wasn’t
Will Wade was a great guy and coach, until he wasn’t
It’s amazing that they fit right in while at VCU
I am sure all is well now, VCU “compliance” has told us so
Well, if we retain Mooney, it might not be that many.VCU selling out 7500 seats is the equivalent of us selling out 750 seats. Let's reduce capacity to 750 at the Robins Center and see how many consecutive sellouts we can have.
You already did that by over a thousand seats. I don't think VCU fans have to defend themselves or their fan base as to supporting the team and creating a great atmosphere.VCU selling out 7500 seats is the equivalent of us selling out 750 seats. Let's reduce capacity to 750 at the Robins Center and see how many consecutive sellouts we can have.
OK, now you are just being silly.UNC seats 21k at the Dean Dome but has about 19k students. I'll be impressed once VCU expands to 32k seats and sells out regularly.
One of the best basketball development centers in the nation, strong likelihood of playing mutliple times in the NCAA tourney, a sports program where basketball is the main focus...the list goes on.A 7500 seat building that always is full. Why would a recruit want that?
There just aren't enough people in RVA to pull off 21k every night, but there are enough to pull off 10k every night. That said, we are not at the Gonzaga level, but there's every indication that it is possible.UNC seats 21k at the Dean Dome but has about 19k students. I'll be impressed once VCU expands to 32k seats and sells out regularly.
We all want this over to the East in the real RVA. It will happen and they'll all still be sold.Am I? Why don't you at least expand to 10,000 – still less than a third of your student population – and see what happens.
Whether we would sell out at 10,000 is debatable. If the program continues on an upward trajectory maybe we could. However, if I am following you correctly I would agree with your premise. Richmond should never sell as many seats as VCU. We have some built in advantages-30,000 plus student population to draw from, a large number of students from the area who stay in the area, and greater appeal with the public at large-some of it based on being a public university which more people can identify with. Same things apply to pep band that we have built in advantages and if your pep band suddenly became better than ours then we should really question what we are doing. Personally, I would like to see both programs doing well enough to sell out on a regular basis. As long as you are not playing us I want Richmond to do well. Good for the city, good for the A-10.Am I? Why don't you at least expand to 10,000 – still less than a third of your student population – and see what happens.
All I have ever seen are jugglers. Hmmm...Gold Rush dancers vs. jugglers- tough call. But does VCU have a halftime show equal to UR's? I think not.
