What I would like Keith Gill to do

What would you like our AD to do now that the season has concluded

  • Force a change from among the assistant coaches, we need a different perspective on staff

9, while the HC is always involved, you can't expect the HC to do all the recruiting. no HC does. they can't be everywhere and do everything. it's what you have assistants for.
I don't know if CM is visibly taking a more active role or not. we're certainly hearing about his efforts more. doesn't mean he wasn't out there before.

"Chris is visibly taking a more active role in recruiting"
- Not sure what to make of this statement? I would think that "recruiting" is not something that would be delegated to an assistant that never played for a top 100 program or ever appeared in an NCAA tournament game. How does the "head coach" not consider recruiting to be his top priority? If this is true, it explains Luke P, Diekvoss, Smithen, Kovien(sp) and the talent that we have attracted. I have said in previous posts that our "sales team" was deficient and couldn't sell our product. If CM is not the sales manager and does not recognize what is key for the success of the program, we are in worse shape than I thought.

Recruiting is largely delegated to assistants at essentially all top level programs... How involved the head coach is varies by program and coach.

Mooney has essentially assembled a staff with 1 good recruiter in Lewis and 4 DOBO's. He needs to recruit.

Why you want your assistants to have experience outside of the experience they have with you. Lewis is the only one who has that on staff.

Will say that I have heard some good things about Jenkins as a recruiter, too. So maybe we have two who can recruit, at least.

I didn't say that there shouldn't be accountability, I said accounting. I meant that very literally, which is that there seems to be some expectation that X investment should yield Y return. This is what I think is kooky, it's not how sports, in particular college sports, works. This reduces it to some kind of decision tree and anticipated return without regard to the simple enjoyment of going to the games. And I'm not picking on you btw, this is a pervasive comment I read which I don't get. I'm a fan of the Spids good and bad and don't throttle my spend according to recency of success. I guess I'm old fashioned in that regard.

I don't think anyone views it that way, or I hope they don't. I don't think anyone expects that spending $4,000 on season tickets and Spider Club membership should guarantee a 20-win season. What we would like is the same type of communication that you receive from a company whose stock you own.

Maybe, but that's not what I read in the original post, nor in the dozens of others on this topic. I get the impression that folks think their "investment" has had no return and are considering no longer "investing".

I think you're miscontruing what some people are saying. Simply "investing" in the program doesn't guarantee any outcome, obviously. But at the same time if you are spending money and not enjoying the results, then it's logical to reduce or eliminate your "investment." That's perfectly reasonable and logical.

that's absolutely reasonable and logical. but the posts I've read lead me to think some feel donors deserve some kind of public apology and state of the union address from the AD.

Just curious and hope this doesn't hijack the thread but...
Has anyone ever seen or heard Mooney state what his goal is for any given year?

He outlined them on a radio show this year. Basically said something like, "We want to compete for the regular season and postseason A-10 titles and have a chance to play in the postseason."

Nope. I personally don't want either. I would just like to know what our athletic programs have set as goals. I see that as accountability. From there I can figure out if we had a good year. Pretty simple. I will always be a fan but then I would have a better picture of how to distribute my "donations".

Well I guess he achieved those goals. We did "want to compete"and we did "have a chance" to play in post season. Solid.

Ha, yes. This is classic Mooney speak. I realize it is just his way of speaking and of course he wants to win and that is the expectation, but still I think most coaches talk in terms of winning vs. competing. Largely semantic but sometimes words matters.

I think you're misquoting him. I've heard him many times over the years say that the #1 goal every year is to win the A10. the season, not the tournament. that's the only results oriented goal we need. if you accomplish that goal, the rest takes care of itself. but obviously you won't reach that goal often and we were far from it this season.

You know, I bought a movie ticket the other day...

I still haven't received a call from the CEO of Warner Bros..

Something must be wrong...

Yes, he has said that many times over the years. That's why I was surprised (a little) to hear him seemingly dumb-down the goals a little when asked on the show. My assumption at the time was that he was giving himself some room since he knew at that point that we were going to miss all three goals this year.

yeah, I think that's still the ultimate goal but you can still have a great season without achieving it. I think it's a great goal to give to fans that are demanding a defined goal, but a more realistic internal goal is top 5 in the A10 every year which puts you in the discussion every March.

So fine, some of you are saying that it's entertainment and I should just put up the money and shut up. Problem is that it's my school damn it and I am totally involved and I want more than "it's gonna be OK".
I just hope that the parents of players we are recruiting are happy with veiled expectations. If it was my kid I know I would want solid goals spelled out plus action points on how we expect to achieve those goals.

OK I'm done. Urmite can you recommend any good movies

I believe grey goals lead to grey results -- it's to easy to say we did well in a mediocre season. In HS my Coach taught us goal setting in this manner. At the beginning of the season each player met with Coach and set forth their individual and team goals. If he thought you were to easy or to high he would discuss them with you. He never made you change but you sure knew where you stood. He had us set our goals at three levels -- he called them top, middle and bottom. I called them "I won't beat myself up", low end and considered a disappointing season, anything less would be a failure. "Realistic", middle where I really/honestly felt I should finish by reaching high and pushing hard. And "pie in the sky", it would be time for celebration.

enigma definition, meaning, what is enigma: something that is mysterious and seems impossible to understand completely. Based on various items discussed in this thread as they pertain to the BB program and CM--recruiting-goals-accountability, etc, etc. I think it is safe to say that after 11 years CM is an enigma personified.

Calls for clarity and transperancy are good. But too many posts (not specifically yours) have sounded like the coaching staff are responsible to each fan personally.

I believe that isn't true unless your donation has a material impact on the program. But each fan should decide base on public information how best to spend their own money.
