What I Love about Chris Mooney

I am not sure but think there was around 16 seconds left when TA was was shooting FTs.
There are a couple valid scenarios that the staff needed to think about and review.

- after TA makes it, don't foul 3 point shooter
- if a miss and 3 pt lead do we foul to make them shoot 2 foul shots
- I don't think TA was iced with the TO as I think it could also relax him

In any regard I things worked out and it was the right call.

CM explained the timeout decision really nicely in the postgame and even reflected on how it was a difficult decision to make. Ultimately, the whole "icing" thing is a load of you know what for me. Either the player is going to make it or they are going to miss it. They practice FT's thousands of times in all sorts of different situations. A good player should be able to come back out in any situation and make those FT's. Which is what Terry did.

And his rationale for taking the time out was to make sure we knew exactly what to do should he miss, which CM explained was going to be to foul ASU as soon as they crossed half court and not allow them to get a good look at a 3.

In this situation, absolutely the right call.

I've never understood why this part is treated like rocket science. No need to call a timeout if you just work on the strategy and execution in practice and call "foul with three point lead" "END GAME 1" or "don't foul with three point lead" "END GAME 2" and just call it like you would call any other defense from the bench.

This is not specific to Mooney, but rather pretty much every game where coaches feel the need to call time out to set this strategy up.

On the other hand, if you get 100 billion time outs per half, you might as well use one.

I can see both sides. We have all seen kids making stupid plays at the end of a game to lose or almost lose. Calling timeouts they don't have or fouling a guy shooting a three. If you have the time out, you might as well get these 19 year olds on the same page.

Kneepad, I agree. We "should" know what to do with a 3 point lead and under 10 seconds, which is foul the guy as soon as he crosses the 3 point line. And by we, I mean every college team should know what they are supposed to do.

However, so much can happen so quickly in these end of game situations, that it is completely understandable why I coach would want to go over the options, positions, who is doing what, one last time. Guys are tired, guys have foul trouble, get caught up in the moment. These close game must shave days and weeks off a coach's life every time they come up.
